Marketic It's no definitive masterpiece but it's damn close.
Livestonth I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
Janis One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
gavin6942 An idealistic, modern-day cowboy (Clint Eastwood) struggles to keep his Wild West show afloat in the face of hard luck and waning interest.Right off the bat, we have to say that this film has some of the same themes as Robert Altman's "Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson" (1976). However, there is one key difference, and that is the time period. Altman's film took place when "Wild West" still meant something, whereas Eastwood's movie has a traveling troupe well past the prime of the genre.Exactly what the message is, if there is one, I do not know. It seems that Bronco Billy is in the latter half of his life, no longer the star he once was, and it might be time for him to move on. But he does not do that. So, does that mean the message is to keep following your dreams even after they die? I don't know.
slightlymad22 Bronco Billy (1980)Plot In A Paragraph: Bronco Billy (Clint) an idealistic, modern-day cowboy struggles to keep his Wild West show afloat in the face of waning interest.I always thought that this was another Malpaso Company production, (especially since it cast is full of Malpaso regulars) but it's actually produced by Second Street Films. Making this Eastwood's first film since Kelly's Heroes (10 yeas ago) not produced by his own company. A personal favourite of Clint's, Bronco Billy is a charming little movie, very similar to Every Which Way But Loose in that it just ambles along pleasantly from one scene to another. Like EWWBL, this is another movie I'd have expected from Burt Reynolds at the time, and could easily imagine Reynolds in the role. Once again Sondra Locke is playing an unappealing character, and it's worth noting that she is once again the victim of a sexual assault (What's with that??) along with Locke, previous Eastwood Co Stars Bill McKinney, Geoffrey Lewis, Sam Bottoms, Walter Barnes, Dan Vardis and William Prince all appear. Like their character in The Gauntlet, Eastwood and Locke are constantly at each other's throats, until the win is each other's hearts. There is a sweetness to Eastwoods Billy who frequently performs for free at orphanages and hospitals. He holds the doors for old ladies and loves kids, always taking the opportunity to warn them away from cigarettes, booze, telling lies and playing Hookey from school!! Annoyingly, it always irritates me that Bronco Billy does not get any form of revenge on the Sheriff who humiliates him. (Much like Gazzo's driver in Rocky and the douche who humiliated Rocky in Rocky 2. "Can't you think of anything tougher to say than ooops!!") Bronco Billy grossed $24 million at the domestic box office to end the year as the 26th highest grossing movie of 1980.
stowbury A heart-warming movie with plenty of wry humour and some absolutely hilarious moments. Who would have thought that a film starring Clint Eastwood roaming the Western states in cowboy gear could be so uncannily reminiscent of a classic romantic screwball comedy of the 1930s? In spirit, structure and message, not to mention the core protagonists and storyline it's a close bedfellow of It Happened One Night. That splendid entertainment was not without its gritty realism and depth, and here there is more - the acts in the Wild West show have just the right flavour of unpolished skill, the confrontation between Eastwood and the malevolent sheriff ends in resigned frustration at not being able to beat him to the draw and blow him away in the style to which we are accustomed. The juxtaposition between the itinerant performers scratching a living out on the road, setting up in one small town after another to deliver their unvarying yet fraught routines and the deliberately comic-strip avaricious urbanite rich, with Sondra Locke as the unwilling new member of the troupe caught between the two worlds is handled with considerable skill. The characters are nicely drawn, the plot is laced with a good smattering of ironic twist, the milieu is superbly evoked, and the overall effect is both light-hearted and sincere. A joy.
Syl The only reason that I got this film was to see Beverlee McKinsey as the rich New York society lady and stepmother to Sondra Locke's character. She is a wealthy heiress who runs away to join the circus. Clint Eastwood can do wrong and is probably America's best loved director. In this small comedic film, he has a stellar cast including himself as Bronco Billy, Sondra Locke as the heiress and his real-life girlfriend at the time, Beverlee McKinsey, Scatman Crothers, and others. They filmed all over the place including New York City. The story of a wealthy heiress who rejects her New York City lifestyle including her wealth to see what life is like outside only to find love is not something that you can buy or purchase at a store.
