AniInterview Sorry, this movie sucks
Lawbolisted Powerful
Mathilde the Guild Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Laura Alonso Engaging, witty, whimsical, has a melange of all tones in the right measure (sad, cheery, humorous, dramatic, romantic (but not corny), noir). It has a similar visual style to the series "Pushing Daisies" and shares connections with Wes Anderson's cinematography, but with a sad tone lining the film, the director maintians his own style. Just as a great horror film director manifests with characters on screen that embody our incomplete fears from nighmares, Richard Ayoade captures what we romanticise when we have a feeling of longing, joy or admiration but don't directly think about it. The actors are lovely and gave a great performance, they achieve the aforementioned Wes Anderson style, fairytale-like yet stil natural. It's incredible how well performed Simon (main charater) is and how it's possible that Jason ("the double") is coming from the same body/person.The film does not have a cheap feeling, nor that of a grand hollywood production, but that's exactly what makes it perfect, it adds to the setting. I was supprised at how well mended the plot was, I thought it would only be possible to live up to the synopsis if it had constant supernatural fenomena but it doesn't, you have to watch it to see the beautiful story they weave.Personal note: This film made me feel inspired because it was so well made, very aspect of it touched me. The characters and actors, especially the mimetisation of Jesse's and Mia's performance, and the character growth of Simon made me admire them and think about personalities and actions outside of the story, in this world and in my life. I haven't watched the director's other films yet but I expect to have the same feeling with them (I already get the same feeling of cheerful wistfulness simply with Submarine's trailers!, which has been on my list for quite a while now).
The Couchpotatoes I must have missed something or maybe I'm just completely missing the point but I really don't get why this movie would score such a score. It is incredibly boring, from the first second to the last second you won't see anything interesting. After watching the first ten minutes you basically know this movie isn't going anywhere and that you're losing precious time of your life. The only reason I didn't score it the lowest possible is because of the techniques of filming. You can clearly see that he knows what he's doing. But with filming techniques alone you won't make a good movie. You also need a good story and good actors. It just lacks both of them. The Double is such an annoying movie, a pure waste of your time.
Giantjott Before you get all pissy and shout at your computer screen that this movie is based on a Dostoevsky novella from the 1800s, let me be clear: I am not inferring that the story somehow ripped off other contemporary sources. I'm just saying that I felt distracted while viewing The Double by its many similarities to films I've seen and that have seeped into popular culture. Specifically, I kept thinking of Fight Club, The Tenant, Youth In Revolt, Enemy, Rear Window, Brazil, Eraserhead, Dead Ringers, and The Trial. Which leads me to the question: Do we need this movie? Even if it is a mostly faithful adaptation to a hitherto unadapted story by a world famous 19th century novelist, which recalls excellent films from the history of cinema, and which was beautifully, skilfully crafted and acted...do we really need another surreal-noir about the anonymity of corporate jobs? Or another movie with the doppelganger/alter ego paradigm, especially one which does nothing to reinvent or subvert the genre? It should be noted that I enjoyed watching this film for its set design and b/c of Wasikowska's enchanting ways. But not for its story. Which isn't to say I think the source material is weak, but that the elements which had been so intriguing when the novella was first published have now become tropes of this type of film. In short, The Double left me thinking of the films it resembled, already forgetting the doppelganger (could this have been the point?).
volleyballmaniac As I speak, this movie gets 3 out of 5.Not deserved. This director is a genius beyond the times. At least for the US.The Director of Photography for this movie is amazing. He tells part of the story just with his lighting expertise. So much more with this movie. The lighting envelopes your mood in the movie. The choice of music, I almost think was the lighting director's taste. The music matches the visual imagery perfectly. The Director, the reason all this could happen; a genius ahead of his time (in the US). I you watched such great films as Amelie, and appreciated them, he uses this same theme.Visual Imagery to tell a story PLUS matching music. To top it off he chose the best lead actor, and he played it perfectly. This is one of the few movies that I watch and there is no flaw in acting, casting, music or plot.It is a masterpiece.I don't care what 48 percent of Trump America thinks. This is a visual, 'French inspired' Masterpiece. The fact, that at time of writing it has 3 stars, only make me like it more. This is a movie without any stars, just talent and creativity and most of America thinks it sucks (3 stars). Idiocracy can vote on Netflix, and they not only elect Trump, they decide what they like.Good for them. This movie gave me hope in American cinema.A medium that has let us down so often. This movie is a chance to reclaim originality in cinema. It is a movie that will gain fame over time because of it's cinematic excellence.Vote 1 star on this, it won't matter to me; it will just affirm that you aren't ready for a movie like this.Cinematic perfection.
