Kirandeep Yoder The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
Fatma Suarez The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Bob This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
quridley The rare Dan Aykroyd-driven film. It's a simple SNL-type premise: The Nutty Professor but with pimps. But Aykroyd ensures it's classy, lively and good spirited. It's low on big laughs or clever gags but it's very watchable for the excellent casting, soundtrack and a few rewarding scenes including a clear ode to The a Blues Brothers. If only it was directed by a more comedy-inclined filmmaker.
merklekranz Okay, the characters are lively and likable, but the story is cartoon-like, so simplified that it is totally forgettable. One positive is the sharp editing, that keeps things moving along. Negatives would be the lack of enough laughs to recommend second viewings, and cartoon-like goings on that are seriously squirm inducing. "Doctor Detroit" comes across as a not fully developed "Saturday Night Live" skit. While the characters are certainly colorful, there is no real bite to the story. Fran Drescher and Howard Hessman try their stereotyped best, while Dan Aykroyd cavorts about trying to hold things together, but to no avail. Stick with "Trading Places" and avoid the comedic letdown of "Doctor Detroit". - MERK
eastcoastguyz What is so special about this movie, and makes worth repeated viewings are the story's development and the execution of the acting performances. The comedy is always spot on, and the casting is perfect. It also has an intelligent story line which you lightly can see how it relates to the teachings in the class room scenes. The parody of capture regarding the tenured faculty members of the college is perfect especially at one meeting where one is most concerned if there will be a fruit cup served at the event. There are no weak performances in this movie, everyone is right for the part and they deliver! Anything more would be considered a spoiler, so I highly recommend you watch this movie and just enjoy it. The best way to see it is to not learn anything more about it than I have just wrote.
Dvd Avins Ackroyd's awkward professor role finds himself sucked into a secret wild life. OK, it's not very plausible, but it doesn't require more suspension of belief than most other comedies. At the end, there's a nice underlying message (which, depending on your mode can be subtle or cloddishly obvious) that if you have something to say and you stumble onto a bully pulpit, USE IT.In this case, what Ackroyd had to say isn't exactly original, now matter how true it and important it is. But the process he goes through to come out of his shell and make the most of his situation is heart-warming (when you're not laughing too hard) and inspiring.
