GurlyIamBeach Instant Favorite.
ChanFamous I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Deanna There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
Uriah43 "Billy Jack" (Tom Laughlin) is a former soldier who served with the Green Berets in Vietnam and has come back home to California to start a new life. Perhaps because of his Native American heritage he chooses to live in the woods away from everybody else. Unfortunately, things change when he gets into a fight with some members of a motorcycle gang known as "the Born Losers" and this changes things rather drastically for him. Similarly, "Vicky Barrington" (Elizabeth James) is on her way to meet her father when she also runs into this same motorcycle gang after which both she and Billy Jack realize that their lives are about to become closely intertwined. Now rather than reveal any more of this movie I will just say that this was an enjoyable "biker film" which resulted in at least 3 "Billy Jack" sequels. Of particular interest is the fact that, regardless of his fighting prowess, he doesn't get off scot-free in many of his brawls and suffers consequences as a result. In any case, I enjoyed this movie for the most part and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly above average.
spaz47 I saw this film with friends and family in the theater when it 1st came out. My friend loved the soundtrack so much he bought the album. Elizabeth James, aka "Vicky," was a real "hottie." She was smooching all over Billy Jack at the end of the film. We were originally informed that Billy was an "ex-Green Beret." Now before I go any further I just want to say that I still like the film but in a different way than before. Fast Forward to the 2nd film, "Billy Jack." Both California and Vicky have disappeared without an explanation. However Billy's new love interest seems to be his real life wife Delores Taylor, who stays on in the next 2 movies as well. (Hmmm...) We still enjoyed watching Billy kick Mr. Posner in the head though. (Continued in the Billy Jack section)
mikaldhuber This film is something that Tarentino ought to remake, not updated but a simulacrum of the original. Make a nice follow-up to DEATH PROOF. (Where is Tom McLaughlin now?) The "martial arts" in this flick are pretty feeble, consisting of a few judo chops--the action on BILLY JACK was much more intense. That Billy ends up shooting the gang leader between the eyes (he DID warn him, though) is so anti-heroic that it rather spoils the film in some ways. Some of the camera work in BORN LOSERS borders on amateurish, the FAR side of amateurish that is. The sound quality is at times atrocious, and the Beachhouse/clubhouse is absurd- I've hung out with bikers, and believe me that place was ridiculously clean--the hardwood floors actually shine! The Deputy (who pokes Danny in the gut) seems like he SHOULD have been more heroic, but like all of the lesser roles he is completely undeveloped.Note that Elizabeth James has a co-writing credit on this! But for all of that, it still ranks among my favorite biker films.I find it patently absurd to see the subcategories listed as NIPPLE, PUBIC HAIR, NUDITY and so on, since there is very little actual nudity.BTW: I had a bit part (hippie kid #4) in BILLY JACK since they filmed parts of it at the new Buffalo Free School where I was in attendance. To anyone who keeps an eye open, you might also see that the swimming hole (where Jean was raped) is the very same pool as in EASY RIDER. I think I received about $140 for my three days on set.
wes-connors I saw "Billy Jack" (the next film) first and believe it is the better Jack. There are many situations/elements in "Born Losers" which are more accessible in the later films. This "Born Losers" is mildly entertaining, I think, if you are more familiar with the character and situations Tom Laughlin creates. I don't think I would have been as interested if I didn't know Jack. So, I think a more involved Billy would have helped THIS movie - I kept waiting for Laughlin to perform, even if it's just to TALK more about his (Jack's) philosophies on life. The other interest is Jane Russell, in a supporting role. Her total film career reveals a versatility. Too bad movie makers didn't offer her more choice roles. **** The Born Losers (1967) Tom Laughlin ~ Tom Laughlin, Elizabeth James, Jane Russell
