Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.
NekoHomey Purely Joyful Movie!
Borserie it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
Jenna Walter The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
geokram101 Beach Rats does not exploit, forgive, promise or give any explanations. Inherently, the film is a character study, but also a mere observation of the profound difficulties in being human. The main character is progressively lost, lacking any harmony between his genuine identity, and the one he has built over time for the sake of survival: something we all do, as a social species. This dissonance gives way to so much pain, and not once does Hittman make it something it is not. Sometimes, suffering is just suffering and has no purpose. But we do see, from time to time, how Frankie truly is: he is not his exterior. This gives his suffering purpose. Although there is no clear resolution, which is disappointing, there is hope. I think people have forgotten that the whole point of narratives is not for the sake of the characters but for us, the audience. It's clear, here, that we will not see his fractured life become one. There is no resolution, which could easily have been achieved had there been more time. I cannot blame the lack of time on the cinematography though, as it is delicate, humane, and builds up Frankies world, his human experience. This focus on the smallest of things, is beautifully used to further this study in this particular point in Frankies life. Had there been a mere 30 more minutes, I do not doubt for a moment that the whole plot in of itself would be perfect.Beach Rats is not a perfect film at all. But it is not an exaggeration at all
Varun Bhargava The movie quite accurately depicts what closeted boys do and go through.. Acceptability in society is kept above self and for good. Fear of rejection by friends is quite what the character depicts and chooses not to accept himself as he is. Even when in company of a gay man, fears what might happen if he accepts the truth. The ending however is a bit abrupt. Great concept but not so good execution..
jeffgillman It's a tough movie, a young guy struggling with his sexuality, but what a beautiful young guy, and an amazing performance. I hope he goes on to great things.
prasanttrimurthy It is fairly rare to come across a movie that significantly explores the innermost obscure functioning and brief outer pretensions of a single male character. Beach Rats is one of those movies that realistically demonstrate, through choices and actions, the character's wistful mindset. It appears to be a masterly study of a character from some book, which becomes clear as you finish watching it with immense patience. Movies of this ilk may or may not resonate with you. Neither does it make for the most memorable experience. For many of us, such stories often embrace the category of 'eccentric' or 'peculiar' or even 'unappealing'. Eliza Hittman attempts to portray the depth and intricate emotions of young Frankie who spends his time like a nomad with his roguish local friends, a so-called girlfriend and, at night, with older men he finds online. Frankie is struggling to accept himself and refuses to put a name on his nocturnal sexual escapades, forcing himself in the cage of straightness while enjoying submissive, masochistic gay encounters.Eliza did it successfully, just like in her previous girl-centric movie! Hittman's voice is visible through her powerful, naturalistic direction. She is by now known for stuffing authentic elements in her movies where dialogue remains economical, intuitive and understandably latent, and where characters speak with their rapacious eyes and harrowing circumstances.Harris Dickinson, I am pleased to say, has done a dazzling job by playing such a challenging role. He surprisingly blurs the line between a potential actor and a movie character through his winsome demeanour. He partially reminded me of Michael Fassbender from Shame. There is no doubt that Harris as a male lead gives distinctive performance and is a gifted young actor, but it would have been better if the story was imbued with as many shades as given to Frankie in the film.I tend to welcome and appreciate many kinds of movie, but after reading a lot about Beach Rats I thought I would fall for it. I liked it, indeed...but can't say I loved it. The only thing I loved most about the film is brilliant, gorgeous Harris Dickinson whose sterral act buoyed up my interest until the end.
