Twelve year old Ryan Billings has been diagnosed with an acute fear of the dark. He spends each night lying awake in torment, waiting and watching as the evil in the darkness grows stronger, feeding off his fear. His older brother Dale, suspects that there is nothing wrong with Ryan and that this is just a ploy for more attention. Regardless, he promises to watch over his little brother as their parents head off to a party for the night. Outside a storm rages and when the power goes out, darkness envelops the house. Ryan knows that tonight the evil has finally come to claim him. Dale desperately tries everything to try and calm him down, until the horrors in the dark make him realize Ryan had good reason to be so afraid!

okiecrabjp I've been pleasantly surprised with a few finds of late, that fit the swiftly disappearing "family friendly" horror movies, especially the supernatural horror movies, that can be creepy or even genuinely scary, but do it without resorting to constant blatant jump scares that startle, or buckets of gore, or pad it with gratituitous sex, cursing or drug use. This movie had a commendable very small cast of just the younger phobic brother, his older brother, understanding and protective but irritated at the younger's phobias, and the older brother's third fiddle but sympathetic girlfriend. To the movie's credit, we get something rarely seen in ANY movie now: likable characters - all of them. The monsters and the effects don't show up all that much but are used effectively when they do, mostly staying appropriately hidden, leaving the movie to be carried by the acting between mostly the two brothers in tense but mostly ultimately mundane scenes, which is admittedly a gamble nowdays, but I have to say I even enjoyed those. I really thought this was a very well done movie and I recommend it to anyone who liked traditional cleaner horror movies suitable for mid and late teens and older.
scoup This was surprisingly good - you just have to realize that it is not a blood and gore fest.Fear of the Dark is almost a purist film; it is literally a story of a couple of kids who become afraid of the dark. It is not bogged down with lure or mythos and the need to explain who what why and where (alternately, the lack of explanation could be viewed as a film weakness). Is it clichéd? Somewhat, but the director does build enough tension to keep it interesting and scary. It is low budget so the effects are not great; however this lends itself to a certain charm and reminiscence of 80's classics.
suzlars First of all, you have to be a Horror Movie fanatic to appreciate this movie. It represents everything you felt as a kid about "the dark". I felt every single flinch, fear, and gasp, that the boys felt--just as I did when my parents went out every Friday night and left me and my sister alone.. I was on the edge through the whole movie, having to gasp for air...I love all those parts in horror movies where you're telling them to get out or not go into the room, but they do...And it makes you even less able to breathe. I loved the movie because I thrive on suspense & thriller movies, and that it depicted my adolescent Friday and Saturday nights left alone on stormy nights...But again, if you're not a horror & suspense movie fan, then why are you bothering to read this or even watch the movie?!!
bigbird9 I am a sixteen year old girl and I have been watching thriller/horror movies since... as log as I can remember. I can rarely find a movie that scares me anymore, let alone gives me a thrill. When I watched this movie on television i was so scared I had to pause it several times and drag my younger sister in the family room to watch it with me. I loved seeing Kevin Zegers in this movie and was shocked to learn that the co-star was older than I thought, but this movie pulls you in and I thoroughly enjoyed. I really liked that there was only one basic set which is hard to come by in the movie world. I felt like such a little kid again having a "Fear of the Dark!"
