ThedevilChoose When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
Loui Blair It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
mathmaniac This movie about someone named David Mark (Robert Durst in the real world) is frightening when you consider how much the protagonist allegedly got away with. In the beginning of the story, David's father says, 'You know - she'll never be one of us' to David, to which David replies, 'Yes, isn't that great?' (or something like that). It doesn't take long before you realized how unpleasant and morally corrupt the Marks family is and you are telling yourself the same thing about this young woman named Katie in the movie. You think, 'God, I HOPE she's never that.'For half of the film, it's an interesting yarn. Then it turns to the kind of thriller horror movie that makes you want to protect your own children from these people. At some point, you also realize this is not a courtroom drama where justice will be done - the narration comes from the courtroom but you realize that it is an interrogation that is more like a checklist than a fact-finding exercise. I am sorry that the person Katie ever got mixed up with this family. I am sorry that the David Marks character happened to be born to this family - in another lifetime, he would be a happy child growing up surrounded by love in a stable environment. Every bad story you have ever heard about landlords seems to be displayed in this film that is really about the corrupt Marks family business. They are hell-bent on squeezing every penny out of the tenants, cutting corners if given any chance to do that, and building the proceeds of their rentals into private wealth. Meanwhile, the tenants survive in squalor. That's probably as realistic a description of the Marks business as you can get. Yet I can't help but think that as the wealthy get wealthier and the poor get poorer, as it happens in the U.S., the poor who pay rent to these people are one step above homelessness - for which they are not only grateful but have given the landlords a chance to paint themselves as heroes in the community. Such it may always be. Such it may have always been! Which is why a certain type of person is drawn to this kind of enterprise.
Floated2 All Good Things (2010) is a love-crime drama released into limited theaters in 2010, which is based on true events. Starring are, Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst who are excellent as David and Katie. The film is thoroughly engrossing but somewhat frustrating towards the end, only because viewers are denied knowledge of the truth as much as the key figures involved in the real-life case have been. All Good Things was overlooked when it was released because of Blue Valentine, the other film starring Ryan Gosling playing a similar character in a similar tone of film, which received much praise. Although, this film is quite good but could have been developed slightly better. The acting here is great and convincing, both leads play their part well. The story is quite interesting, though the climax doesn't fully feel as authentic and captivating as it could have been.
juneebuggy This is a love story and murder mystery. Slow start to this movie but with solid performances from Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella. The story is kinda bizarre and I'll admit to being lost at times and while I know its been based on true events and that much of the real story is still a mystery I would have liked a bit more of an explanation (or a directors interpretation at least) regarding David's random moments of dressing like a woman (weird) and also exactly what his relationship with Lilly and the neighbour who killed for him was? Anyways its well acted, an interesting story -to say the least which traces David Marks, who back in 1982 was suspected of but never tried for killing his wife Katie. The truth is eventually revealed and in the end this movie doesn't leave it up to you to decide if he did it or not. Frank Langella gives a powerful performance as real estate mogul Sanford Marks and has a fantastic death scene. 03.13
Leila Cherradi The main actors give great performances but it's unbelievable that their characters are related to each other. The father is not likely to be Gosling's character's father. It just doesn't match. The romance between Dunst and Gosling is not intimate, not sensitive enough. If you have seen some prior work of Gosling, as in Blue Valentine, you know what I mean. And you know what I mean anyway if you ever had a real love story yourself. The sex scene is the worst I have ever seen! I mean, Gosling puts his hand under her dress, but so low that of course he touches nothing, she opens his pants as he waits there, they kiss and we clearly see her mouth with her tongue moving in the space, then they are on the bed : there are no emotions, there is nothing real about it, you almost hear the director give the instructions! Then when they are under the shower, they keep a distance between their bodies. I swear to God, I heard Dunst whisper : look, I'm an actress, this doesn't have to be real, so don't touch me, OK? Plus, even if I love Gosling very much, even if I love to see him naked, I found him to not be the right actor for the shirtless scenes. I mean, come on, he is musclebound, which doesn't make it plausible for him to be a weak, freaky man, jealous of his wife.So I found the casting to be very very bad. Casting being the art of putting together the actors in a way that will make the whole work. Now, every performance respectively was astounding.About the scenario, there are also some weaknesses : it is hard to understand why a woman would endure for so long such a hard relationship. There are not much clues. It is bizarre why she comes back at the end to that freak. And when she finds the blood of the dog, what she does? She goes show him! And that's the same woman that went through the window to save herself from him when he hit her???? Come on! The movie tends to make us see that woman only as a victim, almost a moron! And that doesn't seem fair to me. If she wanted, she could have gone back to where she came from and begin her life again, couldn't she? So I assume she got used to money. Or was she that in love? Well, it is a mystery anyway, love...Also, I've read in some review that Gosling's character tries to look normal until he can't hide his craziness anymore. I haven't seen that. He just switches from sane to insane. I thought he was normal in the beginning! A bit weird, but just like I am ;), not a psycho! Now the story itself is very interesting, very touching, and very creepy. If it can help only one woman to run away from a psycho, even if she has no penny, then it would have been useful. It is absolutely non-understandable though that the real person has not been pursued for the murder of his wife, especially since he has been able to kill someone later on, and to cut that someone into pieces! I mean, come on! And the funny thing is that he had only 9 months of jail for improper disposal of a body! What? Seriously? How does anyone want people to stop killing people if the justice is so light? Anyway, if you're a fan of Ryan Gosling, I recommend that movie! If you're a fan of Ryan Gosling, I recommend any movie he's in! :)
