Synopsis

Everyone else sees Wilfred as just a dog, but Ryan sees a crude and somewhat surly, yet irrepressibly brave and honest Australian bloke in a cheap dog suit. While leading him through a series of comedic and existential adventures, Wilfred the dog shows Ryan the man how to overcome his fears and joyfully embrace the unpredictability and insanity of the world around him.

Logan By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
happytraumer I'd seen little bits and pieces of this show on TV every now and then, never really paying too much attention to it. It seemed a bit weird, -which it is, of course- and I never really knew what to think of it. That is until I was watching TV one night and it was on, and for some reason I stuck with it. It turned out to be the last two episodes of the show. Something unexpected happened: I was deeply moved. I found myself thinking about it the whole next day. I realized I hadn't been giving the show nearly enough credit. I'd always thought it was just a deadpan comedy that was just there 'for the lolz'. But it's so much more. So after that, I immediately started downloading all seasons (because it's not on Netflix here in The Netherlands - sorry, I promise I will buy the DVD's) and started watching it from the beginning. It didn't bother me I already knew the ending, as the ending was the thing that had made me watch it in the first place. And then I watched it again.Naturally the ending didn't have the same effect as the first time, but it's message is something I deeply cherish. And I enjoyed the ride that is Wilfred all the more. Jason Gann is a gem. He's incredibly funny and has such charisma. I understand the Wilfred in the original Australian version was more evil in nature, but I'm glad that despite letting him keep his dickish traits and screwy ways, this version also managed to give the character something lovable. The relationship with Ryan becomes more compelling because of this: you're rooting for their friendship. Elijah Wood was the perfect person to play Ryan, and their chemistry is the solid foundation of the show. What I love about Wilfred is that it isn't just one thing. It's not JUST hilarious, deadpan, uplifting, suspenseful, touching and deep. It's all of those things. I recommend this show to anyone. Not only is it a blast, in the end it will take you by surprise and teach you a profound truth about happiness. (I also hope to see Jason Gann do great things in the future)
OldGeezer916 One of the best comedies in years. I wouldn't even call it a sitcom because that would put it in a category so many lame shows with an annoying laugh track after every third line. Every episode has at least 3 or 4 screamer funny moments. I loved the Australian version and I didn't think it this could ever measure up but I was pleasantly surprised. Had they replaced Jason Gann as Wilfred it would have never worked. There is such a chemistry with Elijah Wood as Wilfred dupes him over and over. Even when he catches him in his constant tricks and lies Wilfred just won't give it up and spins even bigger lies to cover it up. The humor is often outrageously wicked, vulgar and dark. Not recommended for younger audiences. I would say 16 years or older. I was sorry to see it end but it really went out on top.
deaddogstwo I have to admit first that I have never seen the original Australian series...but this is my new favorite show. The fact that Jason Gann reprises his role from the original automatically guarantees that it is a giant step up from most adapted-for-American-TV shows (the horrible US adaptation of The Office comes to mind immediately). This show works for me on so many levels, it's hard to pinpoint what exactly it is that keeps me so enthralled. Elijah Wood is fantastic. He imbues his character with a wide-eyed confusion and pathos (especially in later episodes) that actually reminds me a lot of myself, though I talk to a cat instead of a dog. All those reviewers out there who long for the over- emoting and silly accent of his Frodo performances are missing the point entirely. The development of his character has been incredible, and I sure hope that we get another season to truly dig into his troubled mind and mysterious past. Many of the other characters are equally compelling: Jason Gann actually brings a lot of complexity to his role (a tough row to hoe for a guy in a dog suit), Chris Klein is uniformly excellent in his aw-shucks portrayal of the ever sincere Drew, and Dorian Brown plays spot on as the sister who thinks she's better than Ryan, but in fact is just as much of a screwup, with at least as many emotional issues, as her brother. The smaller roles are also richly illustrated, and the casting is superb all around.I disagree with many people's view that the first season was superior; yes, it was raunchier and had more obvious jokes (including the absolutely hilarious Robin Williams cameo) but I find myself more attracted to the more complex emotional content of the recent episodes. I know others prefer the "Always Sunny in Philadelphia"-style of FX programming, where every character is an unlikable boor, but where that show jumped the shark relatively quickly, "Wilfred" just keeps drawing me further into its strange and confusing labyrinth of emotion. It's not often that a show can feature a scene where the main character is covered in dog semen and still hit me in the guts with genuine feeling. I relate to Ryan in more ways than I can count, and I truly hope this show sticks around despite declining ratings. Nuts to those who think otherwise. If you can't understand this show, then go lobotomize yourself with "Anger Management".
Sam M. As it started, i liked the idea and there were a few good and new jokes in it. After a few episodes i found it getting kinda weaker, because it seemed to me that they ran out of funny stuff fitting to the situation between the characters, dog and human. So the end of the first season i found it pretty average, but still, elijah and wilfred are great actors, so it's always a pleasure to watch them. I mean... even while the story and gags are at a low point, the series on it's own can never be below a rating of 7, in my opinion (because of these two). Now came season 2 it turned much more psychic, dramatic, and mysterious and that was the best they could do with it! So many cleverly made thoughts and situations in every episode. Always keeping an exciting balance between laughter, disturbance and relief. The story has so many twists and to me it seems like the writers have found the perfect recipe by now. At this point, just watched episode 13 of the second season, i am (again) flabbergasted and so i'll give wilfred a 10 stars rating. This series is now very near to a Breaking Bad level to me. There is always space for improvement but it can't get much better than this. Keep em coming like that and emmy's will probably follow you ;)
