Synopsis

Tohru Honda is 16 year old orphaned girl who gets invited to live in the house of her classmate, the handsome boy Sohma Yuki, and his cousins, 16 year old Kyo and 27 year old Shigure. However, these young men and parts of the rest of their family (both close and distant) hold a curse; if they are hugged by the opposite gender, they transform into animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Everyday is an adventure for sweet Tohru, as she gets to know everyone in the large family better (especially Yuki and Kyo), in both common and bizarre situations. But, the Sohma Family curse is certainly no laughing matter... it also holds horrible cruelty and heartbreak.

Bea Swanson This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
Mathilde the Guild Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Tweekums As this series opens we find protagonist Tohru Honda living in a tent in the woods; she has been living there since her mother was killed in a car crash. Her situation soon changes though when Yuki and Shigure Sohma invite her to live at their house in exchange for doing the cooking and housework. There is something Tohru doesn't know about the Sohma family though: when embraced by a member of the opposite sex they turn into an animal from the Chinese Zodiac! Yuki is a rat, Shigure a dog and Kyo, the third member of the household, a cat… the last is not actually a member of the zodiac and for that reason the rest of the family consider him cursed even more that they are themselves.Over the course of the series we meet several other members of the family as well as students from the school which is attended by Tohru, Yuki and Kyo; these includes Yuki's fan club… a group of girls he must be very careful around given the family's secret; it is just a good thing Tohru can be trusted not to tell anybody. Over the course of the series we get to see a variety events in their lives and learn a bit more about the family; including the sinister head of the family Akito. This is one of the best known Shoujo titles but just because it is Shoujo it doesn't mean that boys can't enjoy it too. The story is delightful and amusing for the most part; although it does turn much darker in the final two episodes. The characters are fun to watch and it is always interesting to see what creature the next member of the Sohma family we are introduced to will turn into! There are plenty of laughs to be had; especially when Yuki's fan club are around. The animation and style of the character design may be a little dated but that shouldn't prove to be a problem as it still looks pretty good. Overall I'd certainly recommend this series; anybody who enjoys anime should give this show a go at least once. These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
Jamie Evans It makes you laugh, cry, and about anything else that makes you feel good inside! Yes, Fruits Basket definitely has to be one of the best animes to ever hit our screens. Although the manga accompanying the series has a lot more detail and has a lot more to offer, the series seems a let-down some how. But seeing as the production team only had 8 mangas to work with at the time (Natsuki Takaya broke her wrist and was in hospital), they did the best they could. I think the anime is really good, and the open ending really lets you imagine what could happen next, or if not, you feel like a lot of questions are left unanswered; such as What about the Horse and Rooster? Why cut out so much? etc. But overall, this series really deserves recognition as a great series.
squirrellytwang Fruits basket is an anime that can seriously appeal to almost any age. It can make you laugh, cry, and wonder about whats going to happen next. The depth of the characters is amazing, and their problems are realistic. What I was MOST impressed by though, is that each character (although friends) was never the same as another character, Tohru, for example is kind hearted, selfless and hard working, while the 3 men she's taken up residence with (Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo Sohma) are all different from each other AND her. Shigure, is kind, perverted, and a tad irresponsible, Yuki, is polite, soft spoken, and smart, while Kyo is hot headed and has a horrible temper. Many other characters com in with a story, each adding to the background story of each other character, bringing in more and more depth. One thing I wished they had put in the anime was simply more from the manga, as a first manga, second anime person, i noticed that a few story lines had been cut out. However you look at it though, fruits basket is an anime not like any other, truly letting you understand the emotions of each character
Mel Nurdin OK, it all started when I was in my bookshop and picked up a free manga sneaky-peek book. There was a Fruits Basket part and I was interested in that so I started collecting the manga. Then in a DVD store, I found the anime...and bought it. I tried to watch it all everyday, it was really good! It still is! I'm a dedicated Yuki fan, of course. Basically, this anime is about a young girl called Tohru Honda who after being forced out of her home, lives in a tent. She comes across her classmate, Yuki Sohma, and he offers her a place to live, along with his two cousins, Kyo and Shigure. But then Tohru finds out that whenever the three, and ten others of the Sohma family, are hugged by a member of the opposite gender, or if their bodies are under a lot of stress, they turn into one of the Zodiac animals, Yuki is the rat, Shigure the dog, and Kyo the cat from the legend... it's funny in most places (especially Shigure) and romantic in other places as Tohru has to decide to break the curse of the Sohma family... All in all, a relief from pokemon/digimon definitely!
