Noutions Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
Breakinger A Brilliant Conflict
Jenna Walter The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
Scott LeBrun Here's something to check out if you're sick of blander, more traditional Yuletide season fare. Scott MacDonald ("Fire in the Sky", "Jarhead") plays the title character, a prolific serial killer who finally gets caught, and tried. He's on his way to his execution when a traffic accident causes him to be doused with a cutting edge chemical. Then, when he lands in the snow, it allows him to be reborn as a killer snowman. A killer snowman with a horrible one-liner for just about any occasion. In his new incarnation, Jack slaughters the unlucky people of the town of Snomonton, with a bumbling sheriff (Chris Allport, "Dead & Buried", "To Live and Die in L.A.") as his nemesis.Written and directed by Michael Cooney, this is the kind of self-conscious cheese that cheerfully lets you know early on that you are NOT supposed to take it seriously. Cooney and company are clearly having quite a bit of fun with their patently ridiculous premise (which got recycled for a family audience a year later with the same named Michael Keaton vehicle). It's amusing to see blow dryers utilized as weapons against Jack, and what the ultimate means of slaying the beast turns out to be, but the biggest laugh of all comes from seeing snowman-Jack behind the wheel of a car. If your tastes are extremely twisted, you may be amused to witness the fate of a pre-"American Pie" Shannon Elizabeth (in her second feature credit). Once Jack is reincarnated as the snowman, his dialogue starts to consist almost exclusively of those howlingly lame quips. "Gosh, I only axed you for a smoke!" The special effects are primitive, and there's not a ton of gore, but comedy and horror fans will likely still be quite entertained by the killings. Some of the cast plays it appropriately straight; the late, handsome character actor Allport keeps his poker face on throughout. Stephen Mendel ("Scanner Cop II", 'Night Heat'), F. William Parker ("Revenge of the Nerds", "Lost Highway"), Rob LaBelle ('First Wave', "Watchmen"), and Kelly Jean Peters ("Little Big Man", "Pocket Money") are among the co-stars.Overall, this is good fun for people ready to embrace some utter silliness when it comes to their entertainment. It's paced pretty well, and leads to a reasonably rousing finale.Followed by a sequel.Seven out of 10.
Stevieboy666 Incredibly silly but very funny slasher movie about a killer snowman. What's not to like? The kills come thick and fast, and they are all very inventive. Jack Frost (that's the killer's real name before he mutates into a snowman!) comes out with some great one liners. Apparently Shannon Elizabeth made her film debut here. Highly recommended as an alternative Xmas movie. Sadly the sequel was an absolute waste of time.
Woodyanders Vicious serial killer Jack Frost (robustly played with eye-rolling gusto by Scott McDonald) gets transformed into a lethal and seemingly unstoppable mutant snowman who terrorizes the sleepy small town of Snomonton. It's up to earnest sheriff Sam (a solid and likable performance by Christopher Allport) to stop Frost before it's too late.Writer/director Michael Cooney wisely doesn't take the gloriously ludicrous premise seriously for a minute, does a nice job of capturing a merry and vibrant Christmas atmosphere, maintains an engaging tongue-in-cheek tone throughout, comes up with plenty of choice cheesy one-liners for Frost to quip, and pulls out the sidesplitting stops for several uproariously absurd murder set pieces. Moreover, it's acted with zest by an enthusiastic cast, with especially lively contributions from Stephen Mendel as pesky fed Agent Manners, Rob LaBelle as nerdy scientist Stone, F. William Parker as amiable hardware store owner Paul Davrow, and Marsha Clark as feisty deputy Marla. The yummy Shannon Elizabeth has a memorably sexy role as luscious teenager Jill Metzner, who in the movie's single greatest and most gut-busting scene gets simultaneously raped and killed by Frost in a bathtub (!). Dean Lent's bright cinematography provides a neat colorful look. A real kitschy hoot.
GL84 After getting killed in a freak accident, the sheriff of a small- town community finds the series of strange deaths to be the work of a reanimated serial killer able to transform into the shape of a killer snowman and sets out to stop his rampage before it includes his family. This here was quite the fun and enjoyable cheesy slasher effort. One of the better features here is the fact that this one really plays well with those cheesy antics which are spread throughout here, giving this a lot to like. The opening accident starts this off with that kind of silly nature as the idea that this one goes for in setting up the killers' motivation to return which as an idea is just so goofy that the film manages to hold onto its intense tone quite well here even after asking us to buy this moment. Likewise, there's a lot to like here with the cheesy nature of dealing with the different citizens of the town and getting to utilize the cheesiness of the fact along the way. Though obviously cheesy, these stalking scenes are quite a bit of fun here where there's the first big sequence that the family's house where he gets both parents in great individual scenes which not only feature the suspenseful stalking, the really creative deaths and plenty of cheesy attitudes here while also putting on some great fun here wit the start of the ultra-cheesy one-liners he spits out. This culmination of antics is carried out throughout here in other great stalking scenes against the town, from the roadside encounter of him clearing out the leftover members in the sheriff's house including a nice exploitation element found in the attack on the daughter as well as the fine battle at the end where they confront him in the police station and leads through the church next door in the basement where the try several incredibly chilling stalking scenes trying to get him into their trap which is a solid action scene along with the rather cheesy antics along throughout. This full-on cheese, along with the rather unique kills including the method for defeating the killer is what makes this one so much fun. Along with the fine effects work for the main snowman featured throughout here, this one here really didn't have that many flaws. All of the flaws from this one come from its cheesiness and the fact that it could be taken as something that can turn off some out there. It's got an incredibly high level of cheese, with all the mentioned features turning up in really high amounts and giving this one a total that will turn off some. There's also the possibility that there are cheese-lovers who might find this one too much due to how high it is, and that's something that can make a viewing like this incredibly unpleasant to get through or even finish, and it's really the only thing wrong as the problems all stem from it.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Brief Nudity and a Rape scene.
