The party really gets started when Nikki herself arrives, hauling her latest lover and fiancee, the morally challenged lawyer who'd been handling her case. She's mysterious about her intentions and her current and former lovers soon realize they are all caught in one of her brilliant, mischievous mind-games with possible deadly consequences. Comwayon A Disappointing Continuation
RipDelight This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
owleyesresurrected This is a good, well-plotted, well-acted ensemble piece. It gives the impression of having a decent writer on board – which is not that common an impression, these days. I can easily imagine it adapted as a stage play and do remember checking to see if it had originated from the stage. I was struck again by how good an actor Michelle Trachtenberg is – for years I've been seeing her give little bits of evidence that, were she only given roles to get her teeth into, she could build a really high reputation. Having said that, I really should not pick out any one of the five main actors. Each created really believable, 'screen-filling' characters and there was really good balance between them. There are subtle undercurrents: for example, watch the sub-surface rivalry and point-scoring between Zac (Seth Green) and Marvin (Harold Perrineau) – just facial expressions and body language, but made me chuckle repeatedly.Nikki (Katee Sackhoff) assembles four other characters, who turn out to be present or past lovers, for a get-together in a bar. The plot is the working out of what this charismatic and magnetic, scheming, and possibly dangerously insane character is up to, and how it fits into their shared histories - and it is enthralling. I suppose it's best called a comedy, but I could also call it a mystery‑thriller. I found fascinating the gradual working out of the individual back stories and how they feed into the equally gradual build-up to what she's been planning. The only thing that could improve it would be a bit more in the way of snappy dialogue – some memorable one-liners, perhaps – if only for the title character. This film sort of sneaked up on me. I watched it and quite liked it, felt I'd like to watch it again, so I did, and gradually, over repeating watchings, it has become one of my couple of dozen all-time favourites. I never get tired of it. It's sad that it seems to be so little known.
suite92 Zachary arrives at a bar because Nikki asked to meet her there. Miranda joins him at 8:00 pm. They talk, mostly about Nikki. Marvin shows up at 8:30, looking for Zachary and Miranda. The stories about Nikki continue. All three of them had received one sort of wonderful thing or another from Nikki, and all of them had been lied to in different ways.Miranda says that Nikki called her from an insane asylum, where Nikki had been found innocent by reason of insanity of murdering a stalker. They wonder whether any of this was true. Miranda says yes, she had googled Nikki's case, and found plenty of authentic public records about her legal situation. They discuss Nikki's stalker, Mark, and his public records.Nikki shows up at 9:00, knowing that the three of them have been talking about her the whole time. She tells them Bert will show up next. Bert is her lawyer, lover, and fiancé. The discussions continue, especially about Nikki's arrest for murdering Mark. Mark was her lover after she left Marvin. They were heroin junkies together. Insanity entered in somewhere; she killed Marvin, and did not know it.Bert says that he stays with Nikki because he is certain she has been cured of her mental condition. She now sees that her previous homicidal thoughts toward Marvin and the others were parts of her insanity and have to be let go.The writing here is just brilliant. Nikki uses Marvin, Miranda, and Zachary to help pressure Bert in to accepting a wedding date roughly a year in the future. Also, she wanted Zachary to meet Miranda. This is only the beginning of the film. These smart people who know Nikki have a lot more to do before this encounter is over. Nikki is mightily challenged by Bert, a man who is a 'better liar than I am.' Bert on the other hand, things of Nikki as 'walking Viagra.'The peeling away of layers of story together with re-interpretations of previous statements continues. How does this end? ------Scores-------Cinematography: 10/10 Some of the best low-light photography I've ever seen. Very atmospheric.Sound: 10/10 No problems.Acting: 10/10 Best performance I've ever seen from Michelle Trachtenberg and from Seth Green. Katee Sackhoff, Harold Perrineau, and William Baldwin were great.Screenplay: 10/10 One of the best, tightest scripts I've seen in a long time.
khono I actually think this was a great movie. The plot twists with the best of them, taking the emotional load with it.In the same vein as other movies of its kind such as My Dinner with Andre and Before Sunrise, Sexy Evil Genius was superbly brought to life through the power of the actors and the dialogue alone. It's pretty tough to keep things in a movie such as this both unpredictable and believable. We don't know what's going on inside the minds of anyone and neither do the characters in this story. Yet we have these customs, these social tools used to interact with people to get through day to day life predictably. We see this play out as strangers meet and talk and get to know each other. These customs begin to break down and become useless as someone stops following the rules. The characters are left with rapidly changing speculation and mounting anxiety as the story plays out.I had just two problems with the film. One where a firearm's barrel was touched directly by the skin not even a minute after it was fired more than once. The other when a woman who was viciously assaulted by a large angry man was left without even a bruise. This is a definite must see for anyone who enjoys some good drama where the action is primarily expressed in words. One final note, I'm happy to see that homosexuality in film has reached the point where no matter whether people enjoyed the film or not, it's not thought abnormal enough to be worth commenting on. A normal, acceptable part of our culture :)
Justin McGill Just looking at the writer and director behind the camera both alumni of the USA series "The Dead Zone" (of which Anthony Micheal Hall was the star). I will admit, off the top, I was quite dismayed with how small Hall's part was.. but that is only a MINOR quibble and in no way detracts from the film, he's just an actor whom I'd like to see more of.Writer Scott Lew may be known for the more off beat "Bickford Schmeckler's Cool Ideas".. I don't know what the reputation is among others, its one of those quirky little films you come to.. but considering they got a fantastic performance out of Matthew Lillard (which seems rare, until lately). I would give the movie and its casting good marks. We come to this film. And the one thing I can say is to me it was overshadowed by the darker more grindhouse driven (but similar old friends meeting in a bar) film "Sushi Girl", if you haven't seen that film I would HIGHLY recommend it.. but to the task at hand.Seth Green does NOT SUCK. Let's just get that out of the way.. He's quite good here, as is Michelle Trachtenberg and Harold Perrineau (from HBO's OZ). I wasn't bowled over by William Baldwin in the film, then we come to the icy "sexy evil genius" herself Katee Sackhoff best known for the "Battlestar Galactica" revamp. The basic story.. 3 former lovers of the title character all meet in a bar after a message to meet her. What are her intentions? That's the gist, and what really propels the movie forward. While the BIG twist at the end wasn't all that big a shock, its a film that's interesting to see how it got to that end as the characters bounce off crazy stories, each one seeming to relate an almost entirely different person to the others before a singular version begins to kind of form together.. before it gets pulled out from under us again. The flick isn't high on the stylish look, but it serves the film well enough and the easy dialogue keeps the film moving pretty quickly.I won't spoil the film, but I will say its definitely worth a watch.. but I would more recommend the similar (as I said) but harder edged "Sushi Girl".. or even the Ryan Reynolds thriller "Buried" films that take place in more or less a singular location through out the entire film. The film keeps your attention for the entire running time, and while not as polished or glossy as the average big budget film giving some bigger stars and a lil more tech this could easily be in the multiplexes. Don't let that stop you from enjoying the film.
