Merolliv I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

Bergorks If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.

princebansal1982 This is a lovely movie. It starts out a fun comedy movie. Then changes tracks halfway to become a sensual movie and then ends on a bittersweet dramatic note. And it does all this effortlessly without falling into any clichés. The premise itself is very fresh and it is wonderfully developed. It is about a straight-laced army captain who is given a very different assignment. He is tasked with providing prostitutes for soldiers in remote posts. Initially he is reluctant but after he sees that he has no other alternative, he goes into his work with a great zeal.While the side actors were not as good, the lead actors have done a very good job especially Salvador del Solar as Pantaleón Pantoja. This movie has been photographed beautifully and the sensual scenes are just amazing.

Jay Harris This is a charmer from Peru.The army assigns very diligent young captain to provide special visitors (ladies of the evening)n to soldiers serving in Jungle outposts in the back country.Our hero is very happily married,One of the ladies, likes our hero, I will not say more. This is a very well made & acted film. malcolm3-2 A marvelous combination of story, direction and acting! The director, Francisco J. Lombardi, has apparently never directed a bad, or even mediocre movie - The author of the original story, Mario Vargas llosa, is widely acclaimed, and appropriately so.The casting is superb - no one will ever forget Angie Cepeda, as Columbiana - and Pochita ( Monica Sanchez ) can get mad as good as any actress to ever grace the Big Screen.Aristoteles Picho is perfect as "El Sinchi."The dialogue is extremely well done, judging from the English sub-titles. I assume the spoken Spanish is equally outstanding.Although a highly entertaining comedy, it appropriately reflects an underlying message regarding morality, the military and politics for those who care to observe and reflect.An essential addition to almost any DVD collection ( It is rated "R," but I would not call it a "hard" "R." )

caddessh I read the book about 1988 and saw most of the movie on TV in Lima in June 2002. The movie captured the spirit of the book very well.I worked as a civilian employee in a military agency for 30 years. Never during my career did I encounter an officer who was as dedicated and competent as Pantaleon Pantojas. That was the striking feature in the book and in the movie, as well.Although Iquitos, the city on the Amazon where much of the movie was filmed, is much larger than what is shown in the movie, some elements of the life on the river are reflected in the film.Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a VHS copy of the movie?Hugh
