Dirtylogy It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
Lollivan It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
lois-lane33 Normally I don't really go for cop shows much as they tend to be fairly dry Procedurals that I think have little resemblance to real life. Michael Imperioli is notable in this representation of cop life in Detroit-which is probably the toughest town to be a cop in, in the entire USA. Dry wit makes this show work-and other producers of cop shows could take valuable lesson from the way they did these scripts. The cinematography is well done and keeps the show moving at a brisk pace. The shots are crisp and I think representational of what you would see doing such a job in a city like Detroit. The characters are believable and it isn't a 'whites only club' like Blue Bloods-which is dry as a paperweight by comparison. Too bad it only ran for only one season. My favorite aspect of the show was seeing all the different places in Detroit. It's not a city I know much about-thanks to the shows producers for the education.
davidwave4 Detroit 1-8-7 is the best show on TV. Although the Killing and Luther come close, Detroit 1-8-7 wins in terms of both grit and overall quality. Detroit 1-8-7, unlike Luther and The Killing, has a sense of home, a sense of self whereas the other two try to replicate Shelock Holmes and Columbo. Detroit 1-8-7 features complex 3d characters whereas the only 3D characters in The Killing and Luther are Sarah Linden and John Luther, respectively. I hope to god that this show is renewed because it is just so good. If it is canceled, ABC will be canceling the most brilliant show it's had in a long time. Detroit 1-8-7 is a call to arms for the city of Detroit to take back their city from crime and corruption. To fix up the bad neighborhoods and reinvest in the home of the Auto industry and the home of America's most soulful music. Without overdoing it in soap-boxy messages and political commentary like Harry's Law, Detroit 1-8-7 delivers its message while also providing for some excellent drama. It has grit and it has mystery. It has you on the edge of your seat until the case it over. Then, in a shocking twist, they come in with a twist at the end that will make you thirst for more.
probisone Without making any comparisons under the microscope and taking into consideration of location and storyline, I will use my favorite "law enforcement" shows: 24 and The Shield (which have seemed to have both ran their course) as well as Southland and Detroit 1-8-7 (both I with a LONG list of seasons, with Southland already seemingly going in that direction). Now there are 2 primary types of shows, the ones that are out on the beat hitting the turf and those whom tend to focus more on the inner-workings of law-enforcement. Southland tends to focus on the "street" element and beat cops, which in its own way makes for an extremely fantastic show. I believe that "street element" is what really gave the drive and made the show 24 spectacular series. The second type is focused on the detective facet and most of the drama is in-house. This is where The Shield and Detroit 1-8-7 make their mark. With The Shield only running 6-7 seasons, I believe that Detroit 1-8-7 has that special "OMG, I can't wait to see what append next episode", just as all the other 3 noted above had done. Now with the possibility of them NOT shooting a second season of Detroit 1-8-7 looming over our heads I fear that we are going to be the victims of yet another GREAT show getting the rug pulled underneath its feet, and there wont ever be a 2nd season. The thought of such a thing (like the single season of Day Break, sours my stomach. Detroit 1-8-7 had it all, great casting, great writing/plot, great acting, and the elements of action, suspense, drama, and the realism of being filmed in Detroit, makes this a dozen season show, easily. They say that it is the lowest rated "scripted" show on ABC, yet ABC has only ? drama/scripted shows? Its a network of "reality TV" crap (sorry to all of the "reality TV" fans, I get enough reality in real life)!Detroit 1-8-7 has received generally positive reviews. It has an average score of 63/100 on Metacritic based on 23 reviews from users. It has an arithmetic mean of 8.4/10 on IMDb and a median rating of 9/10. Robert Bianco of USA Today describes the series as the best police drama on ABC since NYPD Blue ended. Bianco says the show's best trait is its uncommon setting and that it is filmed where it is set, "which gives it an authenticity and a palpable sense of place." The New York Times's television critic Alessandra Stanley said the show is "a throwback to an earlier era of cop shows when steel-edged realism was still novel and there was a thrill to watching terse, streetwise detectives on shows like Dragnet and Kojak cajole witnesses and browbeat suspects. I will settle out of court for a contract of at least 5 more seasons or should the utmost unfortunate death occur of Michael Imperioli (Detective Louis Fitch) (and if they loose Natalie Martinez's character 'Detective Ariana Sanchez'. Robert W. Anderson Well, it is filmed it Detroit. At least so far. I wouldn't be surprised if that changed at some time in the future; and they went to filming somewhere else with canned Detroit footage. Detroit's one of those places it nice to be from. A long way from. Detroit is probably near the top 10 of the top fifty cities in the United States. As someone who moved away 15 years ago I know of what I speak. That being said, there are other problems; for instance a murder is not a 187 in Detroit. They probably got to far into the project before they figured that out. Someone was trying to build a show in the pattern of other shows where the city was the star like NYPD Blue and most especially Homicide: Life on the Streets and The Wire. Sadly they did a direct rip off a concept from Homicide. The great Yaphet Kotto played Lt. Al Giardello the interesting black cop who was cultured and spoke Italian. So apparently that seemed like a good idea because they have a black higher ranking detective who speaks Italian and is worldly. It's really sad to see such blatant stealing of a concept. I worked in an emergency room in Detroit for several years and there lots of stories there. The producers and writers of this show just didn't bother to go to the trouble to look for those stories. And lastly Detroit has lost most of what gave it personality. Detroit is mostly abandoned homes, offices, factories, even skyscrapers. It has to be challenge for the director to find shots of the city don't look like a war zone. Baltimore has serious problems, but nothing like Detroit. I remember about 15 or 20 years ago a common bumper sticker was "Will the last person to leave Detroit please turn out the lights" I even saw a review of this show that said this is realistic. It's far from realistic 80% of homicides in Detroit are drug related, 5% random violence, 15% family killings. And 90% are black on black crime; because the city is 90% black. And this show contains the usual assortment of skinny attractive people playing cops. Not that the murder cops in Detroit are ugly; but most don't look like this bunch. They would be better served by actually looking at Detroit's crime stats there are plenty of interesting stories there. I wasn't even a cop and I've seen several incidents that would make better stories then they've come up with so far. I imagine the mayor's office makes sure no one sees the real Detroit. Detroit was once the largest bedroom community in the world. Most of those neighborhoods are now filled with vacant and burned out husks of homes, with tens of thousands of vacant lots. To sum up. While this isn't a bad show; it doesn't hold a candle to NYPD Blue, Homicide, or The Wire. I hate to think that people will watch this show and think Detroit looks like a fun place to go to---it's not, there's very little night life that's safe to take part of.
