BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
framptonhollis 31 Days of Spookoween: DAY EIGHTFilm #8: We Are Still Here (2015)Review: "We Are Still Here" is one of those modern indie horror flicks that seem to be helping resurrect the genre. It is jam packed with obvious flaws and occasionally falls into the easy entrapment of cliché, but it makes up for these problems by packing a real punch in its climax and by retaining a sense of mystery and intrigue throughout. The atmosphere and silence of the film is golden, some sequences are brilliantly minimalist, and the cinematography is absolutely stunning! The special effects range in quality, but most of the gore towards the end is really fun and is pulled off very well, while the more tragic and horrific side of the film is never overshadowed by the possible silliness these effects could infiltrate into the film. The performances are mostly sort of mediocre, while some of them are quite good and others are pretty bad, but it doesn't harm the film all too much. Parts of it are so slow it becomes boring, but by the end I was grateful for this because it makes the wild finale all the more exciting! The concept, at first, feels very cliché, but as the film continues and plenty more twists and turns are established, it becomes a rather clever melding of various genre tropes that successfully come together to create a haunting and creepy premise in its own right. While not a very scary movie overall, there are certainly moments of tensity, which lead towards a final feeling of "true" horror. It's not really a masterpiece, but it is clear that the filmmakers behind this one have the potential to make a masterpiece sometime in the near future.
quinimdb "We Are Still Here" is a type of movie that I thought was extinct. It reminds me of Raimi's "The Evil Dead" (1980). It constantly borders on funny, serious, disgusting, over the top gore-fest, and downright terrifying, and most of the time, it works.Anne and Paul Sacchetti have just lost a son in a car accident, so they decide to move up into a small rural town to get their mind off of things. But right off the bat, something is up. They feel it, and the viewer feels it with the film's ominous opening shots leading up to a picture frame being suddenly slammed down. As the strange occurrences escalate, they invite their friends May and Jacob Lewis, who specialize in the supernatural. From there, all hell breaks loose. Literally. The film knows how to build tension from the start. There are several instances where a shot will suddenly glide away from the protagonist, putting the viewer on edge for what will happen next, since the viewer is expecting something to happen in this spot it is now facing, but, throughout the first half of the movie, big things rarely happen. Early in the film, it is established that there is some presence there. There are glimpses of silhouette figures in the background, either stationary or suddenly swiping across the screen, only rarely does the film break this tension with a jump scare. It lets the tension build and build, and when the viewer least expects it, the jump scare hits so the viewer never knows what to expect while watching the film. There is also a constant sense that the townsfolk are never to be trusted, and we never truly know what is going on with this house and the people in the town. All this mystery culminates with an absolute, balls-to-the-walls gore fest. There is a moment in the seance scene where Jacob suddenly lets out the words "Tear his skin off his bones" completely unexpectedly, and then begins to act very strange when questioned about it, almost unaware of what had just happened. I mention this specific moment because this marks a moment in the film that I began to laugh at for its absurdity and delivery, but also made me way more tense about the following moments. From here on out, it juggles these tense thriller moments with hilarious outbursts and excessive amounts of blood. I will admit the absurdity of these moments can often kill the tension, as well as the stupidity of the characters specifically in one moment when Anne is almost killed (Why were they staring out of the window for so long?). Also, the film has got a little metaphor about acceptance and moving on at the end, which is then totally ruined by its dumb ambiguous ending that doesn't really work in this scenario.Okay, so once this hell breaks loose, the script totally falls apart in some places. There is insinuation that it was the towns fault, and that they unleashed this evil from the house but there is really no motive for them to do this, and the entire story about the man who was selling corpses kind of falls apart. The old mans whole monologue to the supernatural things at the very end is weird and doesn't make much sense when thinking about what it insinuates. There are way more holes, but basically, if you really think about it, the logistics of these scenes don't make much sense. But what is confusing dialogue in retrospect serves its purpose while watching the film, which is mostly to emphasize the danger of the town and build tension, so these flaws aren't really that big of a deal.Nonetheless, the result is pretty impressive and it manages to feel very original in this age of horror films.
Fella_shibby The best part about this movie apart from the creepy atmosphere and the beautiful ice-covered New England scenery is it's unpredictably n sudden change of pace. Really awesome cinematography by Karim Hussain (Hobo with a shotgun, Antiviral, ABCs of death). There's also a lot of very over the top but well executed supernatural violence/gore. Some awesome visual effects. It has drama, atmosphere and suspense, keeping a serious tone and setting. One thing that sets this film apart from many others is that the main characters are middle-aged and that it suddenly changed from a slow atmospheric movie into over the top fantastic gory splatter movie. The special effects are pretty well thought out and executed. There are elements that pull from classic horrors in a very good n entertaining way. Themes and motifs from popular horror films such as The Shining, The Amityville Horror, The Fog n House by the cemetery r visible. It can be called a remake of House by the cemetery. Great job from a first time film maker Ted Geoghegan. So many horror veterans in one film. Barbara Crampton (From beyond, Re- animator, lords of salem, tales of halloween, you'r next). Lisa Marie (Sleepy hollow, tales of halloween, Lords of salem, silent night). Andrew Sensenig (don't look in the basement 2, kill or be killed, Dylan dog, nine dead). Larry Fessenden ( session 9, late phases, we r what we r, jug face, u r next, stake land, mulberry street, session 9). Ted Geoghegan pays loving tribute to Lucio Fulci. Was really getting annoyed n tired with the recent pg-13 ghost movies.
Lucja Quinta I F*** hated it, it was terrible and not in a good way. I started to see it and first 10-15 minutes and I thought OK it's somewhat boring but let's give it a chance, it has many good reviews and everything, so I gave it a shot and turned out to be a complete disaster.let's begin with the history which was none(I mean there's no explanation, although some other movies pull it off quite well )and the development of the same(poor) and justification for the action of some characters. Also ..what's up with the acting? gosh they were so bad. There are people who say it's a good 70s/80s kind of film but NO way I've seen quite a few(many) films from that time and they were great. So... I feel I lost my time watching this..
