Kaydan Christian A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Rainey Dawn The wiki and other sources have this film tagged/labeled as horror and fantasy but NOT comedy. A lot of people are calling this one a comedy-horror when it is not just because there is some comic relief or comical moments within the film. It's on the campy side - so it's fun at times.Overall this film is terrible - really bad. It is mildly entertaining in it's way but mostly boring to me. It's such a shame because I like Barbara Steele and this film is a waste of her good talent - for one thing she is not in this film enough to satisfy most of us.The movie is just over 1 hour and 18 minutes long and it took 30 minutes for the car wreck to happen and the ghost witch to enter into the man's wife. After the possession, it is still pretty much of a bore to watch with a handful of good scenes.3/10
Wizard-8 Horror fans who think they are in for a treat seeing that this Barbara Steele-starring movie is another Italian production - just like the acclaimed "Black Sunday" - will be in for a big disappointment. Steele is hardly in the movie, for one thing. But even if she were in more of the movie, it probably wouldn't have helped much. This is a real sluggish affair. It's slow-moving, and there is precious little that could be considered "horror". What little horror there is happens to be really badly directed, so much so that I'm sure even audiences in 1966 weren't spooked. It doesn't help that the horror is complimented by a surprising amount of comic relief material, which isn't the least bit funny. Even at a mere 78 minutes in length, this movie is quite tough to sit through.
dwpollar 1st watched 8/28/2014 -- 3 out of 10(Dir-Mike Reeves): So so horror movie about a resurrected witch causing problems in modern day Transylvania kind of bores the viewer and creates a lot of improbable occurrences in the course of the movie. The movie starts with a count recalling an incident from a long time ago where a pre-determined witch is placed on a piece of equipment called "The Chair" where she is impaled and dipped multiple times in a local lake before expiring(one of the most elaborate & gruesome penalties portrayed on film for sure). Of course, the She Beast, is rather gruesome also in this foreign production and obviously portrayed by a man(late in the film you get a look at the legs and you can tell). We are then presented with a young couple newlywedding in Transylvania(of all places), who eventually are driven off the road into the lake putting to rest the female(apparently). The male then hooks up with the count -- who we find out is the famous killer of Dracula, Van Helsing, and attempts to exercise the witch out of the newly deceased bride before she kills everyone in town. Mel Welles -- from a "Little Shop of Horrors" fame -- plays a drunkard, bumbling, extremely moral-less hotel manager who gets in the midst of everything. Initially, the husband, gets rather annoyed when Helsing suggests that what's happened is this exorcism, but eventually believes it. Barbara Steele & John Karlson play the husband and wife team that are just a pawn for this inevitable semi-shockfest. The movie was supposedly an Italian/Yugoslavian production but it was obviously intended for English-speaking audiences and is somewhat light really compared to the stuff that comes out nowadays, but was probably pretty rough back then. Despite this -- the movie just doesn't pull you in, and is pretty slow midway thru so the shock doesn't really do anything. A definite miss in this genre, bypass it.
ASouthernHorrorFan A word of warning to any Wiccan or Witch, "The She Beast" is a film that adheres to the very old world Catholic view of witches. That view is the same as in the silent film classic "Haxan". That all witches were hideous she devils hidden away from society and only interested in communing with the devil and eating your children. However as a horror fan who is well aware that this is an out-dated offensive view toward anyone who practices the ancient art I love this representation of the witch as ultimate monster, frankly because it gets old seeing possible "lipstick lesbians" hanging out in coffee shops and celebrating themselves all over Nature's good grace only victimized and forced to use magic in self defense. This "offensive" alternate look at the witch is far more fun and entertaining to watch on screen. Now for my review."The She Beast" stars Barbara Steele and Ian Ogilvy as a couple of British subjects on a European honeymoon vacation arriving in Transylvania. The rest at a hotel in the cursed town that his keeper of a legend of nightmare. In the 18th century the villagers laid to rest a nasty witch after she had taken one too many of the town's children. Unfortunately for them they did not wait for the Van Helsing family to properly exorcise the wretched creature so they live in the shadow of the deed that comes back to live again once more. The film relies on minimal dialog that actually leads you into the story, only highlights of what is happening are actually held up with commentary. Most of the conversation revolves around poking fun at old world superstitions, trivial every day stuff and jabs at communism. The film is super low budget and was only shot in 21 days which shows. There is a continuous flow as the plot twists and dialog bounce from the four main characters that play a part in the witch's resurrection that seems rushed and careless. However the on screen action that unfolds in this classic B movie is fun as hell and the witch is truly a sight to see. Sadly she is not really as gruesome as one would hope, shown more like a wild animal that keeps getting loose instead of a planned revenge with system. Barbara still is classic Barbara in the film which truly is the saving grace of this little film. The sound and film quality are not all that great but for me gave that drive in B movie feel that just added to my experience of watching this one. I definitely see myself enjoying it over and over again just for the fun of it. Oh and because it is Barbara Steele. I just luv her!
