Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."

I don't get it. Is this a story about why you shouldn't be unethical? Why you shouldn't take pro bono work? If it's about the work Roman was doing, the movie sure didn't make it the primary story.
I kept waiting for it to get to the point, but it never did.
Great actors. Horrible writing. Horrible directing. Horrible overall storyline.

This film is so underrated. Denzel Washington plays the main character of the movie, a criminal defense lawyer. When the film premiered, some footage was cut for timing reasons, which can be seen on the dvd. It didn't do well at the box office due to minimal promotion yet it's finding new life on home media. Go see it.

Roman J Israel was a VERY MOVIE starred by Denzel Washinton. The first part of this movie was very couraging ,which told the audience what kind of person Roman was. It may also show the great spirit of some attorneys in America .However, in the second part of this movie, Roman began to fall ,which was very sad .The change of Roman's attitude was obvious ,and was also questioning the society about how they consider people like Roman .To be frank ,it is really hard for people like Roman to fight for what they believe ,with others keep telling you to give up. To our joy ,Roman finally changed his attitude again. However, he still has to pay for the price of what he had done previously. There were two changes of Roman in the movie while another person changed once ,too----the boss whom Roman worked for .He used to be very materialistic but in a way Roman changed him .In the end, he helped finish the job left by Roman .As I said above ,it might be hard for people like Roman to survive in his career .However ,the change of the boss' attitude showed the great influence of such people ,and that is one of the most importance thing !
Besides, there are some more plots that are worth discussing. In the middle of this movie ,Roman was returning home when he met someone wanted to rob him. He was beaten and his glasses were broken ,which speed the fall of Roman .I guess Roman must have thought that he himself always stood for such people in the court while now this guy was trying to steal my IPOD.Was his faith he stood for meaningful?Such question can only be answered by the one who asked it himself .Luckily , after a wrong journey ,Roman returned to what he had believed . What's more, the end of this movie was quite touching ,qpparently. Many people might think Mr Roman was killed yet I think his heavy big left on the ground may be a Trick. Maybe Roman didn't get killed. The papers his boss handed over later still kept his name. It is Traditional to think that if a character didn't get killed , we would see him again before the movie ended. However, nobody knows whether he really died for sure. Therefore , this might show some sort of hope of the film makers that they wished people like Roman, either alive or dead , would live in others' heart. Finally, I would like to "complain" about some places unsuitable in this movie .Denzel did a great job acting as Roman J Israel ,Esquire yet sometimes he spoke a few words in a very quick way (see the scene that Roman talked with the boss about his belief and ambition after work). There is another scene that he went to see his ex-colleague at hospital .He talked to his friend's wife about how he felt disappointed at his faith. These sentences may sound weird to both the simple housewife and the audience .

To watch Denzel Washington perform in any one of his films is enjoyable. This story of an attorney dedicated to righting the wrongs of society finds himself violating his own principles when a requirement for the basic needs of life overtakes his idealism. If you like Washington, you'll like this performance.
