FirstWitch A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Akshay Ranganathan Years ago, we, as Indian Animators, used to either depend on other countries like Japan, America or other such superpowers to make an animated movie, to entertain the audience. And while we used to make tacky movies, which have no mechanical/dynamical/aesthetical values. No wonder they were just dismissed and discarded. But after years of experimenting by Indian Animators, we just can say this, "Though not at par with Hollywood, but still a commendable effort by us as Indians." KOCHADAIIYAAN is one such effort. I do not wish to spoil the story by writing it down, on this website, because it is not just a movie... It is an effort put up by Indians, with a Hollywood studio backing it up. It's one of those movies, for which you should not depend on the critic's reviews to analyse it... It is a movie, which should be seen either in the nearest theatre/on your TV screens, to cherish the efforts we have put up.Though, posting this review quite late, but it is worth it, as I saw it on my TV, because I couldn't get the chance to see it in the nearest theatre, due to other commitments. But go ahead, enjoy the effort made by us as Indians. JAI HIND!!!
Angeline Premraj I will not even address the graphics element of this movie, as the film's creators themselves insist that this was the effect they were going for. If this was the best they could do, that's fine, but now what I am left with is the naked body of the film that was hiding behind the drapes of the motion capture technology: the script. This is a revenge movie with nothing new to add as far as a plot, especially in the Tamil industry. Man's family is wronged in some way, man goes undercover, man reveals himself and gets revenge on the villains. Then we have all the unnecessary plot elements that added nothing to the hero's characterization. He dances like a badass? Cool. He rides on a dolphin's nose? Cool (and literally impossible). He does yoga? Cool. But what does all this say about a character that we should be rooting for? After this entire pomp sequence, we are still left with a character (the title character, ironically enough) that is not shelled out enough and too hollow for the audience to feel any attachment to him and root for him. Then we have the whole issue of who the bad guy really is. In Rana's words, "country is more important than friendship", and we see in this nationalistic period, people are willing to go to any limit for their country. So how is Raja Mahendra not justified in poisoning in their enemy's soldiers but Rana is when he basically smuggles their main labor force out of their country? That's messed up, man. Also, Veera Mahendra seemed to be a genuinely good friend until he was betrayed, so his actions seem justified as well. So who is the real hero in all of this? It was of course Kochadaiiyaan, who performed the ultimate sacrifice of dying for the right thing. But oh wait, he was also the most poorly developed character in the movie! And then we have Princess Vadhana, who was literally only a pretty face for the dance sequences/ the subject of my nightmares. Similar things can be said for all the other supporting characters (even the nightmare part), as they did not do what they were meant to do: SUPPORT. Rana's sister had her own plot that provided nothing to the plot. Nagesh, I am so sorry. These characters were only around, it seems, for the movie to meet its run time requirements as the main plot was so insubstantial. I can guarantee that this movie would have been a failure were it not for the name Rajini attached to it. I am thankful for this movie for one reason only. It gives us a chance to step back and realize what a detrimental effect nepotism and politics has on the Tamil film industry. There are really moving and novel scripts out there and directors with a different point of view that no one wants to pay attention to because they are overshadowed be films and people like this. Let the pomp and mindless, almost religious following of Kochadaiiyaan be an example of something we should not strive for, and let us go back to making cinema, not hype.
Achyuta Ghosh Rajnikanth is touted to be able to do it all- count to infinity, can find corners in circles, made the dinosaurs extinct, has played Russian roulette with a fully loaded gun and won etc. But one thing he clearly cannot do is to ensure that every film of his entertains. Kochadaiiyaan may boast of all that motion capture technology, but put side by side Hollywood exploits such as Tin Tin, it comes off as an amateurish, cartoonish effort. The story is a standard revenge drama- in the vein of Dharam Veer, and a million Chinese martial art epics. Kochadaiiyaan is a legendary warrior in the kingdom of Kottaipatinam. He is a man of ethics, but his enemies are not. His military prowess and burgeoning popularity attracts the jealousy of the king, Rishikogadan (Nasser). In a skirmish with the rival kingdom of Kalingpuri, Kochadaiiyaan loses his army as he chooses to ensure they live rather than be massacred. The king of Kottaipatinam uses this as a reason to eradicate someone from who he feels threatened. Kochadaiiyaan's son, Rana takes up his father's unfinished mission. He goes to Kalingpuri, trains there and becomes the army general. He then tricks the king of Kalingpuri- Mahendra Raj (Jackie Shroff), to let him make an army out of the people of Kottaipatnam who he had earlier enslaved, and then gets them home on the pretex of war. There is a double love story lined up post this featuring an "enhanced" Deepika, while Rishikogadan and Mahendra Raj must meet their bloody end.Rajnikanth is virtually in every frame of the film, and as usual he oozes style and confidence. While the movie is decently paced, every scene is either a song or a fight sequence. The result of the motion capture technology is abysmal. The reason for doing motion capture is to impart real feel to animated characters. In Kochadaiiyaan, the effect is opposite- there is no real emotion in the facial shots of the characters. Had it been a live action film, it might have looked good. But today's audience used to Avatar and its ilk, this mediocre effort simply does not cut the cake. Even Pogo features better animation! This expensive experiment to immortalize Rajnikanth might be good enough for die hard fans, but still cannot make up for its complete lack of connect, and its technical shortcomings. The last scene indicated a sequel- hope that is done better. 5/10
rahuljonathan-nair KOCHADAIIYAAN is saddled with the usual good versus bad saga (the son of an honest senapati seeks revenge for the wrongs done to his father). Having said that, I wish to add that the screenplay is truly absorbing for most parts, except when the songs show up. On the whole, the absorbing screenplay and the technology makes KOCHADAIIYAAN an interesting fare. For the legion of Rajinikanth fans, this film is definitely worth a watch. Kochadiiyaan succeeds not because of technology but because of the writing. The film is motion capture 3D computer-animated but the animation is primeval; both the motion capture and the texture of the visuals are closer to The Polar Express than Avatar or Tintin. Like any other Rajini movie, Kochadaiiyaan too worships its star. His character appears in almost every scene and there are fan-pleasing moments in the form of stylistic gestures and dialogues.
