Synopsis

Ouran High is a school for the extremely wealthy or, in Haruhi's case, the extremely talented. But no amount of talent will help when Haruhi accidentally drops an eight million yen vase in a music room. The vase was the property of Ouran High School Host Club, a group of attractive young men who, for a fee, provide their time and affections for their lovesick clientele: the female students. Fascinated by this strange new specimen, a poor and clumsy commoner, they force Haruhi to work for them until the debt is repaid; but they get a lot more than they bargained for...

VeteranLight I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
MoPoshy Absolutely brilliant
Cleveronix A different way of telling a story
Insomniac Panda This is one of the first animes I had ever watched- I do not regret it!**SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT**It is about how Haruhi Fujioka, a "Commoner" in the eyes of the school, has to pay off an 8,000,000 Yen debt to a host club, including an idiot "king" called Tamaki Suoh, who's quirky attitude masks his sad past, Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin (My favourite characters), using their bond as twins to perform what's commonly known as "Twincest" (best part of the anime xD), Minskuni Haninozuka (Honey) and Takashi Morinozuka (Mori), who's family's are experts in martial arts, and Kyoya Ootori, who's knowledge and funding skills hold the host club together. She must play the role of a male, due to her boyish appearance and attitude fooling the Host Club for a short time into believing she is of the opposite gender. Later in the series, she is the subject of a love triangle. This, however, is resolved in the finale. Speaking of the finale, any TamaHaru shippers may flip tables in rage, but i'll leave you to find out why. With it's characters comes an incredible cast- I've seen both Dub and Sub and honestly prefer the Dub! FUNimation studios have an incredible range of VA's and they play their characters well.I recommend this anime 100%, however, I do not give it a perfect score... Because there is no season 2. Other then that, I would love for any anime watchers, new or old, male or female, young child or old adult, to watch this anime- It will be a decision they will never regret!
Screen Squinty This is an enjoyable show for the family. From the technical end of things, the character style ( done by Kumiko Takahashi) is not completely faithful to the manga like other animes such as Inuyasha and Naruto for example, but it doesn't veer off to much style wise from their manga counterparts in character design, leaving them still relatively recognizable. The character style works with the bright upbeat tone of the show, even with the few moments of seriousness that pop up. The school itself as the pinkish opulent stage that much of the plot is set in is perfect for the exaggerated qualities of the rich lifestyles it is portraying. The main character, particularly the main focus of the show Haruhi, is the shining light of this show. She breaks the usual mold of female characters in high school based anime, or even other teenage girls in television from the Western end is a delightful mix of straight-man, brutal honesty, caring, and Charlie Brown; a real step forward for female characterization. The rest of the Host club characters themselves makes its business in the narrative on playing up qualities of tropes of the different types of teenage boy found primarily in shojo (manga typified in style and story content as geared towards female audiences) such as the Princely, Cool type, Mischievous/Forbidden love, Lolita, Quiet Type. You certainly get an introduction into what classifies these tropes are, even Haruhi is one of these male tropes as "the natural." Normally, highly trope based characters, especially main characters as the host club, run the risk of quickly becoming uninteresting if not handled right, but in this case, these characters are almost a parody of these tropes, with just enough personalities themselves that exist outside of those tropes to let you know that the characters are not solely defined by their type. The character dynamics themselves work well, particularly between Haruhi and Tamaki, as Tamaki brings her out of her shell a bit more by livening things up and Haruhi, corralling Tamaki with her on the nose remarks. The dynamic between her and the rest of the host club is also good, though isn't quite as fun as her and Tamaki. The voice acting for both the original Japanese release and the English dub (done through FUNimation), were great talents that conveyed each character exactly, particularly Haruhi (Caitlin Glass), with her believably closer to gender neutral voice. Tamaki in particular was a joy to hear, capturing his flamboyantly narcissistic gung-ho qualities well. The story itself is great, each episode consisting of a great deal of hijinks, which are a good collection of zaniness using both expected and not so expected elements, with little quiet moments to appreciate the moral (for episodes with morals) they were trying to get across.Overall this show presented the style, tone, characters and narrative premise beautifully, upping the natural ham that made it so enjoyable from the source material, even filling in and improving on some things from the first manga volume without it veering to far from its source material until somewhere in season 2 then it veers away drastically. While it could have done to run a bit longer, perhaps taken a break to correlate with the manga a bit, and the ending of the series felt a bit rushed, it is still an enjoyable watch for everyone.
morgan davies After hearing about this anime through the internet and countless lists on great anime to binge watch, I was negated to watch this through it appearing to be aimed at girls and it seemed to be a sharp contrast from the common dark stories that usually make anime an intense experience. But after succumbing to illness and being bedridden for a few days I decided to have a look at the first episode. Oh boy, was I surprised. I can only compare it to the likes of Wes Anderson if he were to make an anime; the overflow of colour and lights, hilarious and sometimes black comedy, complete with excellently developed characters with unusual idiosyncrasies.Although its main narrative isn't anything groundbreaking or original, it's definitely portrayed differently and it's the perfect idea to be exaggerated in the world of anime. The characters are wonderful oddities and aren't afraid to be different or to explore taboo subjects. To the unknowing viewer, some of the topics shown might be considered 'over the line' but talking from the experience of watching this, it's better to embrace the weirdness of this show as it has a lot to offer in its run of 26 episodes. The show isn't driven by a hard hitting story and doesn't aim for tear-jerking moments, excessive gore or fantastical sci-fi; it uses it's simplicity to its advantage by focusing on all of the main characters and their contrasts with each other, also introducing a few hints of satire towards social class in there.Overall, I advise anyone - even if you're a guy trying to preserve your masculinity - to give this show a watch. It's outrageous and funny and the material doesn't get old, especially with the use of frequent fourth-wall breaks and genuinely sweet interludes. I was extremely surprised by this and I'll be sure to re-watch it soon.
soloriamagic08 This is a masterpiece of an anime, and I'm very picky about the anime I watch so for those words to come out of my mouth is saying something. It's 26 episodes of pure genius. Okay, 25 episodes with one w.t.f. ending, but I'll rant on that later. This is a character driven show more than anything because plot wise its stupid as hell, but the brilliant characters save this show ten times over. It's about seven friends that are members of a high school host club in a prestigious, filthy rich school. This host club entertains women; however, one of the host is a women. She's the main character and the other characters antics are mostly seen from her eyes. Haruhi is a poor student on an academic scholarship. She's intelligent, assertive, nice, practical, calm, and the real cincher not a scantily clad b*tch or a vomit inducing marysue. When you have 99% of anime's featuring females being damsels in distresses to the point that you want to puke, and then when a rare anime comes along with the main female character being as far from a mary-sue that you can get, you get a bit giddy. Anyway, she looks like a boy because of an incident involving her hair and gum, and she joins the host club at first out of being forced. She broke an expensive vase and to pay of her debt she joins as a male. Of course the others find out which is humorous in itself. However, her being forced to put up with these rich fools, and their insane antics changes and everyone becomes more than best friends. They become a family. This anime is very humorous, very witty, but knows when to get serious when it calls for it. The main characters are each different and bring their own personality and back-stories to the table. The music is catchy and the animation is nice to look at. The show makes fun of every Japanese cliché in the book even within the main characters and amusedly so. However, the downside of this anime is the ending. You don't make a brilliant character driven show like this and end it like that. If a show ever needed a season two this is one of those shows. Trust me. There is a manga, but once you've seen these wonderful characters voiced and animated and all their adorable, sad, and romantic antics come to life a manga cannot fill that void. Believe me once you finish being peeved off like I was at the unfulfilling ending, and then it slowly sinks in that there is not going to be another season to resolve it, the withdrawal symptoms hurt and they hurt bad lol. In all seriousness though this anime is d*mn near perfect, and even though the ending left me wanting I don't regret watching this show and its extremely endearing characters one bit.
