Synopsis

After the death of his younger brother, a troubled 19-year-old street dancer from Los Angeles is able to bypass juvenile hall by enrolling in the historically black, Truth University in Atlanta, Georgia. But his efforts to get an education and woo the girl he likes are sidelined when he is courted by the top two campus fraternities, both of which want and need his fierce street-style dance moves to win the highly coveted national step show competition.

UnowPriceless hyped garbage
XoWizIama Excellent adaptation.
Afouotos Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
huckaleg1 Some of these reviewers or just plain bitter. This is a great movie. The acting was lacking on some fronts, but the story and setting really shows off the Black community to folks who might never get to see it portrayed in such a good and honest light. And more than anything, the dancing is incredible. The director talks about putting together a film that in a way was groundbreaking. He hopes, and for me is realistic about putting out a film the shows off some amazing dancing scenes hoping that the world outside the black community will enjoy it too. As I have mentioned, some reviewers seemed to be a bit close minded. The cast is probably entirely black and the movie is set at a historically African American College. Anyone deterred by this is missing out. It is not a movie for "black" people having a wide and diverse range of characters. Any predictability can be chalked up to the directors goal of portraying the dancing to those who have not been exposed to it and highlighting the talent of these people. This is really a great film for anyone who has or hasn't had the chance to see dancing competitions such as this. In its own way, it is revolutionary.
jess34 this was an excellent movie. Brian white and columbus short were awesome. A lot of great music and moves. I love the movie. I would rate it an 11. all the actors were awesome. And brian and columbus are so HOT! I wish I could move the way everyone can in stomp the yard. I can move but not that good. The movie was excellent. It had awesome heart and soul. great story line with motivation. Never let anyone stop your dreams. I just loved this movie so much. It has lots of awesome characters. I own two DVDs of this movie. It would be nice to see columbus short in another movie. He did an excellent job. Meagan goode played an excellent role. Everyone did. I'm a very big fan of stomp the yard. Brian white was awesome as sly. WOW! I have two dvds of this movie.
gracegibson The only reason I saw this movie is because I was at a sleepover birthday party, everyone else wanted to watch it, and I was in the minority. I expected it to be bad, and it was. First of all, whoever wrote the script has absolutely no talent. It's almost as if the screenwriter took every cliché he or she could think of and put them into a movie: it has a young man from the inner city trying to prove himself to rich people, it has a pivotal murder of a close family member (in the inner city, of course), a Romeo-and-Juliet-type romance between the inner city guy and a (gasp!) rich girl...all of these have been in numerous movies, and I'm sick of seeing them again and again. Also, not surprisingly, I COULD SEE ALMOST EVERY MOMENT OF THE MOVIE COMING. I think it's safe to say that there are few movies out there more predictable than this one. The dialogue was also yet another clichéd aspect of the movie. I mean, seriously, how many times have we heard words to the effect of "We're a team!" "I have to live my own life, Daddy!"? Lots, I'm sure. And lastly, the movie resorts to cheap tricks, like putting the main character's love interest in lots of unnecessarily revealing clothing, hoping to distract you from the fact that everything else is fairly uninteresting. What stops me from giving this movie a 1 is the cinematography and the dancing, the only likable parts of the movie, as far as I'm concerned. But trust me, there are much, much better dance movies out there.
Byg Hoss This was by far one of the worst films I've ever seen. It didn't do anything to explain or detail the history of stepping on HBCU's nor did it give and accurate display of stepping. If you wanted to do another dance movie then by all means do one but don't take a tradition like stepping and try to make it commercial and sell it to the masses. You are just not displaying an accurate picture of what it's all about. If you want to see another dance movie like You Got Served then go watch this. If you want to learn about stepping and what it's all about go to your nearest HBCU and catch a step show. They have all the major fraternities on display.
