AniInterview Sorry, this movie sucks
VeteranLight I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Bergorks If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
Kimball Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
gpaltrow2001 OMG! The only reason I'm giving this movie a 2 instead of a 1 is because Tom Hanks is funny as an Elvis-in-the-box. Apart from that, how did this halfway decent cast sign on to do such a lame movie?? Maybe it seemed like a good idea at the time... There are no laughs to mention, the stereotypes are pathetic, the cast is wasted, the direction is amateurish. Now that I think about it, most of the blame probably lies with the director, Joel Zwick. He brings out nothing but flat performances from all involved. Don't waste your time like I did; but then, I enjoy a good train wreck. Geez, now the system is telling me I need more lines-- here ya go: This movie should be called Return to Sender. Okay, now THAT was funnier than anything in the movie...
strafenkinder-1 Elvis Would Have Wept By Doy AriolaThis quirky romantic comedy is yet another indication of how Hollywood is desperately running dry on original material. Shamelessly using a popular music icon as a come on, "Elvis Has Left The Building" is a movie that you will curse for having wasted an hour and a half of your life.Harmony Jones is a beautiful middle aged blonde struggling with a crisis. Not only is she fretting over her boring life as the spokesperson for Pink Lady cosmetics, but Elvis impersonators around her end up dead. As she tries to finish her sales pitch tour while simultaneously making heads or tails of the alarming mortality she unwittingly causes, the FBI and a smitten ad exec (John Corbett) are on hot pursuit. But after having been touched by the King as a child, she prays to him -- like a deity – for guidance and asks for help. Answers are not easily forthcoming, however, but in the end, what proves to be a bane has become her salvation. Like God, Elvis also moves in mysterious ways. I applaud screenwriters Mitchell Ganem and Adam-Mitchell Garber for creating a script that is hackneyed, half-hearted and sorely unfunny. How this script got the greenlight is totally beyond me. Director Zwick may have been dazzled by the premise, but he did not even attempt to overcome the overwhelming blandness of the script to turn it around. If they had pushed the envelope even more, this movie wouldn't have been such a cliché-driven droll. Maybe that's why Zwick managed to lure Tom Hanks, Richard Kind, Pat Morita and a slew of talented comedians in this movie -- for padding. I even think Zwick and this movie aren't well-matched. Maybe Joe Dante's too busy.To be fair, Kim Basinger made a superb (and rare) performance as the befuddled and panicky lead. Her luminous presence here reminded me of her past forays into more successful comedies like "My Stepmother is an Alien" and "Nadine". I almost mistook Corbett as Jeff Bridges in this movie. She manages to get over the horrendous dialogue and make us feel for her, for a few moments.Horrible as "Elvis Has Left The Building" may be, the movie turns an unlikely evil eye to America's commercialization and cheapening of the Elvis heritage. The movie lifts its nose on Americans who had turned Elvis' memory into a travesty of kitsch! Even though I really dug that subtext, the movie doesn't really fully realize its potential and opts for that run-of-the-mill plotting reserved for Jennifer Love Hewitt and Hilary Duff vehicles.Don't you dare watch this movie! But should it become available, buy the soundtrack instead. The movie has a sublime collection of Elvis songs performed with such panache by the likes of Norah Jones and Babyface. Kim Basinger even got to sing a nice rendition of "You Were Always On My Mind". You'll feel so much better after.
tkleeman This movie starts a bit slow, and you have to bear a bit of malice toward Elvis impersonators (who doesn't?), but it is hilarious. Kim Basinger is perfect as the guardian of Elvis's true spirit who unwittingly brings doom to a whole string of bogus Elvis's as she keeps pure the memory of her own childhood encounter with the real thing. And the Elvises all come to such delicious ends. The final mass annihilation of Elvises opens Harmony's eyes and we see finally see the angry Elvis behind all of the misfortune. If you like black humor, don't miss this gem. I only wish they had a found an actor to play the real Elvis who looked more the part...
Michael O'Keefe For starters, if you are an Elvis fan, prepare to laugh your butt off...or just plain be *+ss!d. This comedy is funny and a little sick. Harmony Jones(Kim Basinger)is a traveling cosmetic sales woman...a Pink Lady...primarily pushing lipstick. While on the road, she witnesses an Elvis impersonator(Richard Kind)burst into flames. Trying to avoid being arrested for murder; she hits the road. Along the way, a couple more impersonators(David Leisure and Tom Hanks) bite the dust with Harmony inadvertently involved. Now two hapless FBI agents(Mike Starr and Phill Lewis)are hot on her trail. A bewildered Miss Jones accidentally meets the man of her dreams...a depressed advertising executive(John Corbett), who happens to be taking his estranged wife's(Denise Richards)Elvis suit to an impersonators convention in Vegas. Harmony thinks the suit is his and hopes to avoid harm coming to him. Also in the cast: Sean Astin, Annie Potts and Angie Dickinson. Wayne Newton and Pat Morita appear in cameos. Fluff and fun. Basinger proves to still be an eyeful. Corbett is great in the role sharing the romantic lead.
