Synopsis

A Different World is an American television sitcom which aired for six seasons on NBC. It is a spin-off series from The Cosby Show and originally centered on Denise Huxtable and the life of students at Hillman College, a fictional mixed but historically black college in the state of Virginia. After Bonet's departure in the first season, the remainder of the series primarily focused more on Southern belle Whitley Gilbert and mathematics whiz Dwayne Wayne. The series frequently depicted members of the major historically black fraternities and sororities. While it was a spin-off from The Cosby Show, A Different World would typically address issues that were avoided by The Cosby Show writers. One episode that aired in 1990 was one of the first American network television episodes to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

WasAnnon Slow pace in the most part of the movie.
Unlimitedia Sick Product of a Sick System
KnotStronger This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
FirstWitch A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
rudenessq After being a Black college student during the Different World years (1987 - 1992), catching these shows on Nick at Night nowadays, brings back great memories.I remember wearing a pair of Dawayne Wayne flip-up glasses to class (even though I didn't need glasses).I remember nit-pickin the authenticity of the shows fraternity scenes both before and after I pledged myself. It's hysterical to see episodes from the first season and how dry they are compared to the 4th and 5th seasons. Marissa Tomei is one of my favorite modern actresses, and an Oscar winner to boot, but she was totally miscast in the season 1 episodes. As far as the redirection of the show, after Season 1, I think Cos realized that kids weren't interested in seeing his college experiences from the early 60s, and wisely decided to turn over the reins to Debbie Allen, who modernized the series to include issues that probably would've been considered too controversial or ethnic just 5 years earlier.Who could forget the Hate Crime/Homecoming issue that inventively looked at stereotypes and ethnic violence from both perspectives? How about the amount of fine extras in the classroom and Pit scenes? Based on just the guest musical appearances on the show, I think Different World set the standard for any show of it's era or since. Digital Underground, Envogue, Stevie Wonder, Boys II Men, Tupac, it was a Who's Who of R&B and Hip Hop from the Late 80s early 90s.The greatest strength of the show was that it portrayed the Black college community as diverse individuals and not caricatures. There were rich kids (Witley/Ron), kids emerging of poverty (Nina), and working class kids(Kim/Dawayne), all making up an interesting mural of African-American college experiences.
mjshegog This was not just one of the few shows that depicted college life, It was the only show that showed life at a Black College. From exam craziness, relationships, and finding part-time jobs to interracial dating, Step shows, and hate crimes, This show handled it all and with style. Even difficult topics (HIV/AIDS, going to war, ex-prisoners)were addressed in the way would make you laugh and think. An amazing number of famous Black Actors and Actresses passed through Hillman halls (even Whoopi Goldberg was a professor on an episode). What was originally just a Cosby spin-off proved to be truly a force of it's own. (Although you didn't really see them study after Junior Year)
talharve I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I know I am shouting, but this is how passionate I am about ADW. I have probably seen the episodes well over 20 times each, (except for the first season). I can't be biased, the first season didn't do the show not too much justice, but what show does? The character's have to get used to each other, and learn each other, that happens in any good show trying to be Great. That happens in life, life isn't perfect all the time, you have some good times and some bad times. Preachy, some say? Black folks sometimes need a little culture, real culture, not the ghetto, hoochy momma culture that white America wants us to see. But the stuck up culture that even Whitley portrayed. The Excellent and Intelligent Black king and Queen that Dwayne and Kim brought to the show. I don't know what is the problem of the Black people that called it preachy. Maybe you should read some real Black History, not the water down version.I LOVE THIS SHOW!! I still have an episode of Whitley and Dwayne's wedding, and I pop it in from time to time. I love this show so much that I am hounding Comcast in Indianapolis, IN to get the Oxygen Channel so that I can see it. There have been some good shows that have come around since A Different World, but what happens we don't support and they end up getting canceled. Like Living Single, Soul Food's last season is this year. When I think of a Different World I have a warm feeling in my heart like home. It inspired me and I am sure many sisters and brothers to realize that the college life was obtainable. So for that gift the show is an icon, and the best show of all times
gluba2000 In the first season (the only one with Denise in it) the show was kinda boring and average. The plotlines were average and not really about anything, basically just Denise's everyday problems. =/ But at the end of the first season she left (thank God!) Then during the second season and beond the show was all about WHITLEY! (and I don't mind she can be VERY funny at times.) The show tackled good issues (prejudice, drugs, and more, and also everyday life at a black college.) I started watching it when I saw that my UPN had it on for an hour (4:00 to 5:00 every Monday-Friday.) And I saw a few of the later season's then they went back to the first season episodes and I saw Lisa Bonet's name on there and wasnted to check it out and I'm hooked! If they were to ever release ADW on DVD I'd definetley buy it! =D
