Linkshoch Wonderful Movie
Claysaba Excellent, Without a doubt!!
TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
Bluebell Alcock Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies
peefyn Much of Don Hertzfield's work embodies the term "experimental". Even though this is one of his first major works, it's already experimenting with the limits of hand drawn animation (on paper), and exploring boundaries of the format. He is probably not the first animator to use the crumpling of the paper and tearing as a part of the animation, or even letting it affect the characters within - but the way he does it is as fun as it is creative. The plot of the cartoon works alright as a gimmick. It's almost like a series of skits, where the punchline usually is a non sequitur - some times something very gross. The contrast between the the cute drawings and the things they say and do was more fresh when this was released than it is now - though it is probably still very enjoyable for many. His style is that of a notebook doodle, and it lends itself great for experimentation, as he can probably do more stuff on the fly. In interviews he has stated that he usually does not storyboard before he starts animating, which makes sense after watching shorts like this. This short is not just good on its own, but it's also great to compare to his later works, as you can see how his style develops, without and how his works explore deeper subjects than "just" the format itself.
princebansal1982 Some other reviewer remarked that - You'll either love it or hate it. Well, I hated it. It is not that I don't like violence or gore or plain idiotic stuff. I like South Park and I love horror comedies. But everything should be in a context. There is no context here. Just random stuff. While watching this movie I felt as if somebody was playing a joke on my expense. I guess the Don Hertzfeldt was.The premise is that these shorts were commissioned by a channel and were rejected. And then they show these meaningless and horrible segments which go on and on. I would have rejected them too. Even at nine minutes it was made to test endurance levels.I suspected it was bad from the start when the introductory text was jiggling. It was hard to read and very pretentious. And things just went downhill from that. These kind of juvenile techniques are used especially by those filmmaker who don't have anything to tell. The voice acting was also atrocious which really complemented the quality of movie.By the way, I have to grudgingly admit that the last 45 seconds or so were good and innovative. But the rest of the video had already spoiled my mood.
Imdbidia An Oscar nominated, cult short by Don Hertzfeldt that showcases several mini-shorts related to product promotion and children teaching segments. They are linked by a fictional frame that says that these works were presented and rejected and that the author grew increasingly crazy, the next short becoming even crazier. It is just a summary you see repeated in too many film sites taken literally. Hertzfeldt has never accepted any commercial assignment. The animation style is very simple and schematic, with simple lines, blank and white, bare or very simple backgrounds, with some splashes of bright colour. The mood of all the vignettes is very childish, funny and increasingly gory, with that sort of brutishness that some small children show when mistreating little animals without knowing that what they are doing is wrong or harmful. The humour goes from deadpan, to absurd to plain hilarious, and it is very entertaining. "My anus is bleeding" and "funny hats only" are my favourite segments.Something different and refreshing. Anarchist in the best sense of the word. Not for children!
hippofairy i loved this short from the first time i saw it in the theater back home in Hawaii. they were showing it before some Australian flick at the Hawaii International Film Festival. I went to see it with my boyfriend at the time, and we seemed to be 2 of the 3 people laughing in the theater. i was laughing so hard i almost fell off my seat, but controlled myself enough to stay upright and watch the whole thing. i'm not quite sure what was wrong with the rest of the crowd (i guess they wanted to see the Aussie movie). and maybe the humor is just a little too "different" for them. but, i'm glad the rest of the world appreciates REJECTED as much as i do. i watch the DVD at home and laugh out loud every time.
