SoTrumpBelieve Must See Movie...
Spoonatects Am i the only one who thinks........Average?
Matrixiole Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
vmmvieira I saw this movie in a festival 14 years ago. I was so disappointed and after all this time, I have not found a worst movie since... There are bad movies out there, that turn good again for their goofiness of silliness, but not this one. I love John Turturro, and he did not perform badly. He was simply mismanaged. The story is really poor, and the storytelling poorer. The suppose plot-twist we can see it coming after 30 minutes, and when it happens, it is the gunshot that wakes you up form the seat. Literally. The whole movie theater was sleeping, and that gunshot woke them up. The director had ideas and notions of grandeur that were lost in the most slow-paced movie I've seen, followed with uninteresting and disconnected cinematic tricks... Save yourself the from being woken up by an uncomfortable loud sound, and check something else.
Charles Jimenez I gained knowledge of Fear X from my interest in director Nicolas Winding Refn, after watching Drive, Only God Forgives, and The Neon Demon, I simply wanted to see more from Refn's filmography.Although Fear X is an interesting film, you wouldn't miss anything if you didn't watch this film. Some aspects are great, for instance the introduction intrigued you immediately from the great cinematography. However, the film falls flat on its creativity and where Fear X stands in the industry as well as Refn's filmography.In-comparison to Refn's other films, this is the simplest film I've seen from Refn, the film doesn't require an open-mind, just an interpret-able mind to fill in the blanks.I'd only recommend this film to fans of Refn as well as to people who feel as if they've seen everything.
punishmentpark I saw this before a long while ago, and mostly remembered the really good atmosphere (those small town views are priceless), which was still there this second time around. The story is really interesting for a long time, but when a lot is revealed in the scene with the characters Adamson (he is some sort of police chief or judge) and Peter (and one other guy - also police), it all becomes quite inane and uninteresting. In my mind, things stayed much more unclear and dark when I first viewed it. Too bad.The atmosphere still stands though, and the two stories of two men (families) in different, distant states is still interesting up to a point. The little mysterious and arty bits that director Nicolas Winding Refn put in here and there (a red lit hand, a face pressing through some piece of clothing and some special effects kind of thing) really added little or nothing to the whole. The acting is pretty much perfect, though.Another film that has quite a few qualities, but is ultimately rather inane. In such cases, I am mostly lenient; 5 out of 10.
alexx668 Fear X is a psychological-thriller that focuses mostly on atmosphere. Harry, a security guard, tries to discover the true circumstances surrounding the murder of his wife. He also sees visions, that act as psychic pointers of sorts.Very well directed, Fear X has some of the eerie ambiance of the films of Atom Egoyan, a bit of the distorted wonderland feel of the films of David Lynch, and some of the enigma of Antonioni's Blow Up. What is lacking is the meaning cultivated in the works of the afore-mentioned directors. There simply isn't much meaning apart from the rather simplistic notion that Harry should get on with his life. This doesn't mean that there aren't interesting themes floating around the film. They just aren't explored thoroughly. One theme is the constant monitoring, which is then magnified and abstracted to a point of paranoia. As a security guard, Harry monitors the shopping mall he works in. His co-worker friend also monitors the place via multiple cameras, from which then he gets the tapes and hands them to Harry. At home, Harry obsessively watches the tapes assembling an abstract mosaic of suspects and motives.Another theme is the mystique lying beneath what seems an ordinary everyday-life existence: the investigation by the police seemingly carrying some secret meaning, the prostitution ring in the hotel, Lieutenant Peter Northrup operating in a secret society of sorts etc. Sadly, the metaphysical aspects in the ending are obscure and unclear, but Harry seems to be moving on with his life (if he's not dead, which again is not clear). In general, the atmosphere makes up for the anemic meaning.
