Synopsis

A coming-of-age comedy set in the "go-go" 80s that is equal parts hijinks and heartfelt about a college student enjoying a last hurrah before summer comes to an end--and the future begins. David Myers, an assistant tennis pro at the Red Oaks Country Club in suburban New Jersey in 1985, is both reeling from his father's heart attack and conflicted about what major to declare in the fall. While there, he meets a colorful cast of misfit co-workers and wealthy club members including an alluring art student named Skye and her corporate raider father Getty.

Reviews

Afouotos Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Mathilde the Guild Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Scarlet The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
ginnseven The pilot episode was sort of cliché and riddled with 80s music in an attempt to remain authentic. It tries too hard to be 80s and it shows. Unlike a great series like Stranger Things that builds on a solid premise that just happens to be set in that time period, Red Oaks tries to make an 80s themed series out of a jumble of the eras stereotypes. The biggest letdown is the main character who is far too nerdy to fit the part. No offense to this actor but he should be cast as the lead characters nerdy pal. There is no way someone like him would be a tennis pro dating a beautiful aerobics instructor in the 80s, in real life or in a movie. I remember the 80s and looks and materialism were the norm and the nerd did not get the girl unless it was at the end of a sappy flick, and even then the movie ended. They could have built it up and moved towards this character getting it all in the end which would have been a true 80s coming of age story. But this series does not know what it wants to be, a coming of age Wonder Years or a wacky Caddyshack free for all. I will try a few more episodes but I do not suspect much more.
yeah1980 I started this with no expectations, actually all other Amazon Prime Video series did not get into me that much... OK, we are in the '80, so if you are born exactly in 1980 like me you are going to have a lot of revival moments, this is not sweating '80 like some other piece of TV streaming show (cough... stranger, cough... things, cough...), but there is a lot of quotes and reference everywhere. Then the whole plot is pivoting around niceness, and this is heart- warming, too many series are around just bad and evil characters, here you will find comfort after a hard work day. But the most important thing is: Time Travel. When I watch this show, time goes faster than ever! It is unbelievable how an episode slides smoothly to the end, while you think you are actually in the middle of it. This is actually the most sophisticated magic entertainment can do, and it must mean something if this happens.
arampapik Show takes place in the 80's. If you've grow up during that time, you will feel a sense of nostalgia while watching this show. Big camcorders, no cell phones, big hair, colorful sunglasses, denim, aerobics, etc. Kind of makes me want to re-live the times. Show is very well made. Great cinematography , good selection of actors, lots of settings, easy to follow plot with just the right amount of side stories going on. I would re-watch the show... can't say that about many shows. Can't wait till season 3.
alexanderloughlin Perfect. Unlike many other comedy programs at the moment Red Oaks seems to always have a clear story line. This story line is filled with humour which is perfectly written and performed. I felt series 2 was not as good as series 1 but it had a lot to live up to. But saying that some of the humour in series 2 was superb. Such as series 2 episode 8 where Wheelers car door fails and Barry goes flying out. The story telling for that laugh was great with previous episodes showing Wheeler had a broken passenger door. Red Oaks is amazing, the casting is superb with Craig Roberts as David. But what's great about Red Oaks is I can't find anything else like it which is difficult to find right now as there are a lot of comedies that are very similar and are just being made for the sake of it. I would recommend Red Oaks to anyone it is one of my favourite shows at the moment.
