Glucedee It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
cupertino666-251-324092 This is an absurd film. There is much to unpack, but it's worth watching just for the character who wears a different utterly useless and out-of-place hat in every scene. 100% would recommend, but yeah it's mad haggard.
buckikris I remember seeing this film on T.V. back in the early 80's. I do not see what the big fuss is with this movie. It's far from Forrest Gump, but remember this was one of Tom Hanks first movie roles. Well this was the first movie I saw him in. The rest of the cast were new to me except Chris Mackenpiece(Meatballs), Murray Hamilton(Jaws), and Vera Miles(Psycho). To me I would give this movie a 6 1/2 star, but it is a good solid six. The reason for my rating because it sends out an important message to young people. I am familiar with the Dungeons and Dragons from the 80's. I wasn't a big player, but some of my friends were. I don't care who you are, if you start burning the lines between reality and fantasy, it's time to get out. In Mazes and Monsters, this is what happened to Robbie. He couldn't separate reality from fantasy; and the later took over. This not only happens with games, it can happen with movies, T.V., E.T.C.. I actually found it very interesting to say the least. I believe this was the first time a movie has discussed a mental illness. I think it was bold, sometimes we forget the struggles with a mental illness, as well as a medical illness. A good movie, with a powerful message.
Sean Lamberger A full-on smear campaign about the evils of Dungeons and Dragons, from the height of the parental outcry against the game. Funny and sad in the same context as Reefer Madness, it's akin to a long after-school special in the blunt, inelegant way it hammers away at its only point. An extremely young Tom Hanks, freshly released from his run on Bosom Buddies, cut his teeth on more serious material in this leading role. As the poor sap who nosedives into deep mental illness as a direct result of the game, his part is madly corny and he clearly had some growing pains to work through before becoming the dramatic juggernaut we'd all come to know a decade later. Badly produced, terribly acted, smug and boring and predictable to the final reveal, it's a living stereotype, the very essence of a bad made-for-TV movie.
har06003 Many things become clear when watching this film: 1) the acting is terrible. Tom Hanks and Wendy Crewson are so-so, but the parent-child conflict borders soap opera-ish. The other two boys: an overly pouty child prodigy and your stereotypical I'm-a-babe-but-I'm-really-sensitive-inside blonde dreamboat; 2) the film as a whole is depressing and disappointing; 3) Robbie's dreams and episodes are disturbing (acted by Tom Hanks); 4) the inclusion of the beginning love ballads is an odd choice ("we are all special friends"); 5) the weird lines and side plots are not made any better by the terrible acting; and 5) this is a really bad movie. Expect to be disappointed--and probably disturbed.
