Synopsis

Ellen is an American television sitcom that aired on the ABC network from March 29, 1994 to July 22, 1998, consisting of 109 episodes. The title role of Ellen Morgan, played by stand-up comedian Ellen DeGeneres, was a neurotic bookstore owner in her thirties. The series centered on Ellen's dealing with her quirky friends, her family and the problems of daily life. The series is notable for being the first one in which the main character came out as gay, which DeGeneres' character did in the 1997 episode "Puppy Episode". This event received a great deal of media exposure, ignited controversy, and prompted ABC to place a parental advisory at the beginning of each episode. The series' theme song, "So Called Friend" is by Scottish band Texas. A running gag was that each episode had a distinct opening credits sequence, resulting from Ellen's ongoing search for the perfect opening credits.

Reviews

Pluskylang Great Film overall
Beystiman It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
Nessieldwi Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.
Justina The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
SnoopyStyle Ellen Morgan (Ellen DeGeneres) is a talkative single gal in her early 30s. Her parents are desperate for her to find a man. In the first season, her friends include Anita Warrell (Maggie Wheeler), Holly (Holly Fulger), and roommate since college Adam Green (Arye Gross). She works at a bookstore where she's joined by illegal Canadian barista Joe Farrell (David Anthony Higgins). In the second season, she becomes the owner of the bookstore. The show adds lifelong friend Paige Clark (Joely Fisher) but loses Holly and Anita without a mention. Audrey Penney (Clea Lewis) is a recurring annoying acquaintance who joins the main cast. The third season opens with the arrival of Ellen's cousin Spence Kovak (Jeremy Piven) after getting kicked out of hospital residence for punching a patient. This is soon followed by Adam's departure. This mid-season replacement premiered a few months before Friends. In many ways, it drove on the same road as that successful show but on a different lane. The first season is four slightly-older friends trying to make their way. There is no real sexual tension between them although dating is a pervasive subject matter. The show keeps changing from season to season. I always felt that the show never found solid footing with the constant changing although it has some nice humor. There are many episodes of memorable comedic takes. There is also that one iconic TV moment. When she came out to Laura Dern (and the rest of the people at the airport), it consolidated the perception of instability in the show. In many ways, the moment is bigger than the show. They spent half the season joking about it before actually doing it. Ellen was struggling with some important real-life issues during that time. That episode came at the end of the fourth season and the show struggled to figure it out for one more season. There was a constant change in characters, lead actors, and even structure. In many ways, Ellen's personal journey colored the show and it could never maintain stability long enough to be competitive against shows like Friends.
Angel Meiru I don't mind homosexuality or bisexuality at all. In fact, I have been in that community since knowing some of my best friends. However, it is best to keep your deep dark secrets, well, SECRETS.Just seemed like with Ellen herself that this certain thought of it being a private thing did not occur to her and decided to blurt it out. That is what the whole show seemed to be about. That is kinda like saying "Hey everyone, guess what? I HAVE A FOOT FETISH!" or "I am into BDSM and must shout it out to the world."If I had to do something like that, I would turn bright fuschia in humiliation. But no, like I said I don't mind bisexual or homosexual content in TV shows, games and movies (I am interested in a show called "The L-word"), but going on about it until you stereotype youself does not cut it.
drpvonbronte I liked this show when it was called These Friends of Mine. Even for awhile when it became Ellen. I have no problem with lesbians, but when the focus started shifting -- from standard characters or even to slight lesbian focus (still ok) -- to a show simply about lesbians and nothing else it sucked.Even gay people at work with agree with this. The show simply stopped being a comedy or sit-com and became a half hour of just boredom about lesbians. Shows with a plot, jokes and homosexual characters are fine. When the show simply becomes 30 minutes of "hey America, I'm a lesbian" it gets boring, fast.
rainbow222_de In my opinion, the show was a bit boring at the beginning. Just another comedy that tries to be funny. (this time with a book shop as setting)But after Ellen´s outing quite much has changed, the stories have become really intresting, and in general the show has turned to something special and unique now. The difficult (???) topic has been presented in a very sensitive way and besides the´ve tried to fight against all the silly prejudices which are in the heads of too many people.Furthermore I like that we can laugh with Ellen, not about her. (that´s quite unusual for gay characters on TV). I´m impressed of her honesty and strength to share a part of her private life with the public. ELLEN- YOU`RE GREAT!!! Of course,I love the rest of the cast as well (JOELY,CLEA,JEREMY,DAVID)They´re like everyone´s friends. They get on your nerves, tease you, know everything better - but nevertheless you can´t live without them. In the meantime, I must confess that I hardly can´t live without Ellen and fortunately, it´s back on German TV!
