Acensbart Excellent but underrated film
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
zkonedog When I began watching this movie, I completely expected a rip-off of the hilariously funny "Bruce Almighty" starring Jim Carrey. Same concept, same jokes, same old, right?! Thankfully, this version went in a bit of a different direction and was all the better for it.The film follows news-caster Evan (from the first film, played by Steve Carell) as he leaves the newsroom behind and branches out into politics. Of course, just when it seems he has it made, he gets a little visit from God (once again personified brilliantly by Morgan Freeman). God tells Evan that he must build an Ark (ala Noah), as "a flood is coming". At first, Evan tries desperately to ignore or even outright thwart the "hand of God", but quickly learns that such an attitude is impossible. Thus, the Ark begins to be built and hilarity ensues.Yet, despite the great sight sags and situational humor that Carell (of "The Office" fame) nails so perfectly, is this film really a comedy? I would have to say an emphatic "no". The only actual jokes offered are commentary from Wanda Sykes, and those get old real fast. Instead, the directors/producers use a combination of those sight gags and crazy situations to fashion a family film with a great message and a compelling storyline. Basically, while it may not have you laughing out loud, you will find yourself chuckling throughout, then actually caring about what happens to the characters at the end.Going in that more family-oriented direction saved this film from becoming a re-tread of the first effort. The writers knew that only Carrey could have nailed the physical comedy and "in-your- face" jokes of "Bruce Almighty", so they toned it down a bit for the much more understated (yet still funny in its own way) Carell. This film is perfectly safe to watch with your children and enjoy with the entire family. It isn't an instant classic, but you won't be looking at your watch, either.
Amy Edwards When Bruce Almighty was released to the public in 2003, I really laughed it out. The general idea of seeing Jim Carrey becoming God was really enjoyable to watch. So here is the sequel with Evan (Steve Carell, amazing) as the main character, who is now embracing the path of a congressman, is chosen by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an ark because another biblical flood is coming in.Let's be clear, Evan will not have superpowers like his previous workmate, Bruce Nolan, had the privilege to get rewarded to accomplish his mighty job. He is on his own with God on his side who is enjoying himself to turn Evan into Noah: His hair becomes longer, he is growing a long beard despite shaving continuously, he's even trading his nice political suit for a long shackled dress.During that time, Evan is trying to continue carrying on his job of congressman, provoking more and more disbelief from his fellow workmates and staff while his appearance is changing. At the end he is taken for a nut and a laughing stock by the general population and journalists who are watching him building the Ark. But at the end of the movie, the flood (which was much less disastrous as the Biblical one) finally happens, prompting Evan to let all his detractors to enter the ark saving them and as a result, is celebrated like he deserves to be.What is lacking in this script is the general craziness and freedom Jim Carrey enjoyed in Bruce Almighty. Seeing him torturing and playing with the people around him by using his Mighty powers was the most enjoyable thing to see in the first movie. Unfortunately in this sequel, Steve Carell doesn't enjoy the same level of creating freedom. That's the biggest regret of this movie. Maybe if the huge comic potential of Steve Carell would have been better employed, this movie would have had another impact on the audience.
sales-282 The cast was fantastic. The animals superb. The art work, the unparalleled attention to detail, the extraordinary sets. The special effects worked. The story was superb, the film was a rare mixture of story, imagination, great comedy and somehow even this most fantastical of tales worked. It kept you guessing the whole time and the story tied up nicely. Political corruption, greed, avarice, moral bankruptcy. To those who scoff. I say to those cynics, where is your imagination? Why have you chosen to become so cynical? If you can do better, then you try writing such a story, you herd up thousands of the worlds animals and you build an ark. if you do please invite me around. I promise to keep an open mind, not to mock, nor be cynical.A+
FilmBuff1994 Evan Almighty is a good movie with a very promising storyline that definitely could have been done better, and a good comedic cast. The movie is a spin-off to Bruce Almighty focusing on Steve Carell's character Evan Baxter, although in this the character is a lot more likable than Evan was previously. The script was certainly nothing outstanding and there was nothing extremely funny in this, but Carell did the best he could with this script and certainly improved on it,I also really enjoyed seeing Morgan Freeman reprise his role as God.Its nowhere near as good as Bruce Almighty and Jim Carrey's absence won't go unnoticed but Evan Almighty is still an enjoyable movie with some funny parts and also some surprisingly great special effects,I would recommend it to watch if you ever see it on television and have some time to kill. A congressman looking to change the world for the better is assigned by God to build an ark and gather two of every animal.Best Performance: Steve Carell Worst Performance: John Michael Higgins
