BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
Kidskycom It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Cheryl A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
Sherazade What is going on in India? Bollywood especially. Where is all this going? What's their angle? The script for this film was not entirely bad but the casting was horrendous. Saif Ali Khan as a playboy refusing to settle down sounds okay but not when paired with Deepika Padukone. It seemed so forced and annoying. Rishi Kapoor is of course wasted and looks wasted in his role as the typical uncle/daddyji. I don't see the point of the two foreign girls either. Their roles could have easily been played by Indian girls and with more finesse might I add. The Brazilian model who plays Harleen Kaur needs acting school. The French actress who played Jo (Saif's girlfriend) was a little better than Kaur but even she was pitiful and her presence absolutely uncalled for but bearable. Deepika's character made me want to vomit so I'm guessing she did a good job with her acting at least. The robbery scene was one of the most unrealistic scenes I have ever scene of any cinema thus, far. Ugh! This movie was quite awful.
DesiBaba Success of Jab We Met is what gave Imtiaz Ali the license to shoot this expensive romantic drama, with filming locations in UK and US. Unfortunately the story itself is cliché and predictable, there is nothing refreshing like JWM, which had amazing chemistry between the leads and top notch soundtrack. LAK falters at both of these aspects too. I think this was one of the best performance from Saif. The movie was very much along the lines of Bachna Ae Haseno with the lead who treats his relationship nonchalantly until the end when he realize they are each others true love/soul mates. Deepika is good, Rishi Kapoor is reliable as always with another stellar performance. The Brazilian model (Giselle) who played the young Harleen was a surprise, for someone who is from another country with no Indian background, she does amazing job portraying a demure Sikh woman from a very conservative family. I had no idea she was not Indian until after I looked up the credits on IMDb.6.0/10.0
Chrysanthepop I had heard so much of Imtiaz Ali and have yet to see his first two films: 'Socha Na Tha' and 'Jab We Met'. Then the opportunity to watch 'Love Aaj Kal' presented itself and I did not want to miss that. 'Love Aaj Kal' is all gloss and glitter and...that's it. Apart from the appealing scenic locations or the vivacious cinematography, there isn't much that I liked about it. It pretty much looks like a trashy Yashraj remake of a Hollywood rom-com. I don't know if 'Love Aaj Kal' is a direct unofficial remake but the story feels very familiar and bares strong resemblance to movies like 'A Lot Like Love' etc except that it is nowhere near as entertaining as those films. It lacks the charm and humour that would normally make this kind of movie appealing. While the events are downright predictable and obvious mistakes (like portraying what is obviously a squeaky clean English subway as a Delhi subway) can be forgiven, the pace is very slow while not much is happening. The songs are downright forgettable and what's worse is the way they were visualized and even worse than that is the choreography. Regarding the acting, Saif Ali Khan is irritating as the Punjabi lad and average as Jai. Deepika Padukone is average at best and overdoing at worst. Rishi Kapoor is a painful caricature. Newcomer Giselle Monteiro is wooden. Rahul Khanna is barely noticeable. 'Love Aaj Kal' is clearly overrated in my views and I want to believe that Imtiaz Ali is a good director and he can (and hopefully in the future does) do much better than this.
A R S With all the hullabaloo surrounding the Love Aaj Jal, the question is does it deserve it all not? In my personal opinion, the answer is no! After Kambakkht Ishq, this is the second film that has all packaging and no substance. It's hard to believe it's Imtiaz Ali who has given films like Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met agreed to direct a film of this sort. For a start, all the actors in the film get no scope to perform. Watching Saif Ali Khan in Love Aaj Kal gave me a déjà vu feeling. It seems like Salaam Namaste and Hum Tum all over again, expect that this is worse. Those films are actually good, but this is bad. As for Deepika, again, she was good in that crying scene towards the end. Otherwise, the role did not demand much from her as an actress. Giselle Monterio is wooden, despite given a role that only required her to smile and move her eye-lashes. She still manages to look cute, but her attempt to dance is horrendous. Rishi Kapoor is wasted. Rahul Khanna is neglected to the backseat.Overall, there is nothing new in Love Aaj Kal, expect for the 'Aaj' and 'Kal' part! Otherwise, I suggest you take a pledge to never watch this film!
