OllieSuave-007 As I have a keen interest in Greek mythology, it was great seeing some of the Greek Gods come to life in this action-packed TV series, starring Lucy Lawless as Xena, the Warrior Princess, who was once a ruthless warlord bent on conquering lands (as first introduced in a three-part episode in "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys"), but has now decided to repent for her sins by fighting evil for the greater good and helping people in need. Also starring alongside Lucy is Renee O'Connor, who plays Xena's traveling companion Gabrielle. The friendship formed between the two was touching and serves as one of the most important plot elements of the series, as Xena believes Gabrielle's friendship has saved her from herself and has helped her move on with her life after spending years committing evil. The New Zealand countryside setting is refreshing and the costumes are colorful and vibrantly done. The music score by Joseph LoDuca is haunting and catchy and the acting is spot-on, with a good mixture of humor and drama. The action scenes were well choreographed well and the writing for each episode was appealing (episodes alternate between light-hearted to serious drama, with me preferring the former).I enjoyed how each Greek god was portrayed, from the all-powerful Zeus to the sinister and cunning Aries, and from the sassy and beautiful Aphrodite to the wise but devious Athena. It's a treat seeing Xena fighting bad guys left and right, trying to redeem herself from her dark past, standing up to hordes of Greek and Norse Gods, demi-gods, evil warlords and corrupt royalty. Xena and Gabrielle make a great duo, and when joined by the comedic warrior wannabe Joxer (Ted Raimi), the three are just an unstoppable force. Each character, good or bad, have his/her own unique purpose and leaves a memorable mark on the show. It's a real bummer that some of the ***spoiler ahead*** beloved reoccurring characters get killed off later in the series - puts a real damper on the show and makes you yearn for the better bygone days ***spoiler ends*** I also enjoyed seeing how a variety of culture elements were represented in the show, like the many countries visited including Greece, China, India and Egypt and the multitude of religions delved into.Always a good time watching the show for my brother and I - felt like we were on the journey with Xena and Gabrielle.Grade A-
SnoopyStyle It's ancient Greece in the times of the Olympian Gods, centaurs, and Amazons. Xena (Lucy Lawless) is a warrior trying to atone for a life of fighting. Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) is a small town girl desperate for adventures. She joins Xena recording their journeys in her scrolls. Xena loves to fish and fly a kite. They travel as far as China and India. They often get involved with Gods Ares and Aphrodite, the comical Joxer the Mighty, revenge-obsessed Callisto, Julius Caesar, and the monotheism of Eli.My favorite episodes are humorous especially with Joxer. This is solid adventure B-TV. There is plenty of fighting stunts. The use of historical and religious figures is a mix bag. Sometimes it's awkward rewriting biblical and other religious stories. The shows in faraway places can also get awkward. Staying with Greece and the Olympian Gods should be enough for this show. The best part is the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle. The show even plays with the homoerotic perceptions of the audience. The landscape of New Zealand is perfect for ancient Greece and it's a commendable production considering its limitations.
kartifos I grow up with these series! I love them and they are in my childhood dreams! The first three season of the series are my favorite! Especially the humorous episodes! My favorite were: "Warrior...Princess" "Warrior...Princess...Tramp" "Been there done that" "A day in the Life" "A Comedy of Eros" "The Bitter Suite" "Fins, Femmes and Gems" etc. After the 4rth season when the series mixed the Greek mythology with religion, things meshed up. But anyway because if the first 3 season I still love Xena! I have seen everything made a movie, I wonder what may be of a movie with Xena :The Warrior Princess theme. P.S If you try to learn Ancient Greek History from Xena, you are mistaken!
ollieoxen27 Xena Warrior Princess was a fine serial adventure series from the eighties. Lucy Lawless played Xena flawlessly as a character revealing strength, determination, vulnerability, humor, and compassion. Thankfully the program didn't probe a possible intimate relationship between Xena and Gabriella. It was a family series with such topics left alone. Every week they rolled out new fascinating and often evil adversaries that were great to watch. If I remember back correctly there was even a Shakespearean or operatic episode but I may be mistaking it for another series. Gabriella was great reminding me of some girl from my past maybe a forgotten girl next door. They were ladies I wanted to spend good clean time with every week.I'd like to see a movie version with Olivia Wilde as Xena, and Allesandra Toresanni as a blond playing Gabriella. It would be lots of fun.
