Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
thrall7 Over the years, this show - and "The Closer" - formed a terrific block of crime drama. Probably my favorite since "Homicide: Life on the Street" many years ago. The cast was terrific and the decision to go in a different direction with Capt. Raydor's character, from the in "The Closer", worked very well. The casting director deserves high marks for getting wonderful actors for some of the surrounding characters: legal staff; families of victims and the villains. One of the consistencies with this show over the years was great writing, with some of the best villains I can remember on any crime show. No formulaic writing as on the very, very tired "Law &Order" series. Something that was always appreciated was an episode just about every season with a dose of humor in it. My sole criticism of the entire run was that there was absolutely no need for either the character Rusty or his story line. It added nothing to the run of the show and at times seemed very forced. (The actor wasn't the problem. The idea was.) I still don't know why the producers thought this character and story line were ever needed when the crime drama part was always so good. Definitely a series I will miss.
krstonoshic-94757 I love all CSI shows, Law & Order... in general these types of shows, but could not chew this one. I really tried several times, most of it was out of despair because nothing better was on, and it newer grew on me. I won't even dignify to comment on characters or plot. Its boring, way its produced is poor, all in all I don't know how it survived this many season. Stations sometimes have "maratons", like Bravo, and Im always disappointed when I see that they chose to show this show. Im sure they are following ratings and how many people actually is on the channel while airing it but most of the time i think that they just don't have to show anything better and then we also have to settle for this one. I really can't, I rather watch reruns of old episodes of CSI, Motive, L&O, even NCIS then this.
vedr-12548 I have watched portions of several episodes and I find that the overacting is outrageous, so much so as to be called amaturish. The actors may be very professional, so I must apply the blame to the directors. Professional though they may be, their lines are read like my school mates in my rural country school Christmas Concert. The emphasis, tones, and volumes are mostly chaotic and ill timed, and that has to lie with the director.
barcodez-1 Between these long story arcs to the contrived personal lives of the major characters, this show has gone downhill. I used to love it (and the Closer) when it was a very well-acted, well-written police drama. Probably one of the best since NYPD Blue. I enjoyed that the character backgrounds and personal quirks were merely backdrop to the weekly crime-to-solve.The last couple seasons they pushed the characters' lives to the forefront. Starting with the sometimes-likable Rusty, add in another foster kid, several romantic relationships. And now an illness in a major character. The cop drama seems to get pushed to the side for the soap opera that lasts all season, if not longer. And both the characters stories and the crime ones are forcing their relevance SJW style. We couldn't just have a typical husband-kills-wife with a twist... oh no, Now we have to have gay marriage, illegals, a sanctuary city debate, racist rednecks, sexual harassment. This last episode - 6.7 - tries too damn hard. I mean, sexual assault... no, wait: rape... no, wait: rape in the hotel room, with spiked drinks! How obvious can you get that they're trying too hard to stay relevant. Finally, we have these four-episode story arcs about a single crime. It throws off the pacing. There's too much to keep track of. The writers have to rehash details you learned in the first episode, less you forget by episode 4. Things that seemed really important sort of just disappear from the story by the last episode. One or two, yes. Four is too long.Like many shows, this series just tried to squeeze one too many seasons out of it. Season 5 should've ended with a wedding and everyone happily ever after. Now it's just going to leave a bad taste in the mouth.
