derekleeb I loved this show when it came out, but upon re-watching it on DVD this week, I was surprised to find a plot hole in the first 20 minutes. How do you get from being arrested by the police for harassing/assaulting a woman to being institutionalized at a sanitarium without a phone call, your right to an attorney, or a trial? This is not what happens in the real world. Tom should have been sitting in a cell for weeks waiting for a trial, not shipped to an institution that very day. A real person in his situation would have realized this from the start and not accepted this as the normal track in the judicial system.I wish they would have thought this out better as I did enjoyed the show.
stump69 Having worked over the Christmas holiday weekend, and with little to do in the office, I started thinking about TV shows that I wished would be released on DVD. I hadn't been keeping up with the message boards because I had given up on my favorite show ever being released on DVD. Lo and behold! A search of 'Nowhere Man' turned up the news that it's being released this week, a wonderful Christmas present for those of us who enjoy watching high drama that respects the viewer. That it was canceled by UPN was a real tragedy for those of us who were hooked from the beginning. I agree with other writers who think Bruce Greenwood should have gotten an Emmy. These days there are NO series on the tube that challenge our intelligence and senses like Nowhere Man did. The creepy music by Mark Snow (X-Files) really added to the general other-worldliness of this gem. I don't think the cancellation had anything to do with it being scheduled up against Monday Night Football, because this show wasn't targeted at those viewers anyway -and likely wouldn't have been understood by the jocks anyway (;>).After working 7 days in a row, I'll be spending the next 2 days catching up with Thomas Veil and his mysterious world on this DVD set. Highly recommend this show to anyone who thinks network TV is the vast wasteland; this is one of the few classy exceptions!
MattD7279 I don't watch a whole lot of TV, and the fate of this show is a great example of one of the reasons why. The cable line is choking on sitcoms that aren't funny and commercials that are more intelligently written and directed than the shows during which they air. This is one of the best shows ever made: completely original, well acted directed and written, and no one who watched it knew what the hell was going on till the very end. Someone should be in prison for not throwing this series a lifeline. Put it on a different network, a new time slot, more commercials, ANYTHING. They could have done anything to try and save this gem, but they'd rather go for the easy buck with one show after another all created using the same, safe, talentless formula. Sprinkle today's TV with enough commercials and no one will notice how bad these shows suck. Do yourself a favor and buy the Nowhere Man DVD in late December. Shut off the TV and watch these episodes every night, and I guarantee your IQ will stop plummeting.
MartinHafer This was one of the most brilliantly written shows of the 1990s. Unlike the vast majority of shows, it did NOT hold the audience in contempt and therefore dumb down the show, but created a captivating and surreal treat for those ready to watch something different. It was similar to the British series The Prisoner (early in season one only--after that, The Prisoner lost it's brilliance and momentum very quickly). The problem is that in nearly every case like this, this is sure proof that the show will not last! Another excellent case was Brooklyn Bridge. The network also had no faith in this program because once again it was not mind rot--it was exquisitely written and engaging. Years ago, well-written shows for people who think were possible--the original Mission: Impossible is a good example. However, I fear that we are in an age where schlock sells.PS--This GREAT series is now out on DVD! Get your copy ASAP!
