Onlinewsma Absolutely Brilliant!
PiraBit if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
Deanna There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
Fleur Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
Bjorn (ODDBear) I thought I'd seen every relevant slasher worth a damn and I'd quite comfortably ruled out years '87 and upwards (mostly) as the genre had it's creative period between 1978-1984. Anyways; most likely I still have a few undiscovered gems to look forward to if "Intruder" is anything to go by. Plot wise it's as simple as it comes. An especially gruesome maniac is dispatching a few people at work after hours in a grocery store. Most seasoned genre fans will spot the twist a mile away but no matter; "Intruder" has everything a slasher fan could possibly want and the humor works especially well; really dark humor mind you! You have to get through a little rough spot in the very beginning as it starts out rather clumsily but it soon finds it's ground and climaxes with some incredibly gory (and quite inventive) murder sequences. Very methodical build-up (first half hour is ho-hum introductions and false scares, the second is gore galore and the third is a final girl showdown) but the flick's sense of humor and outright nastiness ensure it a special place in a slasher lover's heart. Casting in fun too with the Raimi brothers (Sam in particular) getting ample screen time and a Bruce Campbell cameo is always a good thing. Highly recommended.
tdrish For me, the mysterious part of it all is the title of the film. Why is it called Intruder? I've heard of intruders, they invade homes, they usually look for something. Intruders usually don't show up late at night in a supermarket ( that wouldn't make the market so super, now would it? ) Intruder, my arse, you have a mad slasher on your hands...while you still have your hands. And if your dipping into this, thinking that it's another one of those horror flicks where the gross stuff is done off camera, just because it's a low budget movie, you'd better think twice: Intruder delivers the goods in GRAPHIC VIOLENCE. This gory shocker just may put all the other wannabe slasher movies in its place. Our story opens up in local supermarket getting ready to close. The young female cashier is harassed by one of the final customers for the night, an old flame. A little dispute finds him exited out of the building, ah, they were closing anyways. Shortly afterward, a body count begins to rise within the store, a VERY HIGH body count. The deaths are downright grisly, brutal, and not for the faint of heart...okay? You've been warned. There were even a couple of scenes where I almost looked away, and I thought I'd seen them all, since I've seen so many in this genre. Hey! You have to hand it to the deli department, they have so many gadgets that can be used as weapons. Meat slicer, an army of knives and meat cleavers, oh man! Killer is going to be on cloud nine in this store. In my opinion, this is one of the best 80's slasher flicks, and I recommend it to all that are a fan of Sam Raimi, the great guy who brought you Evil Dead and Spiderman 2002. Oh, and don't forget to lock your doors...you can never be too safe these days.
utahman1971 Really, where is the gore everyone is talking about in the Unrated version. It was like rated R gore in it. Not one bit as close as Dead Alive gore comparison. Come on people. Gross out gore, where? It was nothing. I could of ate a feast of food while watching this and be fine. This was nothing to be sick about. It would jump back and forth from something happening to nothing in slow motion of nothing happening in every minute through out the film. I seen better horror movies than this in the 80's. The ending was terrible. I can see why there was no sequel. Acting was good, and gore was descent, but no gore fest. For the people that think this is gory, then watch Dead Alive. Big difference.Too bad some people lose their stomach over nothing.
Agnelin I have rated "Intruder" 7/10, halfway between the mark you'd give a movie that you like and is good, and one you'd give a movie that -like this one- is of very questionable technical quality or perhaps flat-out bad."Intruder" is a bad movie. Not terribly bad, but it has very poor acting (with the exception of Dan Hicks, perhaps, who single-handedly makes the movie worth watching even for those who don't especially like slasher flicks), a virtually non-existent plot, most of the characters are mere figurines to be disposed of...On the other hand, though, there are some serious people behind this project -Sam & Ted Raimi, Scott Spiegel of Evil Dead 2, Lawrence Bender (who would reach a solid status as Quentin Tarantino's producer)...- and the movie is absolutely fun to watch. For example, it is set in a real grocery market, and it shows, because it displays real grocery brands and products from 1989; also, both the products and all the store facilities are used in very, let's say, creative and hilarious ways. The story goes like this: several kids go to work to this market as the night shift crew, and they are informed that it is their last work day there, as the store owners are selling it over. Parallel to this, the blonde scream queen of the show, Jennifer (Elizabeth Cox) is being stalked by an ex-boyfriend. Soon after this, someone starts to kill the crew members...Like I said, while the plot is really thin and the relationships between the characters don't matter in the least, the movie is just a lot of fun to show, and you can tell that the film-makers had to make do with a very modest budget and what they had at hand. And they did a very fine job, producing some of the best-done kills that I have seen in 80s slasher movies. Also, you can tell that the actors were having fun doing this, and the wooden acting even adds to the charm of the film.I think a remake, with a higher budget and perhaps a more elaborate plot, would be great, but probably not half as much fun to watch as this. Enjoy!
