Scarlet The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
merklekranz I will admit that there are a few moments of chuckles in "Student Bodies", such as the attempt to insure an "R" rating, and the curious use of an eggplant as a murder weapon. However there is much dead material connecting these bright spots. Many scenes go on for far too long, such as the stair climbing scene. The characters are somewhat of a mixed bag, with the lanky janitor perhaps the standout. The horse heads joke is funny the first time, but then is overused to the extreme. It is my guess that everything was stretched to the maximum to attain feature length for something that would have difficulty filling out a "Saturday Night Live" skit. - MERK
Ben Larson Someone said, "But spoof always needs to be done with just the right touch. It can't be direct, as there's no need to molest the dead. But it can't be so obscure that the average joe won't catch onto the jokes." Well, I must not be the average joe, as I totally missed the jokes in this movie.Eschewing knives, guns, hatchets, etc for horsehead bookends, erasers, eggplant, and paper clips as murder weapons makes no sense to me at all. The guys all get hefty bags. What's up with that? Well, I guess the ultimate parody of the slasher films is one where there is no nudity and no blood.
wes-connors We begin on an evening which happens to be Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Jamie Lee Curtis' birthday. A heavy-breathing figure wearing rubber gloves and squishy galoshes enters an unlocked home where babysitter Angela Bressler (as Julie) is anticipating a sexual encounter with hunky boyfriend Keith Singleton (as Charlie). Overcoming sticky stairway gum, "The Breather" manages to find the young couple before committing their dirty act, stabbing her with paper clips and stuffing him in a plastic garbage bag.Homeowners Douglas Cotner and Joan Browning Jacobs (as Mr. and Mrs. Hummers) return, eager to watch "The Dukes of Hazzard" after seeing a bad horror film. They discover the babysitter is not only dead, but also failed to wash the dishes. Nobody mentions the baby. All of the above is very funny and often suspenseful - but, the film slowly peters out. A later funny moment has an announcer coming on to guarantee the film will be rated "R" although the opening contains has the prerequisite frontal nudity.***** Student Bodies (8/7/81) Michael Ritchie ~ Kristen Riter, Matthew Goldsby, Jerry Belson, Joe Flood
BaronBl00d ...are two of the comedic bits that I found fairly funny in this very original spoof of the incredibly popular slasher movie genre that bombarded the screens in the early 80's after Halloween, Friday the 13th, and a slew of other holidays turned gore-fests. This film starts out strong with some real creative scenes and ideas and, like the genre it is spoofing itself, soon falls into repetitive devices to try and be funny and loses its zip. That notwithstanding Student Bodies is interesting to a point as it is the forerunner of movies like Scream, Scary Movie, and others. It saw that the slasher genre was ripe for a harvest of cliché-riddled formula to be made fun of in film. The budget is pretty low here and the acting talents are less-than-stellar, but the spirit is pretty genuine throughout. Some of the actors playing the teachers were the funniest as was the body count throughout the film. The ending is a little too forced for my liking but overall Student Bodies delivers what is promises - just like the slasher films it pokes fun at.
