Synopsis

Sledge Hammer! is an American satirical police sitcom produced by New World Television that ran for two seasons on ABC from 1986 to 1988. The series was created by Alan Spencer and stars David Rasche as Inspector Sledge Hammer, a preposterous caricature of the standard "cop on the edge" character. Al Jean and Mike Reiss, best known for their work on The Simpsons, wrote for the show and worked as story editors.

AshUnow This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Gary The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
jefffisher65-708-541158 It's good to know that Sledge Hammer! is out on DVD now; I happened across a cheap VHS of HAMMERED:The Best of Sledge" and found it as hilarious as when first aired in the mid-1980s. Ultra-right-wing types will not like it no doubt but for those who can appreciate the irony, and satire(wonder what Eastwood thought of it?) this is a true gem of a series. For some odd reason, I did not see the show each week, strange, as this sort of off-center parody appeals to me a great deal. In the above collection, it's difficult to pick a favorite of those four episodes, although the take-off on Fatal Attraction is spot-on. The one ripping the God-Father is also ecellent, but I can see why Sledge wouldn't have a chance of getting on the air today, as Politically-incorrect as it was, which is too bad all around. Anybody who enjoys Petter Sellars's Inspector Clouseau films will get a blast(pun intended) out of Sledge Hammer! Go buy the DVD set today! I would be remiss by not mentioning beautiful Ann-Marie Martin as Hammer's partner, and sane sidekick/foil to his sexist attitudes(although yet another parody in themselves which many seem to have missed originally).
okedjtj What if Inspector Clouseau or Maxwell Smart had Dirty Harry's baby? You would have SLEDGE HAMMER!Hammer had the trigger happy/excessively violent demeanor of Dirty Harry, but with the cluelessness of the other two & the results were hilarious. One running gag was that Hammer would frequently talk to his gun. He would tell his female partner that what he liked best about her was "you think like a man". In one episode, his gun was stolen & he went into an extreme emotional spiral. And of course, there was his trademark catchphrase - "Trust me, I know what I'm doing" - which of course, was usually followed by him doing something really stupid, like blowing up an entire city. This show suffered from poor ratings as a result of poor scheduling. The brainiacs at ABC decided to schedule the show smackdab in the middle of the hugely hyped Dallas/Miami Vice showdown of 1986 (when Vice was moved to 9 PM to compete head-to-head with the Ewings), then wondered why the ratings were so bad. (NOTE: the Dallas/Miami scheduling dilemma was loosely referred to in the episode "All Shook Up", providing one of the show's more memorable lines.) Then the show was moved to the Saturday night graveyard, then to hiatus. The final 2 episodes were aired on Tuesday after Who's The Boss - FINALLY a cushy timeslot - & the show not only cracked the top-20, but soundly beat Matlock each week. In the final episode of Season 1, figuring the show had NO HOPE of returning, Hammer nukes himself & the entire city - but then the show got RENEWED... and scheduled against ratings juggernaut supreme COSBY SHOW - not just another no-win slot, the DEATH SLOT!Looking forward to a second season & wondering how the 'cliffhanger' would play out, I anxiously awaited the Season 2 opener, only to be hugely disappointed when the writers' only way out of the cliffhanger was to have Gary Owens open the premiere with the disclaimer "The following season of 'Sledge Hammer!' takes place FIVE YEARS before that explosion", thus jumping the shark. Season 2 was also extremely toned down from the first season due to Hammer having been rated as the most violent show on TV & ABC also tampering with it (as if it the WRITING was to blame for the poor ratings & not the killer timeslots).I jumped at the chance to purchase BOTH seasons when they became available on DVD. This has to be the greatest TV show never seen!
OlYankee Probably the best TV satire of everything 1980s, which is astounding, since it premiered near the middle of the decade. I knew people back then who were Sledge, for real! Poor Anne-Marie Martin as Dori Doreau: imagine thinking that computers could help you do your work, when all you need is Gun.David Rasche was perfect as the maniacally serious Sledge. Harrison Page actually allowed one to identify with a boss who had a report who was, well, impossible. You knew any of Trunk's victories would be short-lived.The movie/contemporary situation send-ups were all wonderful and many still ring true re current events.Best line was at the end of Season One: Trunk: Hammer!
Julie Hoverson I just received my "season two - the final season" set, and am almost afraid to crack the box, since there are at least five episodes I never got a chance to see.... I don't know if I will survive!!!This show was one of my - nope, forget that, was my ONE AND ONLY ALL TIME FAVORITE sitcom EVER, and (as usual with my favorites), it didn't last. I guess I like stuff that is just too smart for most people.Sledge Hammer was a smart show. It got a lot smarter after they flushed the laugh tracks (which were left out for the DVDs - THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!), but the humor was always there. The very first episode involved a serial killer taking out Elvis impersonators, and Sledge had to go undercover at the Famous School of Elvis. When asked "do you even know how to do Elvis?" He replies "Of course I can do Elvis - you just move your lips...and shake your hips...and look bloated." Later he impresses the teacher only after he karate kicks him across the room... Just like Elvis woulda done.My favorite line of all, though, is in the episode Wild About Hammer (a Fatal Attraction type homage), where Doreau (Sledge's much savvier female partner) is looking at a file on a cop who's been murdered and says "He refused to be partnered with a woman. Like you, Sledge, he was a misogynist." And Sledge replies "HEY! Just 'cause I gave a guy a backrub once doesn't make me a massagenist." (READ IT OUT LOUD, IT WILL MAKE SENSE)I am soooo glad they finally came out with the second season, since it includes some of my favorite episodes, like the one where Sledge gets put on suspension and decides to become a private eye, and starts hallucinating conversations with Bogart, or the one where they investigate a string of dead used-car salesmen and Sledge does a full-on Crocodile Dundee impersonation. Boo-yah!
