Greenes Please don't spend money on this.
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
Sexyloutak Absolutely the worst movie.
Fatma Suarez The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Animated Antic It seems that no sequel can capture the original spirit of Victor Fleming's 1939 classic, "The Wizard of Oz". Ever since that movie was released to theaters around the world, it has captured the hearts of children and adults and will continue to do so for years to come. It's a film that stands on it's own without the support of followups. Too bad Hollywood doesn't see that. For years, they have tried again and again to create a sequel to the timeless classic and all have failed. A notable example was the 1985 sequel "Return to Oz" which was too dark and unpleasant to be seen as a sequel. In fact, both Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel actually heavily criticized it for opening with Dorothy receiving electroshock therapy. Yeah, that actually happened. The reason I bring that movie up is because I think the film "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return" is worse. Not only did this movie bore me, but it annoyed me and also left little to be remembered. Here's exactly what happened.Dorothy Gale (Lea Michele) has seen a shock after a tornado has destroyed the farm of Auntie Em and Uncle Henry and to make maters worse, an appraiser has come to the house to tell them that it is to be condemned and force them to move out. However, we later put that aside until the end of the movie when Dorothy is magically transported to Oz by the Scarecrow (Dan Aykroyd), Tin Man (Kelsey Grammar) and Coward Lion (James Belushi) telling her that Oz is in trouble due to the evil reign of a Jester (Martin Short) who was the brother to the evil Wicked Witch of the West. Hoping to get to Emerald City to stop this, she and a few friends she comes across including a very smart owl named Wiser (Oliver Platt), a general in a candy kingdom called Marshal Mallow (Hugh Dancy) and a princess of a china kingdom (Megan Hilty) so she can save her friends and stop the evil Jester from causing more terror. Yeah, it's so predictable. As soon as the film started, I was instantly confused by what this film wanted to be. If it's supposed to be a direct sequel to the classic film, then why is Kansas now in modern times and why do Auntie Em and Uncle Henry look so different? Not only that, it was just dull. Nothing seemed interesting about the story due to it's predictable nature. In fact, as soon as the film started I began to pick it up instantly. Here's how some of the scenes go. Dorothy and one of her friends get in trouble in a small kingdom and are about to be punished, then the friend reveals to the people that she is intact Dorothy Gale and they get off Scott free while having another companion join them. What lazy storytelling. The animation is nothing to brag about either. It's okay due to it's good character designs and some decent colors, but was rather uninteresting and provided nothing new. I certainly didn't care about whether any of the characters would succeed due to them having nothing to them either. While I do think that Lea Michele is a decent replacement of Judy Garland for Dorothy, the other casting choices were a bit questionable. Though I like Akroyd, Grammar and Belushi, I certainly don't see them fit to play characters from one of the most beloved movies of all time. Not only that, the new characters are also not interesting as well. All they are is nice or evil and that's it. No other aspects to them, nothing to set them apart, just a bunch of blank slates. As for the songs, they're some of the most forgettable I've seen in animated movie in a while. In fact, I completely forgot them immediately after I heard them. To make it more embarrassing, five people worked on the songs with none of them realizing that they don't have any passion to them. They just left no impact. In fact, that's what I can describe "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return" in a nutshell. It left no impact. It just bored me by giving us a repeated storyline, only okay animation, uninteresting characters and forgettable songs. If I were you, just stay on the original yellow brick road and only watch the 1939 classic. You surely won't get lost as well as have some fun on the way.
Python Hyena Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return (2013): Dir: Will Finn, Dan St. Pierre / Voices: Lea Michele, Martin Short, Hugh Dancy, Oliver Platt, Megan Hilty: Unnecessary animated sequel of sorts to the classic masterpiece The Wizard of Oz. The villain here is Jester, the brother of the wicked witch of the original film. He takes over Emerald City with the fleet of flying monkeys overthrowing the Scarecrow, Tin Man and the now brave Lion. The Scarecrow sends a message to Kansas to young Dorothy Gale who has her own issues when her homefront is threatened to be sold. She and her dog, Toto are swept up within a rainbow and spiralled off to Oz. Like the original film she is accompanied by an assortment of characters including an overweight owl named Wiser, a marshmallow soldier named Marshal Mallow whom she met in Candyland, and finally an ornament China princess named Queen Mouse. These characters are appealing but the screenplay is stale. None of the songs are memorable but the animation is colourful and detailed. Directed by Will Finn and Dan St. Pierre with Lea Michele as the appropriate voice of Dorothy whose status is legendary. Martin Short provides amusement as the voice of villain Jester. Oliver Platt as Wiser struggles to fly, and Hugh Dancy voicing Marshal Mallow demonstrates loyalty protecting the China princess. Megan Hilty voices the uptight China Princess who learns a thing or two about self sacrifice. Children may enjoy the animation but parents may wish to introduce them to the film where Judy Garland sang about the true nature over the rainbow. Score: 5 / 10
itsjustaaro_1 The definitive version of Oz may be the Judy Garland film, but it's spin-offs, related sequels, always seem to fade out faster than one would come to expect. Why is that? I've never quite understood that myself - could it be there isn't much need for a continuation? And what makes a good continuation for Oz films to continue, besides simply reading the books? I may never know the answers to these questions, but I can certainly say Legends of Oz certainly wasn't a failure by any means. With a spirited and lively cast the film is full of energy, never missing a beat. While the cold opening of the film setting us up for what lay ahead seems to be an interesting one, I did feel we were thrust into the film's plot fairly quickly without time to really grasp who some of these characters are. It's never a good thing to tell us "here's who they are, and this is what is happening" in less than the first five minutes, a little bit of insight could've made me grasp the would-be Jester (or the real estate fellow in the beginning) a bit better. While it's true the animation might not feel completely up to standard to Dreamworks or Blue Sky or Pixar, it's certainly not bad in my opinion. When compared to the last movie I reviewed, 'Sir Billi', I think we have ourselves to thank it was blessed with some decent enough technicians behind the scenes. While it's certainly not a bad film it's far from terrible as critics everywhere may say. Maybe it's because Dorothy looks like Anna from Frozen, or the Lion simply lacks what any big guy character is usually voice acted by... Patrick Warburton.
Ryan Prince -Legends Of Oz: Dorothy's Return is the animated film based on the book Dorothy of OZ, which sees Dorothy return to Oz to help save it from The Jester. Along the way, she meets new friends and reunited with old friends.-I'll be honest, the only reason I watched it was because I love Oz, but I actually was not disappointed.-The story itself is a lot like the original. The ending doesn't matter as much as the journey. That said, many elements of the story, and overall film, feel really young. I know it's an animated film, but still.-The pace is pretty good.-The voice cast was good, but I loved Kelsey Grammar as Tin Man! -The characters are not that deep and have feel made towards younger audiences. The villain, Jester, was pretty funny. I hates Scarecrow though. He was the worst.-The music was nice. There were some musical songs to it, which I really liked. However, there were only like 3 and they were not unified in style.-I loved Oz. It was pretty and nostalgic! -It's PG.-So Legends Of Oz: Dorothy's Return has some fun, entertaining elements mixed with some younger elements that are definitely for kids. I will say it's not a bad Nexflix/Redbox watch though. 7/10.
