Nonureva Really Surprised!
Platicsco Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Tymon Sutton The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
Dana An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
HotToastyRag H.G. Wells created a host of memorable science fiction stories, and if you know the character of Dr. Moreau, you'll be a little more familiar with the story of Island of Lost Souls than I was. Richard Arlen gets shipwrecked on an island inhabited by strange human-animal hybrids, and the mastermind behind them is the deranged mad scientist Charles Laughton. Richard's fiancé Leila Hyams tries to find him, and Charles tries to get Richard to fall for Kathleen Burke, a "panther woman" in the meantime. This pre-code movie is pretty creepy. I did hide my eyes during a couple of scenes, so if you have little kiddies with you, you might want to rent another movie instead. It's easy to see the similarities between this story and The Time Machine, which I also found scary as a kid. Bela Lugosi and a dozen extras are made up to be "ape-men", with hair all over their face and body. If anyone tried to make this movie two or three years later, it would doubtlessly be much different, with less torture scenes and a more conservative costume for Kathleen, whose figure is put on full display every time she's in front of the camera.Unless you go in for old horror movies-this one reminded me of Freaks-I would stick with The Time Machine if I were you. This movie really isn't that great unless it's your niche of choice.
jefferbster The better of the Island of Dr Moreau films out there! As one of the first, in black and white, I found this to be very close to the original storyline. I read the HG Wells book and enjoyed it. There was a lot of propaganda against vivisection at the time, and HG Wells really disliked Walter Bradford Canon. Dr Moreau is effectively him, who worked much at Harvard doing experiments mostly on cats. This is a good film noir and you will like it.
MonsterVision99 Island Of Lost Souls is a one of a kind horror film, its a great film, the acting its great, the cinematography its also great, there's even a chilling atmosphere to it, some of the scenes in this film made me felt rather unnerved. The film is about beasts or animals, rebellion, Christianity and much more. The films symbolism its not very subtle, but it gets the job done.It also features one of the greatest endings in B&W horror films, the last scene is iconic and chilling, I felt rather disturbed while watching it, I would definitely recommend it if you haven't seen it, Bela Lugosi its in a few scenes, but hes great in the scenes hes in, you will not be disappointed.
Johan Louwet This movie seems to be rather obscure and I think that is quite a pity. OK it is not going to win prizes for best horror or most original story yet for the year it was made in, there haven't been too many other creature movies preceding this one. And instead of one monster as for example in Frankenstein or Dracula we now have a whole bunch of them. Here we have a story that is well known even though I haven't seen that many movies about this theme. Here we have the typical mad scientist wonderfully played by Charles Laughton residing on a small island which is not to be found on the world map doing experiments on the animals there. His ultimate goal is to make complete humans of them. Even though these "humans" still have physical features of the animals they once were he was successful in giving them the ability to speak and enforce human law upon them. The way these creatures look are really well done, speak of creativity of the makers. Kathleen Burke as the Panther Lady is a real treat, plays her role convincing. The character of Dr. Moreau that gaze and the way he keeps the creatures under his thumbs with his whip and tongue it's great. And even if I did understand the creatures revolting against their creator, I felt sorry that it ended for him in such a tragic way. Very strong last scenes with some tragic deaths.
