Smartorhypo Highly Overrated But Still Good
Salubfoto It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
Siflutter It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
big-gun Night of the Demon (not to be confused with Night of the Demons from 1987) is one of those movies you either enjoy or despise. It's pretty typical of the multiple murders in the woods type movie the 80's had many of. There are no Oscar caliber performances here, though I'm sure the title alone will tell you that. Professor Nugent and several of his students set out into the woods in pursuit of a legendary creature said to prowl the area. Enter Bigfoot, some strange townspeople, some of whom worship the Bigfoot creature, and one hermit lady who had been raped years earlier by the creature. The whole story is told by the professor who, as it turns out, is the only survivor of Bigfoot's wrath besides Wanda the hermit lady. The doctors and the cops listen to his story and ultimately decide he's crazy. If you happen to be an aficionado of the 80's horror genre, you could do better than this, but you also do worse.
Leofwine_draca Usually I'm a sucker for early '80s horror films which take place in the woods. THE FOREST, THE PREY, THE WARNING, I love all of them in their cheap and cheerful glory. NIGHT OF THE DEMON is another such movie, yet despite gobbets of bloody gore and gristle, the resulting story is so ineptly played out that only the most ardent horror-lovers will find themselves having a good time. Amusingly consigned to the "video nasties" list due to the graphic nature of the special effects and thereafter sought by rabid horror veterans hungry for bloodshed, NIGHT OF THE DEMON is a disappointing exercise in fear whichever way you look at it. The confused narrative is partly at fault. Packed with flashbacks every five minutes and jumping about all over the place, the non-linear style makes for tough viewing.Every couple of minutes there are shots of trees and countryside, used to pad out the footage and add a little scene-setting to the movie. Over the action we get ultra-cheap music that sounds like it should belong to THE CLANGERS rather than a fully-fledged horror movie. James Watson's direction is flawed and hopeless and the editing also poor. The script is moronic, filled with ultra-cheesy dialogue, and the hilariously straight-faced performances from the cast are also remarkably poor. The monster itself is little more than a big guy with a mask and bits of a fur rug covering his body and his "red vision" stalking shots would look better in a science fiction film rather than a horror outing.Which leaves only the aforementioned special effects for the viewer to enjoy. Despite their diabolical cheapness, the gore shots are definitely in-your-face and go out of their way to be gruesome. My favourite is the opening murder of the fisherman, whose arm is torn from its socket by the hairy horror and proceeds to spurt blood, a scene over which the credits play out. This is just about the best-filmed shot of the entire movie and promises artistry that doesn't follow. The catalogue of murders consists of a young motorcyclist getting castrated, a guy in his sleeping bag getting impaled on a branch, a pair of girl scouts getting hacked to death (in rather bad taste, it has to be said), and a young Romeo getting bloodied on the roof of his van (leading to the worst display of mugging that I have ever seen from the girl playing his lover). However, the most outrageous scenes are left for the slow-motion climax, in which one young teenager has his entrails torn out. If this wasn't enough, the Bigfoot then proceeds to whip his colleagues with the aforementioned intestinal tract! Another guy has his face burnt off on a cooker and still others are impaled on pitchforks and sadistically slashed with broken glass. More of a film to laugh at than actually be scared by, NIGHT OF THE DEMON is a cheesy and badly-made nightmare of a movie.
Michael_Elliott Night of the Demon (1980)** 1/2 (out of 4) I'm not going to lie and try to pass this thing off as some sort of masterpiece but it's certainly one of the all-time campy horror movies. Professor Dixon (Michael Cutt), an expert at all things Bigfoot, takes five students to the woods to investigate some murders and soon enough they run into a bizarre redneck woman and of course Bigfoot eventually shows up. If you're looking for a well-made, brilliantly acted, heartfelt film that makes you think when it's over then NIGHT OF THE DEMON certainly isn't for you. If you're just looking for some gory, campy fun then this movie has pretty much everything you'd want plus much more. I'm a sucker for Bigfoot movies and this here is certainly one of the most memorable simply because of how silly it is and because of the fact that it has to be the goriest one ever made. I was really shocked at how much violence and gore was in this thing. We've got people being stabbed, hit with an axe, burned, raped, slammed, clawed and much worse and all of it comes with plenty of red stuff. There are some outrageous death scenes and while all of them are done with low-budget effects I still thought they worked quite well. And just wait until you see what happens to the motorcycle guy who pulls off to use the bathroom. The performances range from fair to poor and there's no question that there are a lot of quality issues. Just check out the error of the "witness" telling the story but when you see what happens to him at the end it doesn't match up with his injuries when he's telling the story. The screenplay really goes off the deep end once we start to get involved with the redneck girl but you have to give the director credit by throwing whatever into the mix and just seeing what happened. NIGHT OF THE DEMON is pure trash but it's oh so much fun.
Kristine A few years ago my mother had bought me a DVD called Night of the Demon out of the 5 dollar bin, she knew my love of horror films and thought that the cover looked cool and that I would probably like it. Weird thing is, I never checked it out until recently, years and years this DVD sat on my shelf and I don't know why I didn't check it out earlier. Because when I went onto IMDb for reviews and then onto Amazon, I couldn't believe my eyes, this same DVD that my mom bought for 5 dollars is now selling for 80 dollars on Amazon, isn't that crazy? So my mother picked a true treasure I was guessing. Well, after viewing it, I'm not so sure that treasure is the right name any more, but it certainly has something. I'm an gore fan, I have to admit, the story could be lousy but if there is good gore in the film, I just end up falling for it. Night of the Demon does that for me, while the story, acting and directing isn't up to par, this is a fun movie with the killing scenes. I know that sounds sick, but this is a fun treasure from the 80's with the great senseless nudity, sex, drugs, drinking, stereotypes and violence that I could want.Night of the Demon tells the story of an anthropology class's all-too-successful expedition into the American wilderness to find the truth behind the Sasquatch legend. Along the way, the team learn about the creature's previous victims, uncover the squalid story of a hermit who gave birth to a mutation after being raped by the monster, and finally come face to face with the beast himself.Eighty dollars worth of your time; no, not really, but if you're able to still find it cheap and are a horror fan like I am, I totally recommend this film. This is a crazy monster we have in the film, we go from this light hearted music that sounds like it belongs in an elevator to seeing Big Foot rip a guys hot dog off! You know what I mean, I can't write it on this website. Also this poor girl is getting beaten by her hick father after he suspects her feelings for another man, literally thrashing a belt on her back, now in most horror movies, the dad would be the one put to justice, but it's the girl that gets raped by Big Foot and gives birth to his baby! Now that's a Jerry Springer episode that I would love to see! The whole ending is in slow motion with the sickest kills you will ever see, Saw would cover it's eyes to some of these gruesome kills. It's a very strange film, believe me, it's not for everyone. The direction is a little off and the lighting is absolutely horrible at times, however the reason I forgave this so fast is due to the fact that it seems like the cast and crew genuinely had a great time making this film. I mean there's a scene where Big Foot takes two girl scouts who happen to be carrying knives and pulls their arms towards each other stabbing each other while the whole time you're screaming "Just drop the knife! Problem solved!". But it's moments like that that make me enjoy a movie when you're just having a good time with it. This may be a twisted Big Foot, but that's just the way we are supposed to suspect him to be, why are we so afraid of him? Just like Jaws made people afraid of sharks, Night of the Demon will make you afraid of Big Foot! But like I said, don't buy it for 80 dollars, I'm sure you can find it cheaper somewhere else or it's gotta be on the net, because people are greedy and crazy.6/10
