Odelecol Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
Nayan Gough A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
rjg-31356 The story starts out with enticing visuals-the teeth of the 1st victim ensconced in a silver serving butler tray precariously situated in the middle of an ice covered lake. Quaid is usually good & does his best playing a forensic odontologist. Stormare is best known as playing maniacs. Sure enough, he plays a pervert but he's barely in this. The story would've been better served if he'd been explored as a villain, but they unload on the hard working widower who lays his life on the line every day protecting his community & is only trying to support his family after the tragic death of his young wife from cancer! The quality disintegrates when the first 'Horseman' is revealed. Chilling scenes reminiscent of "Silence of the Lambs' were destroyed by the actress over-acting in a hyper sexualized way. When her back story is filled in it makes sense but the actress lays it on too thick. It's unfortunate that they chose an Asian actress to play the part, further feeding into the narrative warning parents to NOT adopt an 'other.' The movie became so predictable that I knew who was going to be the last victim. By the time Quaid discovers the 'white room' with the creepy organ music playing in the soundtrack, I was so disgusted I was fast forwarding. The story is wrong on so many levels & feeds into the current popular narrative of victim-hood that is sweeping the US. Research shows that children who are abused or forced to take on the role of caretaker tend to develop a host of serious health problems, but it does NOT indicate that they collectively become a movement of dangerous psychopaths & serial killers. The movie ends abruptly without the main perpetrator suffering any repercussions & it's pronounced that he 'will be OK." When the identity of the Horsemen is revealed, I guarantee you'll feel cheated! If you've been abused, adopted, or are an imperfect parent, this movie will make you feel angry, afraid & depressed. The producers of this abomination should be ashamed.
jerrywright15 I actually found the Horsemen as a recommendation from watching "The Caller". It basically followed a distant father/ detective who heads up a serial investigation into murders that revolve around the four horsemen.Okay so I'll be honest I wanted to see this movie for two reasons, one it had a serial killer and two I like Dennis Quaid's work. That being said I'm not sure what Dennis read that made him want to do this particular film. Sure if you read the synopsis it seems like a great concept that could have some neat things done but I'm sure once he he read the script he had to realize this is well crap. They build this whole serial killing thing up to a point where your expecting something elaborate or grand that has meaning behind it. I'll put you out of your misery and tell you there is none. I'm not even sure why they chose the four horsemen as representation because there was really no connection. The acting was par nothing spectacular and the kills were pretty disturbing at first, but lose momentum quickly. There was also a twist they tried to throw in there that failed miserably. I maybe got a good 30 minutes into the movie and realized quickly where they were going with it and who they were going to say was the "white horsemen." The ending was...lacking I didn't feel connected to the characters or emotional for what was happening. Don't get me wrong I feel sorry about the situation but the emotional connection just wasn't there for me. Though of no fault of Dennis and Pucci who do their best. It also ended with something of question mark, I wasn't exactly sure of what happened to the guilty party. The only Ace in this movie to me was Ziyi Zhang who was pretty exceptional in her role as a troubled "youth", at least i THINK she was a youth. All in all if you feel like sitting back on a couch with your lover and just watching random movies for no reason other then something to do then go for it. 4/10.
cabal_52 ****Tiny spoilers***** I am really fond of Christian myths. This movie gives me exactly what i want in terms of the re-characterization and adapting of such myths to modern life. It has a great perspective in that. Yet it lacks the creativity and the adequate amount of violence as well as the depth of the plot. I agree with the reviews that it is predictable though I think being predictable is not a downside for this movie as it shows that the character cant even see the obvious truth while we watchers can, which I think is a good description of the character. In conclusion this is not a bad movie at all if you. too. like myths and don't care about a great twist.
thomvic I don't know much about the Horsemen of the Apocalypse in terms of its bible elements. I hadn't seen Se7en which sounds similar in terms of plot. And I should probably check that one out because this movie was really uninvolving, moved too fast and performances are uninspiring and boring.Dennis Quaid plays a frustrated single father of two kids, who is out to investigate a series of killings which resemble a link to the four horsemen from the apocalypse. That's pretty much all you need to know because everything else seems to go by in a blur.Ziyi Zhang, who I am a fan of, was unconvincing in this role. There is just something about her playing roles which requires a lot of English which doesn't click with her for some reason. I think she did an alright job in terms of her pronunciation - she has obviously made an effort to improve her English after seeing what Memoirs did for her. But I think it's going to take a bit more time until she fully can grasp it. But at least she is trying. Her attempt to play a psychopath was not convincing at all and she really wasted her time doing this movie. The murders in this film go from one to the next, with no real dramatic effect and simply to speed up the story. Characters aren't developed enough, and more should have been done on Quaid's wife subplot (though hardly) story involving his son.Lucky I got this movie for $1 at the Blockbuster Video Store liquidation sale. Hmmmm...maybe I should have suspected this wasn't going to be great if they wanted to get rid of it for $1. Oh well, next time I'll learn!
