ThedevilChoose When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
chamfrom One of the most beautifully made 18th century productions I have ever seen set in the most stunning city in the world. Costume was exquisite and so much attention to detail in every corner of the film. A fantastic cast of actors who were all excellent. I was not expecting a historical documentary about Casanova, but what I did get was the most beautifully historically accurate film with regards to location and costume. Sadly however the film was utterly spoilt for me, especially towards the end, with the most dreadful slapstick comedy which really detracted from the quality of this production. This film very nearly got switched off 10 minutes before the end. Such a waste of a fantastic opportunity. So near and yet so far.
solism The screen is lit up by a more charming than usual Casanova, who runs through his share of self brought on perils, with swift action and charm, the characters in this Romantic Comedy, flow very well, while maintaining the expected dynamics of the legendary romancer. Oliver Platt provides excellent comic relief in his part of Paprizzio with his usual reckless abandon style of acting, but the cast as a whole makes this film utterly enjoyable, the customs and cinematography are quite excellent, and the film editing is sharp. So, sit comfortably and enjoy a clearly more entertaining version of Giacomo Casanova, you'll want to see it again and again!
asiduodiego The story of Casanova is the tale of one of the greatest lovers of all time. It should be a story of sensuality, passion, intrigue... but, alas, when it becomes Disney, all we get is just another sappy romantic comedy, but a funny one, at least. The story is the typical fiasco of "the lover who finds his true love", but well told, funny-paced and with good acting. Of course, during the course of the movie, the clichés mount almost embarrassingly, one over the top of the next one: "The feminist ahead of her time", "the fat comic relief", "the young apprentice", etc. But, at the same time, it's so recognizable and light-hearted, that all the flaws are forgiven, and then we just can sit and enjoy this silly and lovely story, in midst of impressive scenarios. The acting is good. Ledger is good in this one, showing skill to perform the enigmatic Casanova, and the rest of the actors are decent enough to makes us enjoy this Venetian holiday. In conclusion?, not a boring movie, but nothing special. It's just an enjoyable and lovely experience.7/10
Chrysanthepop 'Casanova' is a funny Venecian comedy that has a good doze of romance, humour, drama and colour. Yes, the sets and costumes are pleasantly colourful. The art direction deserves credit. Even though the sets look theatrical, it fits with the presentation. The whimsical score adds energy. The editing is mostly good but the film does drag a little in the middle. In terms of story, there isn't anything new (which is the usual case with romantic comedies) and I would have liked to see the love blossom between Casanova and Francesca after they find out each other's identity and also how Casanova resists his 'urge' to be with other women in order to be faithful to Francesca. The dialogues are witty and amusing. Heath Ledger fits the part and effectively pulls off the title role. Sienna Miller is unrecognizable but still pretty. She may arguably be a little too young for the part but is still vivacious and her youth adds to the stubbornness of the character. Lena Olin has a graceful presence. Oliver Platt is hilarious. The romantic track between Paprizzio and Andrea is among the most endearing and funniest moments. Omid Djalili is great as the sidekick. Jeremy Irons is good too. 'Casanova' isn't pathbreaking cinema but it would make for a good date movie or a Sunday night/rainy day film. It's colorfully vibrant. It's funny. It's nice to look at.
