Synopsis

Kindred: The Embraced is an American television series produced by John Leekley Productions and Spelling Television. Loosely based on the role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade, the series premiered on Fox on April 2, 1996, and ran for eight episodes before it was canceled on May 9, 1996. The series focused on San Francisco Police Detective Frank Kohanek who discovers his city is home to numerous vampires while investigating alleged mobster, Julian Luna. Julian is the "prince" of the city, ruler of five groups of vampires in the city, collectively called "The Kindred". The vampires survive through the "masquerade", disguising themselves as humans, and Julian strictly enforces the laws that govern them to protect their anonymity. Julian and Frank form an uneasy bond as they work together to try to prevent a vampire war and Julian struggles with his romantic feelings for human reporter Caitlin Byrne. The eight episodes of the series have been released on VHS and DVD.

Tayloriona Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Adeel Hail Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
jseph1234-262-617488 I am watching this series and being a HUGE fan of White Wolf's Vampire the Masquerade:Bloodlines and their World of Darkness books I was really enjoying how the writing and each episode was getting better and better. The Producer and Writers slowly ease you into the life of the Vampires and as the series progresses you get more and more familiar with the horror and tragedy of the life of the Kindred.Wish they had been able to continue the series but due to the tragic death of Mark Frankel who portrayed Ventrue Prince Julian, the story was not able to continue for the next season...sad but that is the life of the Kindred and the curse they lived under...sad
lynnewcats This was a wonderful series, full of interesting and charismatic actors. I've followed Patrick Bauchau, for example, ever since, especially as Sydney in The Pretender. The really sad thing is that the star, Mark Frankel, who played Julian Luna, was killed in a motorcycle accident the summer after the series wrapped, leaving a wife and two small children. Don't know if the show had any chance of continuing, but obviously that was the end of that -- and a promising career and life. Too bad there aren't real vampires, so he could have survived beyond the tragedy! As I understand it, some of those who had played the game on which it was based were unhappy with the show -- they felt it didn't really do justice to its complexity or follow its rules. Never having played the game, I had no such reservations. I thought the show was well-written and excitingly paced, and would recommend the set to anyone interested in this genre.
bjsullivan In defending the White Wolf roleplaying game, I feel that those who have commented before me have made the error most of the fans of the game made in viewing the show. The show was only loosely based around Mark Rein*Hagen's works. It was titled Kindred: The Embraced, and not Vampire: The Masquerade for a reason. Was I somewhat disappointed by the fact that they radically interspersed the powers of the kindred from what was in the game? Only because I thought it homoginized the charecters, where clan became largely irrelevant. Of the regular clans on the show, Gangrel, Ventrue and Brujah differed only in their fashion sense, while Toreador and Nosferatu benifited from having distinct and identifiable differences. My only other real complaint of the series was this: The main premise in Mark Rein*Hagen's work was that each vampire had to struggle with his inner best. "Monsters we are, lest monsters we become" being the most popular expression. Watching Julian Luna struggle with his inner beast versus his desire to retain his humanity would have added greatly to the series. That said, I was entertained by the show, and saddened by the fact that it had so short a run. I honestly hope someone takes a shot at this source material again, because I believe that in the right hands it would do very well.
vampire77 I just want to set the record straight about the shows cancellation and an anonymous comment posted in Novenber of 1998The show was cancelled because the main actor Mark Frankel who played Julian Luna died in a motorcycle accident on September 24th, 1996.--vampire
