BeaglesGuy This is one of the most important movies of this century so far. It should be required watching, just as many books are required reading, in educational institutions. One can not truly understand the meaning of freedom without understanding the cost of freedom.
Ken I was unaware of this movie until the end of 2016 when it appeared on Amazon Prime Video. Kevin Bacon being a great actor, and having done very good movies, I figured let's give it a go. I wasn't sure what to expect regarding the movie plot. I also did not realize it is based on true events. It was very moving, and very eye opening in regards to the respect and tribute given to a fallen soldier. I highly recommend a viewing but will forewarn that it is a sad movie. Nonetheless, it is also sort of inspirational knowing that a fallen soldier is not just passed off with a courtesy call notifying the closet kin. It is the least our government and militia should provide when a tragedy of war does occur.
SnoopyStyle It's 2004 as casualties in Iraq climb. Marine Lt. Col. Mike Strobl (Kevin Bacon) is a Desert Storm veteran and hasn't been back to Iraq since. He wonders if his administrative job is worthy as he lives comfortably in the States with his family. He decides to escort the body of 19 year old PFC Chance Phelps back home to Clifton, Colorado which is also his hometown. There is a power to this movie. It doesn't have much drama. There is a very small reveal but that's not its big strength. It's the powerful scenes of respect coming from the people that Strobl encounters. The act of showing returning casualties amounted to an anti-war statement for some people. This is able to show the compelling human respect without taking sides in the war.
guchman101 I'm not sure the people who give low ratings to this movie know what the point is. They describe it as overzealous patriotism and military propaganda and all of that. They talk about it in terms of the fact that they think our actions in Iraq are immoral. This movie isn't about any of that at all. It's not meant to be a propaganda film or a movie about any war in particular. It seems like the low ratings are from people who disagree with the politics of the right wing parties in the United States. Either that or from people who didn't seem to understand the purpose of this movie. The acting isn't supposed to be of the Gone with the Wind variety because the whole point is that it's a tribute to everybody that serves and has served our country, whether they're alive or dead. It's supposed to be emotional and very simple. There's no action because it's not an action movie. There's a plot, it's just too simple for a lot of people to treat as a plot. The plot is the process of a Marine who dies going home to be buried. Regardless of what people think about the politics of wars and the political leadership of our country, the people who serve our country in the military etc. deserve respect. This movie gives them that respect and does a superb job.Despite the bad reviews, I think a great many people appreciate those who serve in the military and appreciate when someone sacrifices their life for this country. The people who hate this movie have every right to. I just think they're projecting their political views onto a movie that isn't about politics. I disagree with a lot of what our political leadership does but that has nothing to do with anything in this movie. The people who serve in the military deserve this tribute to them.
