Synopsis

Once upon the 1970s, Dan Stark and his partner, Frank Savage, were big-shot Dallas detectives. So big, in fact, that they were lauded as American heroes after saving the Governor's son. Thirty years later, Dan Stark is a washed-up detective who spends most of his time drunk or re-hashing his glory days. Dan's new partner, Jack Bailey, is an ambitious, by-the-book and overall good detective, but is sometimes a bit too snarky for his own good. His habit of undermining himself has earned him a dead-end position in the department, and he is stuck solving annoying petty theft cases that nobody else wants. Worse, he's been given the thankless task of babysitting Dan, the drunk pariah who can never keep partners for long.

Claysaba Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Ezmae Chang This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Raymond Sierra The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
larry.launders I was surprised, pleasantly!I did not get to see this show when it was actually aired. And fair disclosure - I grew up not far from Dallas, where this show is set. So I WANTED it to be good. That and I knew a handful of people who worked on this show, I wanted it to be good for them as well. I finally watched it when it hit Netflix a few weeks ago. I was very surprised at how much I laughed and enjoyed it. That being said, I put most of that down to how Hanks and Whitford worked so well together. The show IS a cliché - in fact it covers a lot of cliché's. Buddy cops, rookie & the old hand, Odd Couple, the screw-ups and their boss(es), take your pick because most of them are represented here. Still, it was just a ton of fun! So after watching it a bit, I looked it up on here to find most every episode had ratings of at least 7 and climbing towards 8. That's not bad! I also really liked how it was edited - by that I mean it will jump around in a time a little bit, and let you know when it does, but it worked well telling their stories. For whatever they had to work with, they made great use of their resources! Hanks plays the newer guy, over-achiever with high aspirations who finds himself saddled with a complete throwback in Whitford, generally everything Hanks isn't. So while Hank's character is the bird wanting to soar, Whitfords' is the anchor chain tied to his foot. Whitford's Dan Stark is all about making the arrest and stopping bad things from happening, almost no matter what. Hank's Bailey is the procedure guy, likely no less motivated similarly to Stark but it doesn't quite come across the same. So you wind up with Bailey having to bend more than Stark when it comes to procedure. And it's fun! Having grown up in the area of course I recognized plenty of places throughout the series - easy to tell some scenes were shot outside of Dallas but still nearby (recognized Fort Worth and Arlington locations). In fact there's one scene that likely got the show in big trouble with the network - as the show is set in Dallas, in one scene (I forget which episode) an extra walks across the screen with his back to the camera where you can clearly see FORT WORTH POLICE DEPT across the back of his shirt...and the scene was supposed to be in the Dallas PD office at Bailey and Starks' desks are. Yes, I suppose a movie could be made from this (trivia says this started off as a movie script) but I'd rather see more episodes. So, watch this show! You'll laugh!
Mr-Fusion Up until BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, THE GOOD GUYS filled a gaping hole in a TV landscape chock-full of by-the-numbers police procedurals. You know the kind: lots of standing around and talking, plots that are made in the crime lab. It gets old quick, and this was (largely) the antithesis, embodied by '70s throwback Dan Stark; an old-fashioned reckless cop who's constantly calling for crimes to be solved where they should be: on the streets, guns blazing, in a fast car. I love this character and what he and the show stood for. It's fantasy, flies completely in the face of realism (which we have plenty of, at the moment), and its breezy sense of humor and action is perfect for Summer. It's just a breath of fresh air, all around. There's nothing else like it, even four years after the fact. For one thing, one of the stars of the show is a '79 Trans Am. That alone tells you what kind of show this is, and it informed a great deal of the series' action scenes. That's just a righteous car, no two ways about it. And not only that, they set the show in Dallas. Not New York or L.A. or Miami or Chicago. Dallas! And they made the city look really cool doing it. All the pieces here just seemed to uncannily fit.THE GOOD GUYS never took itself too seriously. It always started with our heroes on a dead-end property crime, some galactic coincidence would occur, and the case would blow wide open - usually with the resulting bullets flying. It was a winning formula, one that sought to put some fun back into the cop show. There are only 20 episodes, but it's still one hell of a fun season. 10/10
SnoopyStyle Jack Bailey (Colin Hanks) is a by-the-book neat police detective who is stuck at the bottom of the squad. He gets put together with Dan Stark (Bradley Whitford), a drunken, lecherous mess who nobody wants to partner up with. Dan is a 70s throwback and the stache to prove it. Yes, they are the Odd Couple of police.Bradley Whitford really goes all out with this character. He is absolutely wonderful. And Colin Hanks fits this stiff character perfectly. Diana Maria Riva is good as their frustrated Lieutenant boss. Jenny Wade is lovely as the flustered ADA, and possible love interest. This is a good fun show that only lasted one season.
amusmeci Between snot and tears, you guys make me do this; by now all you know that the show was canceled, what a pain in the... you know. I don't recall a buddy cop show so good as this since the time of Sammo Hung's Martial Law. Everything is perfect here, the narrative, the locations and most important: THE CHARACTERS! Everyone is distinctly so cliché, but so good, so adorable, 5 secs and you love'em, even the "bad guys" are funny and enjoyable. In top of all that, since that episode with Danny Trejo, in everyone you can see a very recognizable movie face, getting along with general environment. Now we the fanatics only hope that after the DVDs sales they'll come back, as Family Guy did PD: Try to top this: I'll take a day off... when the bad guys do.
