Synopsis

John H. Groberg, a middle class kid from Idaho Falls, crosses the Pacific to become a Mormon missionary in the remote and exotic Tongan island kingdom during the 1950's. He leaves behind a loving family and the true love of his life, Jean. Through letters and musings across the miles, John shares his humbling and sometimes hilarious adventures with "the girl back home", and her letters buoy up his spirits in difficult times. John must struggle to overcome language barriers, physical hardship and deep-rooted suspicion to earn the trust and love of the Tongan people he has come to serve. Throughout his adventure-filled three years on the islands, he discovers friends and wisdom in the most unlikely places. John H. Groberg's Tongan odyssey will change his life forever.

Alicia I love this movie so much

Grimossfer Clever and entertaining enough to recommend even to members of the 1%
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
desi_smile This movie is excellent because there's action and also a good story that makes you think about how you live your own live. It's based on a true story that is about a missionary who has to go to Tonga for 3years to preach the gospel.Tonga is a small Island and first he experiences a huge shock of culture. The people there have no money and live of what they can cultivate on the Island and the worst of all, he doesn't speak their language and the minister forbids the people to listen to him.A lot of miraculous things happen to him on that Island. And he has to fight for his love back home and writes her letters in which he tells her not to marry someone else. The story is about true love, faith and a boy becoming a man. It really touched my heart.
gcrandall The movie contains what seems to be an honest look at a missionary leaving his home for quite a while, not knowing what to expect, and, returning home unexpectedly different. I thought the movie was tastefully done. I didn't have a lot of preconceived notions going in, and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I thought the storyline showed some of the greatest human characteristics that can be shown, both from Elder Groberg and from those whom he served. I recommend the movie to anyone I see...and really don't understand why anyone would say it's "the worst movie ever" seeing some of the bile that's put on film each and every day.If you're looking for shoot-em-up and special effects, this is the worst movie ever. If you're looking for an inspiring story that gets you asking what's really important in life, then you may put this on your ten-best list. Happy viewing!
Tom DeFelice This film is set in the 1950's, not only in time but in style. It was a time of Poodle skirts, McCarthyism and fear of the bomb. This script acknowledges the first only. There is a simplification of the time that will appeal to some but not to most. The characters lack depth and the "feel good" problems the characters face lack tension. That said, the low-key acting services the low-key script very well.If you can identify with the characters (especially if you are Mormon). you will enjoy this film. If you cannot identify with the characters, you will probably find the film slow and very boring.
deandrake First of all I wanted to say that if you watched the movie and walked away from it without feeling emotionally moved (in a positive way) you might be emotionally dead. Even if you don't believe in the miracles that occurred in the film, you can appreciate the poignant message behind the story of a young man and his struggles to help the people he fell in love with. I sense that there are a number of "Mormon-phobics" that ended up "getting lured into" seeing this movie somehow and end up screaming "Propaganda!" It's actually quite amusing that these people are so afraid of this religion that they make such unreasonably absurd efforts to avoid anything to do with the religion or people who are members of it. The religious doctrine in this movie was portrayed in such a benign manner that it is nearly indiscernible. It's kind of like saying that "The Sound of Music" was Catholic propaganda (although some antagonists will probably feel that way anyway). This movie was deeply moving and it was one of the few movies that had the effect of permanently affecting me in a positive way. If you're looking for the usual Hollywood style of over-embellishing a story to the point of making it unbelievable, or trying to concentrate on some spectacular story line or special effects you'd probably best move on to the fiction section and leave this one alone. This is a real story about real people with real feelings - written and produced for real people.
