BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
GazerRise Fantastic!
Tayloriona Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Loui Blair It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
bighebeal Unbelievable. Witless, coarse, crude, offensive, horrendously directed... This was produced by Samuel Goldwyn Jr. His father had been one of the two 'classiest' producers in old Hollywood; he not only made many superb dramas -- "prestige pictures", they used to call the type of dramas he'd make -- he also made excellent comedies, and he'd hired the very best writers and directors (Billy Wilder, George S. Kaufman, Howard Hawks. etc.) to make them. He must have turned over in his grave to see his name connected with this garbage. The director has zero idea of how to make a scene 'cook', to develop chemistry between his actors, to bring out whatever humor there might be in a situation... nothing. He seems to have spent most of his career grinding out sitcom episodes -- second-rate ones, at that -- which is a very different thing than doing what Hawks or Wilder or McCarey did. The climactic chase is embarrassing even by boneheaded-'80's-comedy standards. This seems to be his only feature-directing credit, and you can see why.Re the cast, Jim Carrey does the best he can, but he is obviously hamstrung by a director who told him to just do the script as written, like television -- and the script as written was just awful. Cleavon Little is wasted. The only saving grace is Lauren Hutton, who is sexy as hell and seems to be having a good time despite everything. It's also fun as a time capsule of its era -- the clothes, the music, etc. But outside of that and Lauren Hutton, it's an utter stinkeroo.
jokeman099 at the beginning of the movie, the "degenerates from downstairs" mention that the only virgin they can find is an ll year old boy. the countess immediately grimaces and says, "don't be gross."also, the dance fight scene doesn't take place at a halloween dance. it takes place at a PRE HALLOWEEN BOP. there are signs all over the movie proclaiming it as PRE halloween. during the actual scene, there's a huge sign on stage announcing that all the students are at a PRE halloween bop. you may have missed it.my biggest complaint was the use of fire to hold off the vampires. if the vampires are so deathly afraid of fire, why would they light so many candles and torches all around them? :)
Vomitron_G So, Jim Carrey managed to build out a career after this flick? Wonderful. Okay, ONCE BITTEN isn't really a bad film. It's just a silly comedy. Jim Carrey plays Mark Kendall, a teenage virgin dude, full-time nerd and not all that smooth with the ladies. That is, until he meets Countess Lauren Hutton, who is in desperate need for some virgin blood to rejuvenate. Kendall gets seduced and bitten, starts acting weird, appears to become a bit more cooler and gets his potential love-interest to be more interested in him. But Countess needs to bite the virgin Kendall three more times to succeed in her evil scheme. Will she? The rest of the film, Kendall gets toyed around between his girlfriend and the Countess, which results in an actual highlight being a three-way dance on a party with both his girlfriend and the Countess trying to win him over. You can already derive from the way Jim Carrey acts in this film, that his legendary Ace Ventura character was already in him, at the time he made ONCE BITTEN.Good Badness? No, it's not bad enough. 5/10 and 5/10
Pepper Anne Exploiting the typical male teen's desperate attempt to lose his virginity, 'Once Bitten' is a light comedy from the teen horror comedy catalog of the 1980s, though not as funny as say, 'My Best Friend is a Vampire,' nor as satirical as 'My Boyfriend's Back' (a 90s comedy). In part, the comedy is never too adventurous with comedic quips, and instead, carries with it for some parts in the movie, a rather unnecessarily serious mood.Lauren Hutton plays the sleek, voluptuous Countess, a vampire desperate for virgin blood in order to sustain her youth. Lucky for her, she is conveniently on the prowl at a Hollywood night club the same time that high school teen Mark Kendall (Jim Carrey) and his two buddies arrive for a guys night out. Mark might think he's about to lose his virginity, but instead, finds himself in a whole lot of trouble once he falls into the seductive clutches of the Countess. He displays all the symptoms of a vampire: irritability, pale complexion, a sudden lust for rare meat, and a newfound love for all-black attire. But, his "first time" with the Countess will by no means his last as she follows him around town and haunts his dreams (I guess, they're really light male teen eroticism) as she intends to complete whatever vampire ritual will sustain her youth permanently. It's a nice comedy, worth of a lazy noon viewing, and particularly for fans of the cult horror comedy. But, as far as vampires and desperate teen virgins go, I would highly recommend 'My Best Friend is a Vampire.'
