Taraparain Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
Abbigail Bush what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Kamila Bell This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Rainey Dawn If this film is anything it is an Arthur Askey showpiece. 90% of this film belongs to Askey and his style of comedy. That is not necessarily a bad thing but he really distracts from the reason most of us are watching the film to being with - A Ghost Train. At the time this was filmed the audiences may have gone to watch this for Askey's comedy but I think today most of us are watching this for a comedy-horror/thriller and not so much for Askey. It's a mildly entertaining film from the start but really the only part to watch roughly the last 25 minutes - then you'll actually get to The Ghost Train part of the show. As stated earlier, the rest of the film is the comedy of Askey.4/10
ingemar-4 Some comedians work a lot on running gags, which means that you must understand the gag before it gets funny. I believe Arthur Askey is playing such strings here. I never heard about him before (I guess he was mostly forgotten when I was born), and found him less than amusing during much of the movie, but I thought the same of other comedians that I came to love. That said, I can't imagine ever rating his humor as highly as e.g. the Marx brothers. Actually, I thought that some of his gags would have been funnier if he had remained silent - like Harpo, or like old silent movies. As I see it, he is more fooling around than doing well thought out and well timed gags. But he is amusing at times, and he looks funny. But to the story, he is spice, not substance. Well, maybe a little. He makes the abandoned station feel smaller than it is, by annoying the other people. And his obnoxious ways did make the train late which put them in the station in the first place. The story felt rather stupid until the plot was unrolled. Maybe not the most original plot ever, but it was pretty well packaged and made perfect sense. Not a top movie, rather a simple low budget B movie aimed at Askey fans. I ended up finding it worth watching.
jameslms1 Late one night, many years ago, I came across this movie, and although it is filled with holes (see other reviews), it was still very enjoyable. I managed to record it, unfortunately the old VHS is well and truly gone and I would dearly love to obtain a copy on DVD region 4 (Australia). Alas, to no avail. You see, it is one of those films you want to go back to time and time again. This film was made when Britain had its back to the wall, and the British film industry wanted to both entertain and educate her people of the various dangers surrounding them. It is a warm and corny trip back into a time long gone. Having said that, if you ever get the opportunity to watch this film, do yourself a favor, sit back with a glass of your favorite beverage, kick off your shoes and watch a cheesy old WW2 propaganda film that is still entertaining, and will bring a gentle smile to your face.
MartinHafer Above is a quote from this film and it very aptly sums up this film! The comment is made to Arthur Askey's character and I wanted to see him either be quiet or die in this film--either would have made me ecstatic. His character, to put it very bluntly, was the most annoying person I've seen in a film for perhaps the last year--and I watch A LOT of movies!! The film begins aboard a British train during WWII. The train's progress is halted by a selfish and sub-human jerk (Askey) who pulls the emergency stop cord because his hat fell out the window. While this is clearly a criminal offense, he is indifferent to the anger of the crew and runs about annoying people repeatedly--in particular a huge cricket player who wanted to kill Askey (oh, why, why DIDN'T he?!). Later, when a group of travelers gets to their stop, they find they are stranded and they missed the connecting train--thanks to Askey's stunt. And, Askey isn't the least bit repentant or sorry and continues to make a total nuisance of himself. I really, really, really wanted him to just shut up, as this boorish character would not let up for a second--pushing the rest of the group (as well as the audience) past all human endurance. By this point in the film, I was so fed up with him I really could not enjoy the movie and mentally turned it off...though I did continue watching. Sure, there was a plot about a ghost train that began almost half-way into the film, but I honestly didn't care at all any more and just wanted it to end.I understand that Askey was a bit of an institution in the UK (on stage, TV and in movies)--and was apparently quite beloved. Well, as an American I am not familiar with him and perhaps he was a great comedian after all. However, he is simply a grating comedian in "The Ghost Train". He was bold and cheeky like Groucho Marx but without charm or humor. While the rest of the actors tried, they simply couldn't get noticed because Askey behaved like a spoiled and obnoxious child who insists on entertaining his parents' party guests. Don't this film unless you as a masochist.
