Moustroll Good movie but grossly overrated
Curapedi I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
Janae Milner Easily the biggest piece of Right wing non sense propaganda I ever saw.
Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

Jill Tracey Some criticism in these pages have expressed opinions about the accuracy of the story, which after all, it's a work of fiction and liberties have been taken. It would have been impossible to make another film including so much that is contained in the book. The great way the film is divided into different chapters is a clever way to let the viewer know what's about to be seen.Elijah Wood, a magnificent film actor, does an excellent work by underplaying Jonathan. Mr. Wood makes one of his best appearances in any film with his interpretation of the main character. The felicitous casting of Eugene Hutz as Alex, the Ukranian tour assistant and translator, seems to be an idea made in heaven. Mr. Hutz is about the best thing in the film. His arcane usage of English gives the film a funny angle that delights the viewer. Boris Leskin as Alex's grandfather and driver of the tour car makes a valuable contribution to the film, as well as Laryssa Lauret, who is seen in the last part of the movie. The excellent cinematography of Matthew Libatique brings the splendor of the Czech Republic's countryside in all its magnificence. The musical score by Paul Cantelon is heard in the background adorning the film in ways that it adds a richness to the movie.Above all, this is a triumph for Liev Schreiber, the first time director that will surely go far in whatever he decides to do next.
reneweddan Everything is Illuminated is far better than I was expecting, it's nearly impeccable. The story is about a young man who pays for a guide to help him find the woman who saved his father from death during WWII. He embarks on a journey with a guy and his grandfather.Eugene Hutz is absolutely hilarious and his accent is amazing. He definitely was a great choice, not sure why they chose a musical artist, but he definitely was the best choice for all the right reasons. Elijah Wood does great portraying his character, the sophisticated young American.Although you will enjoy this film, it should be noted that the comedy is extremely apparent in the first half of the film, but it slowly dims down, then dies altogether as the film transitions into a more dramatic story. You should think of this film as a Comedy -> Comedy/Drama -> Drama, in that precise order.Enjoy it for what it is, and enjoy the artistic value of such a film.
KomplexKX Wonderful depiction of family relationships, struggles of a rigid search and post-war Ukraine. There are many expressionistic words that I could use to describe this movie, so I'll just say that it just makes you think. Think about your own life, your own relationships and maybe make you realize, how simple things in life are and that you really have to enjoy everything that comes your way, no matter how bad it might look at first. The movie gives an image of Ukraine that might not seem the most attractive these days, but was quite accurate a couple of years ago. Despite this "unattractiveness", it actually is really attractive, with it's simplicity and innocence. The relationships between the characters are exactly what make the movie so appealing. A grandchild trying to be loved by his grandfather. A young man searching for his roots, acquiring friendship and "illumination" along the way, though facing misunderstanding at the start.Leaving subjective opinions aside, the movie might not have brought anything new to the film industry regarding directing, cuts or whatever, but is still utmost enjoyable. I must admit that I didn't really know who Liev Schreiber before I saw the movie, thinking to myself that his directing debut might not work well with this kind of melodrama, but I guess I was wrong. Also casting Elijah Wood was a good choice and he fits perfectly into the movie along with the other characters. This low-budget movie is definitely a "top-notch" movie, encapsulating everything you would expect from high class entertainment, that you do not get much these days. A movie that makes you laugh, cry, think.10/10
