KnotMissPriceless Why so much hype?
FuzzyTagz If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
Orla Zuniga It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review
Matylda Swan It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.
SnoopyStyle Navy sailor Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is haunted by his past and starts a fight. He is forced to be evaluated by psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). He is volatile and uncooperative. Eventually he opens up about his abused past. His foster father Mr. Tate was a preacher and his foster mother was very abusive. He falls for fellow sailor Cheryl Smolley (Joy Bryant) but his outbursts continue to hound him. This is Denzel Washington's directorial debut and he shows confidence in his work. It doesn't hurt that he's one of the best actors around. He points the camera at himself and Derek Luke. The acting carries the day. He finds a real gem in the newcomer who holds his own against the veteran. There is a genuine spirit about the characters and the performances. Psychiatry sessions are always in danger of being static and that threatens this movie as well. The two actors generate enough energy to stay out of flat waters.
floyd beck Thankfully, I was able to watch this on BET TV which removed profanity and porn. I, personally, found it to be excellent because I also was beaten as a child; had a father who left me when I was 2 years old; had a drunk step-father who beat me often; and had a women who attempted to have sex with me when I was 9 years old. I also became successful, though I did not have a counselor like in the movie. For me, being "born-again" was the solution. In the movie, the actors are excellent, save for Denzel who cannot leave his personality which sticks out like a red pimple on one's nose in every movie he is in. Thankfully, Denzel does not appear too often. The struggle of main actor is very realistic. An a senior citizen now, I found the movie very pertinent and encouraging, especially coming from a similar slum background. It may help those who suffer from the effects of bad upbringing, whether one watches the full or TV edited version.
MarcoLara Antwone Fisher is a movie about self discovery, but also about the emotional inertia that moves us to the places we end up to be.Antwone Fisher has his options already narrowed because of the place where he was born and the parents he had. His life is a reflection of a sad statistic, and he can hardly blame others to what happened to him because, as his psychologist mentioned, is the result of passing the same treatment generation after generation.Antwone Fisher made me think about how important is to know the forces that, often without your explicit knowledge, push you where you are, and if you don't like the places where these forces carry you, to know that there is a way out. This is not a hero movie, nor a movie of beggar turned millionaire. Is a movie about the path of self-discovery and self-healing.Key phrase: "Sorry Mr. Director, but the chick is way too pretty for that kid"
dennisdunkerley The plot is predictable and not very original. The movie contains few, if any, surprises and simply seems geared to win minority sympathy votes from the abused. The ending is especially weak, with Washington simply telling his patient that he's "succeeded". Big deal, Antwone, life isn't fair and people that abuse children are sick. Get over it. Did we really need to see the woman whipping children with a wet towel? Also, it's more likely Antwone's anger comes from fear and an exaggerated sense of entitlement, than his actual abuse. All in all, this movie presents inferences as though they were facts and asks the audience to agree not only that these are the source(s) of his anger, but that realizing this prepares him for a loving relationship. It strains credibility.
