Synopsis

Vincke and Verstuyft are one of the best detective teams of the Antwerp police force. When they are confronted with the disappearance of a top official and the murder of two prostitutes, the trail leads to the almost retired assassin Angelo Ledda. Since Ledda starts showing symptoms of Alzheimer's, it's getting more and more difficult to complete his contracts. When he has to murder a 12-year old call-girl, he refuses and becomes a target himself. While Vincke and Verstuyft are chasing him and counting the corpses, Ledda is taking care of his employers.

Karry Best movie of this year hands down!
JinRoz For all the hype it got I was expecting a lot more!
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
AshUnow This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
rooprect If, like me, you don't know what country "Flemish cinema" refers to, then read on. Yeah, I'm one of those dimwits like Joey on Friends when they tell him Dutch people live in the Netherlands, and he says "no, that's where Peter Pan came from." Suffice it to say this was the first Belgian film I've ever seen, and I was really impressed. It's stylish, polished, has a lush musical score, and features a lot of actors who seem really human. Even the minor roles were well played.I'm not usually a fan of crime thrillers, but this one drew me in with its interesting premise: a hero who's losing his memory. In that respect, reminded me of the excellent Tom Tykwer film "Winter Sleepers" (1997), except this film is driven by a faster, more action-oriented plot and pace. There's a lot going on here. Just when you think it's over, a new drama comes into the mix, making it unpredictable until the end. The director effectively used a lot of suspense tricks which will make you say "aha, you got me!" For example (though this was not used in this movie), a cat might jump out at the perfect moment to give your heart a little leap. In hindsight it's silly, but you can't deny it works. So bear in mind, this is definitely a movie for people who enjoy being taken for a ride. In the same vein, I think the director intentionally uses some standard clichés, almost in a playful way. If you approach this movie with the idea of having a fun time, you won't be disappointed.Final note: I think it helps to be a little familiar with Belgian culture, which I'm not. I could tell the characters switch languages between different variations of Dutch/Flemish, French, and snippets of English, and I think that's significant. Some of the settings are breathtaking, and I found myself saying "wow, that place is cool! I wonder where that is". In all, this is a film that Belgium can be very proud of, and I hope to see more like it in the future.
whpratt1 Enjoyed viewing this Belgium Film concerning a murder mystery involving a very high government official. Eric Vincke, (Koen DeBouw) and Freddy Verstuyft, (Werner DeSmedt) are both of Belgium's best detectives who are assigned to this case which involves many dark dirty facts that eventually become revealed. There is a very young girl about 12 or 13 who escapes being killed and then a hit man appears named Angelo Ledda,(Jan Decleir) who has Alzheimer's and is assigned to kill this young girl. There is one sex scene with a Belgium Prostitute which adds some so called romance to the film. Despite the hit man having Alzheimer's, he is deadly with a weapon and hand to hand combat for an older man. Enjoy, it was very entertaining.
Robert J. Maxwell Angelo Ledda, an aging hit man, is assigned the task of killing a twelve-year-old girl and finally balks, putting the gang and its aristocrat capo on his trail, as well as Antwerp's finest detectives. Ledda is developing Alzheimer's and this complicates matters, but in the end he gets his just desserts and deliberately leaves behind evidence that leads the police to the Baron who heads the criminals. This is a set up for a Hollywood remake. Hollywood seems to have completely run out of ideas of its own and is now stumbling along on fumes and copies -- "The Departed," "Insomnia," and who knows what all else.It taps into many veins of American interest. Plenty of violence. A nice role for an aging (but not elderly) star on the order of Dustin Hoffman or Jack Nicholson. Lots of opportunities for razzle-dazzle directorial exploits -- negative flashbacks, fast cutting -- because of the onset of an unsettling neurological disease. And then there's Alzheimer's itself, the bugaboo of every aging yuppie who has forgotten an old phone number of the name of an old love. This film isn't especially ambitious. It's a crime thriller and does not beg for sympathy. The hit man has a face that seems to have been modeled out of play-do by a five year old. It does what it sets out to do, and it does it with style and dash. There's a particularly ominous moment when Ledda is sitting in a car holding two honest detectives hostage. The car is surrounded by Antwerp police armed with rifles and laser beams. The dark interior of the BMW seems to be filled with little pink dots that drift across the faces of the guilty and the innocent alike. That scene is a sure target for imitation in the remake.
FredoMovieLover The Alzheimer case, or de zaak alzheimer in Dutch, is a movie that has surprised both friend and foe. Eight years of hard work done by the witty and seemingly all-knowing Eric Van Looy have resulted in a movie beyond the scope of its country. The story contains intrigue, humor, love, deception, emotion,... everything a quality movie should have. Jan Decleir, playing Angelo Ledda is one of the most talented actors this world will ever see, too bad he was born in Belgium, but his talented is uncontested, as he was part of the Oscar-winning "Karakter", the beautiful, Oscar-nominated "Daens" and many other moving motion pictures. The entire cast is made up of the crème de la crème of Belgian actors, the direction is incredible, the action is great,... If you haven't seen this movie yet; make sure you see it quickly. If you have already seen it; watch it again!fredo
