CinemaClown The fourth instalment in the American Pie series may feel like an unnecessary addition after American Wedding concluded the saga of Jim & his friends on such a satisfactory note but American Reunion turns out to be a very pleasant surprise for it packs in a massive dose of nostalgia and manages to work solely on the basis of that particular element.Set 13 years after the events that transpired in American Pie, the story of American Reunion finds the original gang returning to the place where it all started as they gather together for one weekend for their high-school reunion. With over a decade behind them, everyone tries to find out what the other has been up to all these years but as always, things soon head in the unexpected zone.Written & directed by John Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg, this movie shouldn't even work considering that it neither adds anything new to the saga nor features any memorable gags which were offered by the last three chapters in heavy doses. It echoes a much relaxed feel when compared to its predecessors, an extra dash of sweetness in the returning characters and the nostalgic factor is in top gear mode here. While there are plenty of shout-outs to numerous past memories, the present life of these characters carries a funny vibe of its own. Stifler is still a crackerjack, Jim's dad is still the best, the humour may not be as crude & excessive as before but it still offers good laughs, the plot nonetheless feels a tad too long at 113 minutes, the heartwarming charm is still in tact, and the entire cast performs sufficiently in their given roles. On an overall scale, American Reunion is a flip back through the old pages that revives the wonderful memories of the past and leaves its mark in the form of a pleasant smile. Its plot is forgettable, the writers fail to come up with any outrageous moment of comedy that can match the ones present in its predecessors, but by riding on the strength of nostalgia and offering many welcome nods to the original, American Reunion will succeed in entertaining its targeted audience.
Python Hyena American Reunion (2012): Dir: Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg / Cast: Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Seann William Scott, Ali Cobrin: Dirty teen comedy franchise has ran its course with a reunion that seems to celebrate and reflect the crude level of humour. I enjoyed American Pie in its inventive take on familiar grounds. It was a film many teenagers can relate to, and even its crude humour had an element of surprise given the unique nature. Here we are thirteen years after the original, and while the entire cast return, it seems devoid of any new material outside from the usual level that streaked the two previous sequels. While screenplay and themes are pretty much as bare as Jim's naked ass, it does make a decent attempt to develop some of the characters. Jason Biggs returns as Jim, whose father is widowed and his sex life is devoid. Now he is faced with a possible fling with the girl next door whom he use to babysit. Chris Klein is dating a supermodel but struggles to live down being voted off a dance off, as well as his love for Heather. Seann William Scott as Stifler hasn't changed and will cling to immaturity until his vulgar charm wins you over. Many of the female roles are unwritten, especially Alyson Hannigan whose band camp girl grew up to marry Jim and have a bad sex life. Ali Cobrin plays Jim's neighbour whom he babysat when she was young. Now at eighteen they hook up and she soon bares all. I loved these characters in the original film but now the material has gone stale. While not quite as bad as previous sequels, the best reunion for viewers would be to reacquaint with the original film. Score: 3 ½ / 10
bowmanblue Like many, I loved the first American Pie film. It was daft, silly, immature and totally funny. Its two sequels did their best to stay true to the original and, in my opinion, did a decent job.Now comes the reunion. Set just over ten years after the guys graduated high school. The first thing I have to say is that it is great to see them all together again. They still have the endearing chemistry which made the previous films such a success (and on a side note, they barely seem to have aged a bit - for that I can only hate them). However, for all the nostalgic enjoyment I got from seeing the whole gang together again, I felt this one was the most strained. In short: I didn't laugh as much as any of the previous entries in the franchise. Not saying that it wasn't funny - I laughed more times than with most comedy films. Plus it was hardly an Adam Sadler movie, it just didn't have as many laugh out loud moments as I'm used to with a 'Pie' flick.I didn't feel like I'd wasted my time, but it is nearly two hours and the jokes were starting to come few and far between. Instead, they were replaced with predictable sentiment which, although sweet, just wasn't much of a substitute for gross-out humour.http://thewrongtreemoviereviews.blogspot.co.uk/
OrdinaryDay With reboots and re imaginings and re-whatever's being the in thing in Hollywood, I approached this title with trepidation. What made the American Pie series (not including the direct to DVD spin offs) such a class act was the way in which they injected heart and soul into a timeworn tradition of rude smutty comedies. They perfectly balanced dirty humor with cute sentimentality, and they paved the way for a spate of inferior teenage comedies in the early 2000s, such as Road Trip.I was worried that this long awaited 'official' sequel (I don't count the spin offs) would try to be too clever for it's own good, and keep the smuttiness but lose the heart of the AP series.Just a few moments in I was so relieved to discover my fears were unfounded. This movie is an uproarious welcome back for the class of '99, with characters, such as Jim, growing in a realistic fashion. The results are awesome to behold - Jim, no longer the awkward dateless virgin, is now realistically an awkward 30-something adult worried that his marriage is losing the spark. Stifler is still the infamous Stifler, but now he has t worry about more 'adult' fears like holding down his job and being nice to his jerk boss. The movie perfectly complements the heart of the first three movies, with the rude jokes we have all come to expect. And ever major character gets a welcome return and a kind of closure as the movie wraps up their stories nicely. This movie doesn't reinvent the gross out comedy, and it was never meant to. It simply gives us another welcome slice of one of the greatest high school comedy series ever. Welcome back, boys.
