Robert Griffith "There is nothing wrong with your television set...". One of the most famous opening lines to one of the greatest sc-fi series of all times, "The Outer Limits"(1963-65 - 49 episodes). I've been re visiting this ground breaking, awesome anthology series. I have fond memories of watching this late at night, as a 12 year old...Under the covers of my bed and peering out...And having my mind blown by some of the head-y sci-fi concepts and story lines. In the pilot, "The Galaxy being", scientist Cliff Riobertson converses with an alien from the andromeda galaxy about such things as what death is and the concept of God! A great show, with great writers (Like Harlan Ellison), actors (Like Robert Culp. David McCallum, Bruce Dern, Martin Sheen and Cliff Robinson) and veteran sci-fi directors like Byron Haskin. The show was years ahead of it's time and featured some truly memorable creatures and aliens. The influence of the show also spread later on to shows like "Star Trek" and "The terminator"(based loosely on two famous episodes, "Soldier" and "Demon With A Glass Hand"). If you have never seen it, THIS is must see sci fi TV. Here are my 10 favorite episodes, which I also highly recommend, but you really can't go wrong watching any of them!1 - "The Sixth Finger" 2 - "Demon With A Glass Hand" 3 - "The Galaxy Being" 4 - "Soldier" 5 - "Nightmare" 6 - "The Zanti Misfits" 7 - "It Crawled Out Of The Woodwork" 8 - "A Feasibikity Study" 9 - "Archetects Of Fear" 10 - "Corpus Earthling"
pdmanske I have a good idea why The Outer Limits was so memorable and it had to do with the original series' mimicking the test of The Emergency Broadcast System and taking things one step beyond. The scariest thing on TV in those days was "This is a test, this is only a test". That always got your attention. It was rude and serious and broke into regularly scheduled broadcasting. It was the weekly abrupt reminder that you were a minute away from a range of life ending terrors and unimaginable destruction. And what did TOL's Control Voice sound like? Thats right, it sounded exactly like "This is a test". We rarely got past "This is a test" but for the next sixty seconds you indulged into thoughts of h*ll on earth and then h*ll beyond earth.TOL is what happened when events were real and you got to "This is an actual emergency". TOL showed you while on the comfort of your sofa real events that warrant EBS activation. That was clever of the writers and producers to tap into thoughts that way. I understand writers must recognize contemporary world to make relevant material but these folks knew more, they knew secrets. After that, the Indian Head test pattern meant you were abandoned and left unprotected by your TV company and left alone with the night time things in your basement and attic.
chrisart47 James Camerons AVATAR owes a debt to The Chameleon from the OLD outer limits! Robert Duvall portrayed the spy who's DNA was combined with aliens to produce an Alien-like being who then infiltrates an alien hideout to spy and kill the alien beings. The spy eventually sides with the alien-enemy and becomes one of them and leaves the earth to explore new horizons. Avatar is a composite of A man called hoarse. Dances with wolves. Fern-gully. This episode was a classic. The producers also gave us PSYCHO and FORBIDDEN PLANET! James Camerons AVATAR owes a debt to The Chameleon from the OLD outer limits! mackaroni I,like many of these other IMDb reviewers loved "The Outer Limits" and consider it my all-time favorite show. Like them, I was a very young kid probably about 8 or 9 years of age when I saw the original episodes and they scared me half to death. The atmosphere of the show was incredible unlike anything I had ever seen on television before and the special effects were way ahead of their time for television of that period with such a limited budget. Now as I sometimes get to watch the reruns of the show, I am amazed at how creative and thought-provoking the scripts were and what an outstanding series it really was. This was science fiction at its finest with incredible acting, a haunting musical score and phenomenal writing. I have probably watched all of the episodes more than once and regret that they don't show reruns on television anymore. The new remake of the show was nothing like the original "Outer Limits" and I long for the original episodes again from "The Galaxy Being" and "The Sixth Finger" (two of the finest episodes ever written for TV) to "Nightmare" which gave me a few nightmares after viewing it and the two-part episode "The Inheritors". This was a show way ahead of its time and probably will never be recreated again in this day and age.
